The main factory in Cole Creek is to close with the possible loss of hundreds of jobs. The town could completely disappear economically. Trade unionists, led by the moderate Mario Cormier, organize a peaceful if somewhat pessimistic demonstration. But a few demonstrators, encouraged by Alexis Godin, see things differently.

Disorganised and under pressure, the hostage-takers have to deal with the police who have now surrounded the factory. Whilst the negotiator Chantale Trempe tries to establish contact, Mario Cormier attempts to stabilize the situation from the inside. The journalist Julien Spick discovers a past event linking Cormier and Godin.

As Godin sets the police an ultimatum, Chantale Trempe wonders about Mario's somewhat strange behaviour. Julien Spick, who is covering the social and economic impacts of the crisis for the region, meets Gisèle, Mario's wife. She doesn't appear particularly inclined to help him.

Night falls, the group is weary and paranoia is starting to take over. A serious act committed by one of Godin's followers makes the situation even more tense. For Godin the event brings to mind a worrying memory involving Mario Cormier.

The tension increases another notch when Mario's plan fails, causing serious collateral damage. However, he does succeed in taking control of Godin's gang. Outside, Chantal Trempe finds Mario's behaviour more and more suspect and seriously begins to doubt his honesty.

As Mario prepares to commit the irreparable the police decide to storm the factory. Julien Spick and Chantale Trempe discover the reasons behind Mario's scheming and his real motivations.
