An artist and writer as well as documentary filmmaker, Johan Grimonprez takes a multidisciplinary approach to his subjects, combining archival footage, interviews, and cultural artifacts to dismantle how history is shaped and presented to us. As French writer Voltaire writes: “History is the lie commonly agreed upon”
Centered around the assassination of Congo leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961, Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat is a kaleidoscope of politicians, spies, colonialism, revolution, and music––specifically jazz music of the 1950s and 1960s. Weaving together strands from Africa, Europe, and the United States, Grimonprez makes a compelling case that Lumumba’s death reverberates through society to this day.
Grimonprez uses jazz as a thread to tie together stories as disparate as Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev pounding his shoe at the United Nations, the CIA sponsoring “jazz ambassador” tours of Africa, and Belgian leaders holding onto Congolese resources while ceding control of the country.

At 93, William Shatner has seen more change in the industry than pretty much anyone else alive. As such, he has been forced to adapt alongside it. But in his latest attempt to do so, he has triggered outcry from those defending real artists. Yes, it has to do with a new album; no, it has nothing to do with Shatner’s vocal talents. For the cover art for his children’s album Where Will the Animals Sleep? Songs for Kids & Other Living Things, Shatner evidently used artificial intelligence to generate the (rather creepy) image, something that has drawn ire from some fans, who say he should have hired an actual human artist to do the work.
After being hit with a barrage of comments from his social media followers, William Shatner was forced to defend the use of artificial intelligence for the cover art (with points pretty much all over...

Sundance Review: Soundtrack to a Coup d’État is a Vibrant, Complex, and Jazz-Infused Political Essay
It was Mark Twain who said, “History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes,” which is one way of approaching Belgian filmmaker and multimedia artist Johan Grimonprez’s sprawling, jazz-infused Soundtrack to a Coup d’État. The political essay revisits 1960, a turbulent year in global affairs: Patrice Lumumba rises to power in Congo just as the United States, through the CIA-backed Voice of America radio network, aims to soften America’s image aboard, sending jazz musicians Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, Abbey Lincoln, and Max Roach to tour the world. The film positions the jazz musicians as a kind of political cabinet while Gillespie envisions his own run for the White House on TV talk shows back home. It proceeds with a rather kinetic, defiant tone in which the jazz, breaking news, citations, and quotes interrupt the historical footage a more standard documentary may have primarily focused on.

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

"A mixtape is a message from the maker to the listener." That is indeed an accurate description. Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a nostalgic dramedy film titled Mixtape, the latest from filmmaker Valerie Weiss. As the world approaches Y2K, a quirky 12-year-old sets out on a journey to find songs on a mixtape made by her late parents. When a young girl accidentally destroys the mixtape that belonged to her mother, she sets out to track down each of the obscure songs on the cassette. The film stars Gemma Brooke Allen as Beverly, with Audrey Hsieh, Olga Petsa, Jackson Rathbone, plus Nick Thune and Julie Bowen. As cute as this looks, it's pretty much like hitting gold in the nostalgia mine - combining late 90s nostalgia with cassette-tape nostalgia all in one! There's also toppings of Napster nostalgia and vinyl nostalgia, too. It does look like ...

Jenna Dewan is headed back to the Arrowverse.
The actress, who appeared on Supergirl Season 1 as Lucy Lane, has been tapped to recur on Superman & Lois Season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the exciting news.
This will also mark the first time Lois and Lucy will be sharing the screen, so it will be fun to see what the two Lane sisters will get up to.
The Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover had stratospheric effects on the Arrowverse, so who knows what the relationship between Lucy and Lois will be like.
Dewan was a part of the Supergirl cast when it was still on CBS, so it's been a long time since fans have seen the character.
Dewan followed Supergirl up with roles on The Resident, Soundtrack, and The Rookie.
While there is usually strong connective tissue between the shows set in the Arrowverse, Superman & Lois has so far only had one character crossover.

Music supervisor Jen Ross has worked on a number of music-themed series in her career, including “Smash,” “Empire” and “Soundtrack,” but few compare to the amount of work necessary for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” The show is driven by Zoey’s ability to hear people’s “heart songs,” of which we hear at least four and as many as nine in a given episode. Ross is tasked with securing music rights to all of them under a tight network TV schedule, and it’s far from easy. “‘Zoey’s’ is a very specific beast unto itself,” says Ross in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It’s really a constant interesting game of how do you get everything done in the time and not compromise any of the creative storyline and any of the narrative.” Watch the full webchat above.

Kyle Chandler is joining the cast of Showtime’s anthology series “Super Pumped,” the television adaptation of Mike Isaac’s book, “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.”
The “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline” actor will star as Bill Gurley, described as “the plainspoken, brilliant Texan venture capitalist who bets his sterling reputation on Uber’s success – and then has to live with the consequences.”
The news comes days after Showtime announced that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would star as Uber CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick, who was ousted from the Silicon Valley unicorn in a boardroom coup. “Billions” creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien, as well as “Soundtrack’s” Beth Schacter, will serve as executive producers, writers and showrunners on the series. Paul Schiff and Allyce Ozarski will also executive produce, alongside writer Stephen Schiff. Isaac is a co-executive producer on the project, produced by Showtime.

Showtime has given a series order to the anthology series “Super Pumped,” with Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to star in the first season as Uber CEO Travis Kalanick.
Based on Mike Isaac’s book “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” the series will “depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley,” according to Showtime’s description. “Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.”
The project was initially put into development as a limited series, but has since been re-conceived as an anthology. Future seasons will each center on a different story that “rocked the business world to its core and changed culture.”

Twitch unveiled a new feature on Wednesday to give streamers easy access to rights-cleared music, after months of being criticized for not licensing music. Named “Soundtrack,” the feature is essentially an in-house streaming platform: It arrives with a sizable library from artists like Porter Robinson, Above and Beyond and Mxmtoon, as well as label and distribution partners like Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak, Anjunabeats and Future Classic. Like on Spotify, there will be genre stations and playlists curated by Twitch’s music staff.

Twitch has launched in beta a new tool that will enable creators to soundtrack their streams with rights-cleared music -- a tool it also says will benefit artists as a key discovery mechanism.
The tool, dubbed Soundtrack, will roll out to all Twitch creators in coming weeks, giving users the ability to create Playlists of curated tracks -- or to select genre-specific Stations -- that will play throughout their broadcasts. All songs have been cleared by Twitch for global use, and are being offered to help creators avoid the punishments they can incur for illegally streaming with copyrighted songs in the form of either strikes against their channels or the muting of clips within their archives.
The Verge notes that while Soundtrack songs have been cleared for live use, they aren't eligible to appear in on-demand videos -- and thus, the Soundtrack tool is designed to integrate with existing streaming...
