South and West Asian films make up the entirety of this years Brooklyn Film Festival’s (Bff) Asian film line-up. As with the rest of their programme, the festival has a good mix of movies. Of the features spanning from Turkey to Syria to Nepal, some are East Coast premieres; some US; some even world. While the standard Asia-based narratives persist, the festival also leans into modern-day trends to feature more diaspora narratives. Notably, of these entries, almost half of them (3 out of 7) highlight Muslim or Islam-influenced narratives.
Earlier this week, the Brooklyn Film Festival announced the film lineup for its 24th edition, “The Clearing.” The 2021 edition will feature 36 World Premieres, 28 USA bows, 34 east coast debuts, and 25 first-time screenings in NY. In total, Bff will show in competition 147 features and shorts from 35 countries. The full lineup includes 13 narrative features and 9 documentary features highlighted in this release. The festival will also present 39 narrative shorts,...

Exclusive: Spotify and Chernin Entertainment have appointed ex-caa agent Vanessa Silverton-Peel to lead its hunt for podcasts to adapt for TV and film.
Last year, the two companies struck a multi-year deal that would see Chernin Entertainment adapt Spotify’s audio IP for the screen. At the time, the pair said that they were looking to hire an executive to sit inside the audio giant to identify opportunities. Deadline understands that Silverton-Peel is that executive.
She has joined Spotify as Head of Chernin Partnership and will search for series and episodes to adapt. This comes after she left CAA, where she was an agent in the television department, last year. During her seven year tenure at the agency, she represented podcasts companies such as Spotify’s Gimlet Media, Pineapple Street Studios and Wnyc Studios to adapt their IP in scripted and non-scripted television, as well as documentary filmmakers and directors,...

The number of podcasts being adapted for television is set to explode over the course of the next few years, with audio IP rivaling books as Hollywood’s go-to source for inspiration.

The never-ending search for original intellectual properties that can make the next franchises for film and television has led Chernin Entertainment chairman Peter Chernin and president Jenno Topping to make a deal with Spotify’s chief content exec Dawn Ostroff. They’ve formed a multi-year partnership to mine Spotify’s library and new podcast content for projects.
While Spotify streams broadcasts third party branded podcast whose rights are spoken for, the service controls more than 250 original series and thousands of hours of content and all of that will be available to the new partnership. Chernin told Deadline that they are already developing two properties – The Clearing, the true story of a woman who comes to believe her father is a series killer, and Blackout, an apocalyptic series that stars Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar winner Rami Malek — and it became clear that a platform that continues to grow in popularity is an...
