I almost bailed on this, due to impressions from the first episode. Some of that has been alluded to by at least one other reviewer. One set of characters (no spoilers here) are a squad of police detectives who are somewhat inept, but in the first episode, that is a bit overdone, coming off a bit too much like "slapstick comedy, gone very, very wrong". It just seemed a bit too childish. But, based upon the IMDB reviews, and score, I went ahead and watched the next episode, which led to me quickly being addicted (and the Episode 1 silliness did not recur). There are just a continuous set of "hooks" (revelations) that keep you wondering what is going to happen next, and those are all part of a larger story that is woven together, revelation by revelation.
Although there are a handful of core characters, this is one of those stories where you have to pay close attention, as the underlying story is a much larger canvas than is obvious up front, and as more details are revealed, and events from different timeframes are woven into the story, there are a lot of "things" to keep track of (both people and events). Certainly, it works better, IMHO, to be able to watch the series in a shorter timeframe (e.g. Binge-watching it in chunks), just because it has so much going on.
It is the fact that most of the ongoing revelations are not so much "adding pieces to the puzzle", as they are "turning the puzzle on its head", that makes it so interesting. Those regular "twists" are also not unrealistic, i.e. (IMHO) they aren't just ridiculous, unlikely plot devices. There are often flashbacks that show events as they happen, to further weave those ever-growing plot elements into the larger story. Again, some of those flashbacks involve the same characters, at different ages, so you need to pay attention in order to tie everything together. (Much as with another really great series, "Dark", you can't be sitting on the couch, texting on your phone, while you attempt to watch this, or you will quickly find yourself lost.)
Anyway, I'm obviously providing no real details about the story, to avoid any spoilers, but suffice it to say that I believe that anyone how watches the first few episodes, will either find themselves as hooked as I was, OR, they will simply decide that it's not a story that interests them at all. Just don't bail out instantly, after the first episode. Its initial tone is simply not representative of the larger story being told. It's a long journey (some of the episodes are long), but well worth the trip.

I genuinely don't think I have seen a better show. Finished watching it last night and I am still reeling from the depth of the show. The detail they went into, how much they inter weaved the plot was nothing short of masterful.
The more I think about the show the more I realised just how well they did everything. For example most of the characters are introduced negatively, there is always something about them to give you reason to either hate or look down on them slightly. Such as the main character starting out by always being sick and feeling pathetic but with every one of them they make them feel human. They grow on you to change into what feels like people you can understand and its done so insanely well.
Its probably the only show where before I was probably half way through I was already thinking of re-watching it to figure out all the details and clues they left for us along the way.

It's ridiculous to read reviews of people who only watched 10 minutes of the pilot episode. It's like judging a book after just reading the first page. I thought this was Chinese TV to start with, turns out its south Korean. VERY NICE. Important to get all the details or else you will lose track of whats really happening.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Complex storyline, interesting character development, good mixture of dark and light-hearted moments. It definitely gets better with each episode. Everyone who likes unusual and mysterious characters, amazing plot twists and fantasy, crime or mystery shows should give this show a try.

I started watching this series on Netflix when I had a bout of the flu and was bed bound and running out of things to watch. Someone from a horror group I belong to recommended it. I first thought it was Japanese but realized the words I was reading in the subtitles were not matching the limited Japanese I knew. After a bit I realized It was a Korean show. If you don't mind subtitles I highly recommend this show and I really hope it continues. It has it all but, mostly is a crime drama, with action, fantasy, and romance, so really right up there on my genre list. I am sad that there are only a couple episodes left for me to watch and I may not get any more of this show. The acting is great aside from some of the kinda cheesy moments. The writing is superb. I love the story and I want more. I sure hope we get a season 2. I would definitely watch it!!!!

The ending absolutely ruined the whole drama for me, it was 17 episodes of building up to reveal and expose, amazing action intensity and all, then episode 18 an utter disappointment...

So I almost gave up on this show half-way through episode one. It just felt a bit cheesy and the humor fell flat for me. I didn't particularly care or was interested in the main characters, and I almost decided not to watch this. Then I came on IMDB and saw another reviewer say to push past the first episode - that its pacing and cheesy humor would improve by just the second episode. So I decided to do just that - thank you other reviewer, because this ended up being a powerful, amazing story that I watched until the early morning hours for three days straight. The plot was amazing and took twists and turns I never saw coming. So please, if you are thinking of dropping this show because of the first episode, do push through to episode 2. It really is worth the time!

I really wanted to like this series. After reading all the reviews, I went in with home. It had all the elements I love, fantasy, super power abilities, mystery, crime solving and comedy. However, this series sadly did not meet my expectations.
As another reviewer said, there are a lot of plot holes, scattered storylines, over exaggerated scenarios and odd character decisions that ruined the overall appeal of the series. I love a good solid story but this entire show felt like a string of scenes not tied together and many forced scenes just to create a comedic moment. Every ep has scenes that could be completely cut out as it's mainly just filler.
The story of the main female protagonist is what kept me watching as the story is very intriguing but everything else felt disconnected and unexplained,
Overall, great premise with potential that needed to be tightened up.

Love the complexity of the story and the acting is top notch. It honestly gets better as the story develops. I am on episode 8 and that is all my wife and I have been talking about. Awseome!
Has something of everything, absurdly full of love more than drama, it's a good performance in a subreal story, obviously not for an Oscar, but to keep us in suspense. Enjoy, just if you are a romantic!

Absolutely well made!
It includes comedy, drama, mystery, yellow, paranormal, with a complicated and never banal plot, I laughed, I cried, it became one of my favorite series.

This is an 18 episode story arc.
The use of flashbacks fills in the pieces of this very complex storyline. Sometimes the director / writer shows a different character's perspective in the same episode or goes back several episodes. I have never seen anything this comprehensive. He even bridges episode 1 and 17 perfectly. Even if you end up disliking the story, you WILL understand why character X did Y.
I was disappointed in the finale as well. The series peaked in the second to last episode which was absolutely magnificent. But that served to highlight the flaws in the finale. The finale was not terrible but did not live up to the standards of the previous episodes. It's as if the writer tried too hard to make that the peak and should have just let that episode ebb even more.
It has the following elements ...
1. Very unique writing and editing.
2. More than a few great characters (give the police squad a chance).
3. Really despicable bad guys that you want to see pay for their crimes. On a related note, the violence is not graphic but very disturbing.
4. An interesting mythology parceled out with great timing.
5. A very beautiful Korean doctor to help neutralize the distaste of reading subtitles (actually more than a few beautiful Korean women).

I have only watched the first two episodes, but already now this seems like the most interesting show since Twin Peaks - The return. A mezmerising mixture of slapstick comedy, horror, fantasy, love story and thriller noir.
This is what TV is supposed to be.

This drama is very good but way too long and with way too many unnecessary turns. At times I was watching and thinking when is this going to end?!? The drama though , is very well executed and it has zero clichés, not your typical k drama at all. If it was shorter and if it was wrapped up quicker and in a more direct way it would have been perfect!
Although very sad and with a bittersweet ending, I think is worth the watch.

Black makes use of many genres. Fantasy, with the popular for 2017 grim repear theme, crime, another 2017 popular theme for the k drama, romance, dark, mystery and comedy. The story itself is interesting and the atmosphere is good enough to create that dark twisted feeling. However, there were some things that just didn't work for me. First, the humour was so so and kind of odd in this story. Secondly, the ending. Actually, this one ruined the whole series for me. It was kind of cheesy and not well made at all. So, 6 out of 10.

This show was like BOOM MIND BLOWN. wow it was so good. And it ended on a good not (which is why i like to watch k-dramas because they ALWAYS end nicely) but i SO recommened this show! Don't let the language stop you! Don't be a little poop and say that you won't watch it because you don't understand what they're saying! I actually read faster now since I've watched this. lol. I had to train myself to read faster to keep up with what they were saying. But I really really really! recommened this show! Please watch! YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN! :))
