AMC Networks has bought out its partner for the cable channel BBC America, the company announced on Friday.
The entertainment giant spent $49 million in cash to acquire full control of the channel from BBC Studios, which held a 50.1 percent stake in the network.
The channel was originally launched in 1998 by the commercial arm of the BBC, then known as BBC Worldwide, which allowed the British public service broadcaster to present its comedies and dramas to a stateside audience while allowing it to tap into various advertising opportunities.
BBC America was originally distributed by Discovery Communications, but the partnership ended in 2014 when AMC Networks acquired a minority stake in the channel. It continued to operate under a licensing agreement with BBC Studios, during which it replaced a considerable amount of British programming with re-runs of “Star Trek,” “Law & Order,...

AMC Networks has rolled up BBC America, paying $42 million in cash for the cable network.
The news was disclosed in the company’s third-quarter earnings release. The transaction, which gives AMC Networks the 50.1% of the network that it did not previously have, closed November 1. AMC Networks and the BBC entered into the venture in 2014.
Signature BBC America originals like Killing Eve and Orphan Black became major components of the overall AMC Networks programming portfolio in the 2010s. More recently, streaming has become the focus for most traditional media companies, leaving linear cable networks to wither, though they still throw off significant cash.
Like its peers in the cable programming sector, AMC Networks will often roadblock programming across multiple networks, as is the case with BBC America.
The earnings release noted a bookkeeping aspect of the rollup. “Assuming the transaction had closed on September 30, 2024,” the end of the third quarter, it said,...

BBC America now fully and officially belongs to AMC Networks. The company revealed that it acquired the remaining 50.1% of the channel from BBC Studios in a deal that took place last Friday.
The remaining half of the company was paid for in $42 million cash, which was distributed from the savings balance sheet. “We now own 100% of the iconic channel with full operational control, and look forward to what the future holds,” Patrick O’Connell, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of AMC Networks, said during the company’s third quarter earnings call for 2024.
O’Connell assured analysts that moving forward AMC will continue to have a “close commercial relationship with BBC Studios” when it comes to the channel, ensuring that the brand and its programming remain at the same caliber. The company will continue to fully consolidate BBC America, as it did prior to this transaction.

AMC Networks has acquired full control of BBC America, its joint venture with BBC Studios.
The U.S. media company has owned a 49.9% stake in the channel since 2014, which it purchased for $200 million in a deal with BBC Worldwide. With this new transaction, which closed Nov. 1, AMC Networks gains the remaining 50.1% of BBC America in exchange for $42 million in cash.
Per AMC Networks’ Q3 earnings results, which were released Friday, AMC Networks “now owns 100% of the BBC America business, with full operational control, and will continue to fully consolidate BBC America.”
Along with “Mad Men,” “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad,” some of the shows AMC Networks is best known for are past BBC America hits and critical darlings, including “Killing Eve,” “Orphan Black” and “Doctor Who” (which now airs on Disney+).
AMC Networks says “future contractual programming commitments to BBC Studios would have been significantly reduced,” had the deal been closed by Sept.

After her recent Tony-winning turn in the play “Prima Facie” and finally bringing Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” into theaters after a late-act distributor switcheroo last year, British star Jodie Comer is keeping very busy indeed. The Emmy-winning “Killing Eve” star will next appear in a pair of hot new films from lauded directors, but before that, she was on hand at this year’s Scad Savannah Film Festival to accept the fest’s Etoile Award.
As part of the honor, Comer spent an hour last Sunday morning talking through her career (so far) in front of a rapt and excited crowd at the Scad Museum of Art. The chat was moderated by yours truly, and the generous Comer happily and astutely unpacked her work, how she got here, and what’s next. And, yes, that includes teasing two big film projects she has on the horizon.

Since 2001, Angelina Jolie has been seen as the perfect embodiment of Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft. However, the actress ended up giving up the role in 2003 to pursue other roles that she believed suited her better. The actress was replaced by Alicia Vikander years after her final run. But recently, there have been rumors that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner could take over the video game role.

Earlier this year, we learned that Phoebe Waller-Bridge's planned Tomb Raider TV series had received the green light at Amazon Prime Video.
Handed a series order, the live-action reboot was described as an "epic" and "globe-trotting" series by Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke. She later added, "Phoebe has a lifelong love affair with Lara Croft and as soon and very soon we’ll start the worldwide search for who will play this iconic role and I just can’t wait."
We haven't heard much about the project since, but Deadline (via GameFragger.com) brings word today that the studio has assembled a wishlist of young actors to play the new Lara Croft.
Among them are Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones) and Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), with both set to test for the iconic role in the coming weeks. Emma Corrin (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil...

Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, with fan-favorite characters in “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover.” The singer and actress soon started dabbling in feature films, where she earned the plum role of Mj, Tom Holland‘s love interest, in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” movies. Zendaya’s biggest claim to fame was in 2020, when she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the Best Drama Actress category for playing a teen drug addict on “Euphoria.” Her career continues to blossom thanks to recent releases like “Challengers” (directed by Luca Guadagnino) and “Dune” (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

Visit Films has acquired international sales rights excluding Canada for “Can I Get a Witness?,” a poetic and satirical sci-fi fable written and directed by Canadian auteur Ann Marie Fleming.
The film had its world premiere at Toronto and has been selected to play in competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Mongrel Media will be releasing the film Canada.
The film is set in the not-too-distant future where we’ve solved all the world’s problems: mitigated climate change, eradicated poverty, and achieved true trans-species equality. There’s just one catch… humans have to end life at 50 and teenage artists have to document it, and it’s Kiah’s first day on the job.
“Can I Get a Witness?” stars Keira Jang, in her feature debut, alongside Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Joel Oulette (“Trickster”). The film is produced by Ann Marie Fleming, Raymond Massey, Ruth Vincent and executive produced by Haydn Wazelle,...

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, adapting bigger and bolder storylines to live-action, Sony too is moving ahead with its Spider-Man Universe. Having access to some 900 or so characters related to the fan-favorite web-slinger, the studio is now moving to the small screen to bring yet another story to live-action.
Spider-Man Noir | Credit: Marvel Comics
Starring Nicolas Cage, the studio has been developing the series Spider-Noir for quite some time now, and the first looks of the series were recently leaked. Reprising his role from the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, this time in live-action, fans are excited and waiting eagerly for the series.
Despite Sony’s track record of Marvel flicks (other than the Spider-Verse movies) being, bluntly stating, terrible, the prospect of seeing Cage as the live version of his character does seem alluring. So, without further ado, here is all we know about the latest and upcoming series.

At this point, we all know that for better or for worse, Lady Gaga loves going Method for her roles. She claimed that for her role as Ally in "A Star is Born" — the role that won her an Oscar for best original song thanks to the showstopper "Shallow" — she lived in the role for years. More recently, she changed her singing voice and walked the set of "Joker: Folie á Deux" as Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. In 2022, for the biopic "House of Gucci," Lady Gaga took "the Method," where you fully embody your character even when the cameras are off super seriously, and even spoke in an Italian accent for her role as Patrizia Reggiani. Apparently, she also refused to speak to one of her co-stars as a result of her approach to Patrizia.

Nicolas Cage was spotted on the set of Spider-Noir earlier this month but wasn’t in his Spidey costume at the time. Thankfully, our first look at the live-action Spider-Man Noir costume has arrived, thanks to a handful of set photos. There’s also a video that showcases a stunt sequence in which Spider-Noir is perched atop a vehicle while shooting webs. You’ll have to view that through the link. Given the nature of the scene, it’s not Cage in the costume but rather a stunt double.

Although we likely won't see it for a while, HBO's new Harry Potter TV show is one of the biggest series on the horizon. How could it not be? The Harry Potter books and movies remain incredibly popular and influential, and the controversies surrounding author and executive producer J.K. Rowling add some spice to the proceedings.
HBO is moving ahead with the show; Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner while Mark Mylod will direct several episodes. Meanwhile, casting directors are on the hunt for new actors to play Harry, Ron and Hermione, the iconic characters at the center of the story. Speaking at the television industry trade show Mipcom, Warner Bros. Discovery executive Channing Dungey said that “writing staff was in place and they’re doing what they need to do, and casting calls have opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along,” per Variety.

Right now, Netflix is nearing the end of filming on the fourth season of its monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher. By any standard, this is an important juncture for the series, both onscreen and off. In terms of the story, season 4 marks a turning point as the show heads into its endgame, which will conclude with a fifth and final season set to film in 2025. Actor Liam Hemsworth is now taking up the mantle of Geralt of Rivia after Henry Cavill left the series following its third season.

The Garvey sisters are back – and dealing with another body – two years after viewers last saw them on screen.
In the first trailer for Season 2, which is set two years after the events of Season 1, Eva (Sharon Horgan), Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) are apparently trying to move on with their lives, with troubled Grace getting a second chance at love.
But the past – including Grace’s dead husband Jp (Claes Bang) – seems determined to haunt them while the present throws up another corpse.
“Two years after the ‘accidental death’ of Grace’s abusive husband, the close-knit Garvey sisters may have moved on but when past truths resurface, the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight, suspicions are at an all-time high, lies are told, secrets revealed and the sisters are forced to work out who they can trust,” reads the logline.

Grace has moved on… and is even getting married to a new bloke named Ian, played by Owen McDonnell. Apparate! A return to the Wizarding World (and to our childhood) is set for 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO are currently putting their wits behind bringing Harry Potter to television—and they strongly iterate the fact that it will explore J.K Rowling’s seven-book saga in way more detail. Well, it’s about time something happened with this IP.
A significant name in the cultural zeitgeist, Francesca Gardiner of Succession fame will run the series and will take the role of lead writer. Seems like responsible enough hands. She will find familiar company in Mark Mylod, who is set to direct multiple episodes and also serve as executive producer.

There was a significant gap (over two years) between the first and second seasons of Prime Video's Invincible animated series, but we had been assured that the wait for season 3 wouldn't be as long, and that's now been confirmed thanks to a leaked teaser.
Invincible will return to our screens on February 6, 2025 - and there will be no pesky mid-season break!
We have no idea how long this promo will stay up (and wouldn't be surprised if an official version was released fairly soon), but it finds a now 19-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) meeting with Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) in a café in a similar set-up to the season 2 teaser with Allen the Alien.
Cecil is not happy (for a change) with Mark taking a lengthy break from crime-fighting, and tells the young hero that he needs more training if he hopes to face the oncoming Viltrumite threat. It's a fun teaser,...

In “When We Were Sisters,” Swiss filmmaker Lisa Brühlmann decided to stand on both sides of the camera: as both an actor and a director.
“After drama school, I quickly decided to study filmmaking. I wanted to learn it so that no one could say: ‘She’s just an actor.’ I’ve never felt I wasn’t taken seriously as a director, because I took myself seriously,” she says.
“Being an actor makes me a better director, especially when I’m working with younger performers. For me, it all feeds into each other.”
While juggling both jobs was “exhausting,” the role of pregnant Monica, who goes on holidays with her 15-year-old daughter Valeska, new boyfriend Jaques and his own daughter Lena, was too irresistible to pass on.
“That’s a good way to put it. It’s a great female character, because she has this dark side. Monica desperately wants to be a good mother,...

Longlegs star Nicolas Cage voiced the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir in the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and we’re going to have the chance to watch him play the character in live-action in the upcoming MGM+ and Prime Video series that’s going by the title Spider-Noir. That show is currently in production, and Cage has been spotted on set. Images of him can be seen in the Instagram embeds below – but before you scroll down, I’ll warn you that you shouldn’t expect to see Cage in the full Spider-Man Noir costume in these images. The spy pics only show him wearing a trenchcoat, with no sign of his mask.
Spider-Noir has Cage taking on the role of an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

Agatha All Along's Latest Cliffhanger May Solve One Of Marvel's Biggest Problems (Unless It Doesn't)
This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 4, "If I Can't Reach You, Let My Song Teach You."
Last week's episode of "Agatha All Along" left off on a major cliffhanger, namely, what our witches were going to do with the body of Sharon/Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp) after the group failed to protect her during the first trial in the "Big Little Lies House of Poison" (not the official name). The coven needs another witch to join them on the road with Sharon down for the count, so they agree to summon a "backup green witch."
The result is Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), a warrior witch known as Green Witch, an old (fren)enemy of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), and quite possibly one of the most dangerous forces in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've met Rio already this season, posing as a federal agent while Agatha...

[Update] A spokesperson from Warner Bros. Discovery has provided a statement regarding the lawsuit:
"The HBO and Max licensing agreements expire at the end of 2025, and this lawsuit is a baseless attempt by Sky and Comcast to try and gain leverage in its negotiations for our programming beyond that date. We know HBO branded shows are critical to Sky, as evidenced by their desire for over a year to find a way to renew our agreements, and this lawsuit makes it clear that Sky is deeply concerned about the viability of its business were it to lose our award-winning content. Wbd will vigorously defend itself from this unfounded lawsuit as we move forward undeterred with plans to launch Max, including the new HBO Harry Potter series, in the UK and other European markets in 2026."

Jared Harris, son of original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris, has taken his name out of the running to play the legendary “Harry Potter” wizard in HBO and Max’s upcoming television series based on J.K. Rowling’s book series. The “Mad Men” and “Chernobyl” actor was asked about playing Dumbledore during an interview on the The Independent series “Go to Bat,” to which he responded: “No, thank you.”
“Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand,” Jared added. “The films were fantastic – leave them alone.”
Jared is not interested in taking on his father’s beloved role, although he admitted to the publication that “a lot of storytelling” was left out of the original “Harry Potter” film franchise and will now be able to be filmed due to the expanded runtime of the HBO series. Each season of the show will cover one of Rowling’s books. Francesca Gardiner,...

Production wrapped earlier this summer on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later that intends to launch a brand new trilogy. Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the planned 28 Years trilogy, with Garland writing the first movie and Boyle back in the director’s chair to bring the horror to the screen.
On that note, an article over on Wired this week reveals that 28 Years Later was at least partially filmed with “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Wired details in their insightful report on the production, “…the Hollywood thriller, with its budget of $75 million, [is] the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones.”

28 Years Later is the Biggest Hollywood Feature Shot on an iPhone - Main Image
Despite Hollywood's most advanced technology, experimenting with equipment and storytelling has never stopped. Now, a new report says that Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later starring Cillian Murphy was only filmed through the lens of an iPhone 15 model.
Danny Boyle's Long-Awaited 28 Years Later was Shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max
The 2002 genre-bending 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later had been initially rumored to kickstart a new trilogy.
Hence, 28 Years Later will have Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy reprise his titular role as Jim, marking the beginning of a highly anticipated trilogy.
Considering the milestone of on-screen zombie portrayals that went after the franchise, the first of the threequel is going to do things a bit differently.

Starz just dropped a killer new trailer and key art for its upcoming dark comedy “Sweetpea,” premiering Thursday, October 10 (8pm Et/Pt). The six-part series stars Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis, a quiet wallflower who develops a vengeful and intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. Here’s the official description from Starz: Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression – people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, and her dad is really, really sick. Then everything in her life turns upside down. Rhiannon is pushed over the edge and loses control. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything… Rhiannon’s...

This post contains spoilers for the first two episodes of "Agatha All Along."
"Agatha All Along" is off to a fantastic start. In its first two episodes, the new Marvel series delivered a pitch-perfect prestige crime drama riff, a sapphic showdown of "Killing Eve" proportions, and a whole lot of seasonally appropriate witchy mischief. It also introduced an onslaught of new characters, from the coven Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) forms to travel the Witches Road to the mysterious teenager accompanying them.
The most mysterious new characters are a group known as the Salem's Seven, who Aubrey Plaza's character Rio warns Agatha will come for her at sundown. When the group does arrive, they're portrayed as black-clad wraiths or other dark entities. They're freaky and fast-moving, dressed a bit like Satanic nuns, and the only hint of their identities we're given is via a quick close up of the shadowy,...

The 71st Primetime Emmys were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2019. While it was a big night for shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Fleabag,” and “Chernobyl” in their respective genre fields, there were a fair amount of surprises that the Gold Derby odds didn’t predict. Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Jason Bateman winning Best Drama Directing for “Ozark’s” season two premiere, “Reparations.” How was he able to overcome his sixth place odds and win his first Emmy for directing?
When the nominations were announced on July 16th, 2019, “Game of Thrones” led the drama field with 32 bids for its eighth and final season. It was followed by “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “This Is Us,” all earning 9 noms each. “Game of Thrones” was touted to handily win its fourth Drama Series Emmy as well as its third for directing.

“Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.
Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.
Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.
Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”
Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

Sandra Oh has doubled her donation to the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival for prize-giving to $100,000.
During a reception at the Toronto Film Festival, the Killing Eve star added another $50,000 to make her overall contribution to the festival’s Reel Asian Fire Horse Award $100,000 over five years.
Oh, a longtime activist for Asian storytelling, told the reception: “Even though there is a place and a space for us now, it’s so important that we develop people, and this is the place where we can do it.” After wrapping her run playing Dr. Cristina Yang on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, Oh has championed stories that explore the Asian American identity.
The Korean Canadian actor was in Toronto this week as the honorary co-chair of the TIFF Tribute Awards held on Sunday evening. Oh also attended the 30th anniversary screening at TIFF of Mina Shum’s Double Happiness, in which she starred,...

Jack Huston has joined the cast of Spider-Noir. He will star as a series regular alongside Nicolas Cage, who plays an “aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.” Cage first voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
I’ve been re-watching Boardwalk Empire recently, and Huston is just phenomenal as Richard Harrow, a heartbreaking character who is one hell of a badass. It’s not known exactly who Huston will play in Spider-Noir, but it’s said he will be a bodyguard. Perhaps he’ll be watching over Brendan Gleeson’s character, who is expected to be the main villain of the series. The cast also includes Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Abraham Popoola as a World War I veteran, and Li Jun Li as a...

The search for the next Harry, Ron and Hermione has begun.
HBO has opened a casting call for the three stars of its upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series. Fans spotted the announcement circulating online Monday, and HBO confirmed its authenticity to Variety.
The casting call is looking for children who will be between the ages of 9-11 in April 2025 and who are residents of the U.K. and Ireland. The notice also says that casting will be inclusive to all races, ethnicities and gender identities.
“We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,” it reads. “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”
The application requires the actors to submit two short self-tapes, including a short poem or story — but nothing from “Harry Potter.”
“Please prepare a short poem or story of your choosing.

This is either going to be a rousing success or...something very different. HBO is officially casting the three main roles for its upcoming Harry Potter TV show, a from-the-ground-up adaptation of J.K. Rowling's iconic book series about a boy wizard and his friends being whisked off to a magical boarding school and battling the forces of darkness. Of course, eight movies adapting Rowling's seven books already exist. The pitch for the new TV series is that it will include things that the movies had to cut for time.
Harry Potter remains a gargantuan piece of intellectual property, so this is a big undertaking and a big deal.
