We’re still a couple of weeks out from The Boys returning with its second season, but based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it certainly looks as if we’re in for another wild ride. One that may even top the first run of the show, which was one of the best things that we’d seen on television in a long time.
Of course, trying to predict how something as crazy as The Boys is going to end up is a fool’s errand, but let’s not forget that it won’t be the only new thing arriving on Amazon Prime in September. Far from it, in fact.
Earlier today, the streaming service announced their entire line-up of new titles for next month and it’s a meaty list, comprising both films and television shows. And though The Boys may be the highlight for many...

An election season is fast-approaching in the U.S. So for its new releases in September 2020, Amazon Prime is bringing back one of its most political shows.
The Boys season 2 premieres its first three episodes on September 4. Though the show on its face is a superhero story, viewers of season 1 will know it’s really about America’s troubling embrace of entertainment with fascism. Sounds fun and not at all terrifying right before a presidential election!
That’s not the only bleak Amazon original on the schedule for September. British TV adaptation Utopia arrives on September 25. This Gillian Flynn-produced series follows fans of a comic book who believe it predicts…world-ending pandemics. Darn it. Amazon’s only original film this month is a…documentary about voter suppression from Liz Garbus called All In: The Fight for Democracy. Yikes.

Sometimes, the Wrong Man is the Wrong WoMan.
When Wrong Man Season 2 premieres this Sunday, series creator Joe Berlinger steps away from the title to explore how women, too, can find themselves unable to extricate themselves from a justice system that does them wrong.
The Wrong Man Season 1 produced actual results, so those inmates involved would be hard-pressed not to get their hopes up as a result of being a part of Berlinger's series.
Season 1 death row inmate Curtis Flowers saw his conviction overturned in the case of a quadruple murder after being prosecuted for it six times by the same prosecutor.
If not for the team on Wrong Man, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas acknowledged, Flowers could still be on death row today.
Christopher Tapp served 21 years behind bars for the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl after he was coerced into confessing.

Wrong Man documentary series takes some unexpected turns as it enters season 2.

Joe Berlinger's Starz series Wrong Man continues its tradition of documentary justice. Season 1 led to two overturned murder convictions: for Curtis Flowers, who was tried six times by nearly all-white juries, and Christopher Tapp, exonerated from rape and murder charges after serving 20 years of a 30-year sentence. It also helped Evaristo Salas win a new trial where he will be represented by a pro bono lawyer. Wrong Man season 2 focuses on wronged women.
The long-form documentary journalism series messes with the formula set in the first season in a few ways. The obvious one is that this season focuses on wrongfully accused women. Beginning with "The Case Against Grandma," Vonda Smith, who was convicted of beating 21-year-old Jessie Morrison, the mother of her grandchild, beyond recognition. The less obvious change is the show pulls...

Steven Soderbergh is to exec produce a true-crime doc series about the military justice system for Starz.
The Lionsgate-backed broadcaster has ordered Leavenworth from the Magic Mike and Ocean’s Eleven director as well as Paul Pawlowski (Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive) and David Check (The Franchise).
The series, which was unveiled by Starz Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Hirsch at the TCA summer press tour, will premiere on the channel on October 20 2019.
Leavenworth tells the story of Clint Lorance, who is serving a 19-year sentence for murder at The United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth. While deployed in Afghanistan in July 2012, the former lieutenant ordered fire on three local men riding a motorcycle, killing two of them and outraging his platoon. In a first-hand account of a soldier navigating the Us Army’s legal system, Lorance seeks to overturn his conviction, provoking emotional debate between supporters and detractors that rises to the national stage.

Starz Renews ‘Wrong Man’ For Second Season As Supreme Court Strikes Conviction Of Season One Subject
Starz has picked up original series Wrong Man for a second season, the announcement coming the same week the Supreme Court struck down the conviction of death row inmate Curtis Flowers, whose case was examined in the series’ first season.
The six-episode second season from filmmaker Joe Berlinger re-investigates three cases of inmates who have been incarcerated for decades but claim they were wrongfully convicted of the brutal crimes.
“With Wrong Man, Joe and his team have created a format unique to the true crime genre that is both compelling for viewers and has had real life implications for the wrongfully accused individuals involved in these cases,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, Starz COO. “With a second season, we look forward to deploying our team of experts on three new cases, to continue to explore whether justice was in fact served.

Curtis Flowers has been on death row for 22 years. Earlier today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Flowers, striking down a death sentence for a man who’s been prosecuted six times for the same crime, and by a prosecutor with a history of racial bias.
The case for Flowers, who has maintained his innocence, is full of circumstantial evidence, questionable police work, and, as the Supreme Court suggested in their 7-2 decision, racial discrimination.
Flowers’ case was featured in two episodes of “Wrong Man,” a crime docuseries on Starz that investigates the criminal convictions of individuals who have maintained their innocence. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile Director Joe Berlinger explains why he cut away from the violence of Ted Bundy.
Ted Bundy confessed to killing more than 30 people in the 1970s. Told through the eyes of his longtime girlfriend Liz Kendall, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, consigns this to subtext. But not because no one wanted to see Zac Efron, who stars as Bundy, committing such heinous acts. People did, and the film has been getting some flak about it.
Director Joe Berlinger doesn't focus his camera softly. His film Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, about the West Memphis Three, was criticized for its graphic documentation. Berlinger, who immersed himself in Bundy for his Netflix documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, speaks with Den of Geek about how much violence is too much, and how much isn't enough.

In 2003, Steve James’ first docuseries debuted on PBS. “The New Americans” was a seven-hour “verité style” film following a diverse group of immigrants and refugees who left their homes to move to America. The expansive, six-and-a-half-year project covered the subjects in their native countries as well as in the states, and all 411 minutes aired over three nights as one big event.
“It didn’t play theatrically because it was seven hours long,” James said. “It played at Idfa, SXSW, and one other film festival, and then it was on public television, and then it was gone.”
As James distinctly remembers, this was a time before streaming and DVRs, before Netflix and HBO sparked national news with buzzy docuseries, and before an era of peak TV led to massive libraries of endlessly accessible content.
“I remember thinking, ‘Jeez. All that work, it’s on television, and then it’s done,'” James said.

Gone are the days when HBO, PBS and Showtime ruled the documentary marketplace. Netflix and Amazon — as well as the recent emergence of digital distributors including Apple, Facebook, Hulu and YouTube Red — have changed the face of the docu genre: There is a newfound excitement around unscripted projects. But with the rapid nonfiction platform expansion has come a strong demand for content — and not just any old content. Content that taps into the cultural zeitgeist. Content that tackles the latest headlines. Content that audiences want to better understand. Or at least try and understand.
Major players in the docs field such as Netflix, as well as unlikely networks like E!, are clamoring for topical documentaries about issues including the Trump presidency and movements like Black Lives Matter, #MeToo and Never Again.
