AMC Networks has bought out its partner for the cable channel BBC America, the company announced on Friday.

The entertainment giant spent $49 million in cash to acquire full control of the channel from BBC Studios, which held a 50.1 percent stake in the network.

The channel was originally launched in 1998 by the commercial arm of the BBC, then known as BBC Worldwide, which allowed the British public service broadcaster to present its comedies and dramas to a stateside audience while allowing it to tap into various advertising opportunities.

BBC America was originally distributed by Discovery Communications, but the partnership ended in 2014 when AMC Networks acquired a minority stake in the channel. It continued to operate under a licensing agreement with BBC Studios, during which it replaced a considerable amount of British programming with re-runs of “Star Trek,” “Law & Order,...

AMC Networks has rolled up BBC America, paying $42 million in cash for the cable network.

The news was disclosed in the company’s third-quarter earnings release. The transaction, which gives AMC Networks the 50.1% of the network that it did not previously have, closed November 1. AMC Networks and the BBC entered into the venture in 2014.

Signature BBC America originals like Killing Eve and Orphan Black became major components of the overall AMC Networks programming portfolio in the 2010s. More recently, streaming has become the focus for most traditional media companies, leaving linear cable networks to wither, though they still throw off significant cash.

Like its peers in the cable programming sector, AMC Networks will often roadblock programming across multiple networks, as is the case with BBC America.

BBC America now fully and officially belongs to AMC Networks. The company revealed that it acquired the remaining 50.1% of the channel from BBC Studios in a deal that took place last Friday.

The remaining half of the company was paid for in $42 million cash, which was distributed from the savings balance sheet. “We now own 100% of the iconic channel with full operational control, and look forward to what the future holds,” Patrick O’Connell, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of AMC Networks, said during the company’s third quarter earnings call for 2024.

O’Connell assured analysts that moving forward AMC will continue to have a “close commercial relationship with BBC Studios” when it comes to the channel, ensuring that the brand and its programming remain at the same caliber. The company will continue to fully consolidate BBC America, as it did prior to this transaction.

The U.S. media company has owned a 49.9% stake in the channel since 2014, which it purchased for $200 million in a deal with BBC Worldwide. With this new transaction, which closed Nov. 1, AMC Networks gains the remaining 50.1% of BBC America in exchange for $42 million in cash.

Per AMC Networks’ Q3 earnings results, which were released Friday, AMC Networks “now owns 100% of the BBC America business, with full operational control, and will continue to fully consolidate BBC America.”

Along with “Mad Men,” “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad,” some of the shows AMC Networks is best known for are past BBC America hits and critical darlings, including “Killing Eve,” “Orphan Black” and “Doctor Who” (which now airs on Disney+).

AMC Networks says “future contractual programming commitments to BBC Studios would have been significantly reduced,” had the deal been closed by Sept.

Earlier this year, we learned that Phoebe Waller-Bridge's planned Tomb Raider TV series had received the green light at Amazon Prime Video.

Handed a series order, the live-action reboot was described as an "epic" and "globe-trotting" series by Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke. Visit Films has acquired international sales rights excluding Canada for “Can I Get a Witness?,” a poetic and satirical sci-fi fable written and directed by Canadian auteur Ann Marie Fleming.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, adapting bigger and bolder storylines to live-action, Sony too is moving ahead with its Spider-Man Universe. Starring Nicolas Cage, the studio has been developing the series Spider-Noir for quite some time now, and the first looks of the series were recently leaked. Reprising his role from the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, this time in live-action, fans are excited and waiting eagerly for the series.

Despite Sony’s track record of Marvel flicks (other than the Spider-Verse movies) being, bluntly stating, terrible, the prospect of seeing Cage as the live version of his character does seem alluring. So, without further ado, here is all we know about the latest and upcoming series.

Thankfully, our first look at the live-action Spider-Man Noir costume has arrived, thanks to a handful of set photos. Although we likely won't see it for a while, HBO's new Harry Potter TV show is one of the biggest series on the horizon. How could it not be? The Harry Potter books and movies remain incredibly popular and influential, and the controversies surrounding author and executive producer J.K. Rowling add some spice to the proceedings.

HBO is moving ahead with the show; Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner while Mark Mylod will direct several episodes. Meanwhile, casting directors are on the hunt for new actors to play Harry, Ron and Hermione, the iconic characters at the center of the story. Speaking at the television industry trade show Mipcom, Warner Bros. Discovery executive Channing Dungey said that “writing staff was in place and they’re doing what they need to do, and casting calls have opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along,” per Variety.

Right now, Netflix is nearing the end of filming on the fourth season of its monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher. By any standard, this is an important juncture for the series, both onscreen and off. In terms of the story, season 4 marks a turning point as the show heads into its endgame, which will conclude with a fifth and final season set to film in 2025. Actor Liam Hemsworth is now taking up the mantle of Geralt of Rivia after Henry Cavill left the series following its third season.

The Garvey sisters are back – and dealing with another body – two years after viewers last saw them on screen.

In the first trailer for Season 2, which is set two years after the events of Season 1, Eva (Sharon Horgan), Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) are apparently trying to move on with their lives, with troubled Grace getting a second chance at love.

But the past – including Grace’s dead husband Jp (Claes Bang) – seems determined to haunt them while the present throws up another corpse.

Production wrapped earlier this summer on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later that intends to launch a brand new trilogy. Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the planned 28 Years trilogy, with Garland writing the first movie and Boyle back in the director’s chair to bring the horror to the screen.

On that note, an article over on Wired this week reveals that 28 Years Later was at least partially filmed with “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Starz announced today that its new Sweetpea series will premiere on Thursday, October 10. The darkly comic coming-of-age story has already revealed a new trailer and key art.

Led by Ella Purnell, the Sweetpea series premieres on Thursday, October 10, at midnight on the Starz app. On linear, it will debut on Starz at 8 p.m. Et/Pt in the U.S. and on Friday, October 11 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt in Canada.

The following week, Sweetpea will move to Fridays, dropping at midnight on the Starz app and airing on linear at 8 p.m. Et/Pt in the U.S. and 10 p.m. Et/Pt in Canada for the remainder of the season.

Exclusive: Killing Eve co-producer Charlotte Essex is heading to UK indie Roughcut TV to develop a slate of projects for its drama push.

Essex will build on existing relationships while seeking new and emerging writers for her slate, which comes as Stath Lets Flats maker Roughcut ups its drama ambitions.

Essex most recently produced Insomnia for Left Bank Pictures/Paramount+, Who is Erin Carter? for Left Bank Pictures/Netflix and the fourth and final series of Killing Eve for Sid Gentle Films/AMC. She has previously script exec’d the fourth series of ITV’s Unforgotten and the BBC’s Gold Digger.

Roughcut, which is run by The Office producer Ash Atalla, has been producing comedies for years but recently expanded into drama under Marianna Abbotts. The indie made Coma for Channel 5 and is producing Little Disasters for Paramount+. Earlier this year it tied with Fremantle on a drama development deal.

The 71st Primetime Emmys were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2019. “Shōgun” star Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Sawai was honored for her captivating leading performance as Lady Toda Mariko in the acclaimed FX series.

Her historic Emmy win comes six years after Sandra Oh became the first Asian performer to be nominated in the lead drama actress category in 2018 for BBC America’s “Killing Eve.” Oh was nominated three more times for the same role, but never won.

Sawai wasn’t the only Asian actress hoping to make a stamp on history. Maya Erskine was also nominated in Sawai’s category for her lead role in Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Sawai, who was born in New Zealand to Japanese parents and is mainly based in Japan, was considered the frontrunner to win her category, which had heavy competition.

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.

Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”

Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

During a reception at the Toronto Film Festival, the Killing Eve star added another $50,000 to make her overall contribution to the festival’s Reel Asian Fire Horse Award $100,000 over five years.

Jack Huston will star as a series regular opposite Nicolas Cage in Spider-Noir, the upcoming MGM+ and Prime Video live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir.

From executive producers/co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot and Sony Pictures TV, Spider-Noir tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.

Huston is believed to be playing a bodyguard. Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, and Li Jun Li also star in the series.

Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. Harry Bradbeer is set to direct, and executive produce the first two episodes. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.

HBO has opened a casting call for the three stars of its upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series. Fans spotted the announcement circulating online Monday, and HBO confirmed its authenticity to Variety.

The casting call is looking for children who will be between the ages of 9-11 in April 2025 and who are residents of the U.K. and Ireland. The notice also says that casting will be inclusive to all races, ethnicities and gender identities.

“We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting,” it reads. “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”

The application requires the actors to submit two short self-tapes, including a short poem or story — but nothing from “Harry Potter.”
