Many different titles were proposed for the film before production. The eventual working title for the film was "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" because originally the fight scene was imagined as suddenly becoming a slow-motion act of savagery against Zach during which the song "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" by the Beach Boys plays, beginning with the first punch. The song "Forget About Us" was eventually written for the film, giving the film its new and lasting name. Interestingly, one of the song's lyrics is "Wouldn't it be nice, to leave this place for a while?"
The movie was filmed over the course of 7 full days.
In the scene where Kevin attempts to puncture and shotgun a beer with the patch cord, it was filmed in one take. When that scene was written in the script, it was not known if the dull cord would actually be strong enough to puncture a full beer can. Many ideas were tossed around as to how the crew should fake it. Ideas ranging from a preexisting hole drilled and covered with a silver patch, replacing the patch cord with a sharp needle tool to punch the hole (which could have resulted in injury if attempted), and even just using the actor's finger to cover a preexisting hole. Instead, they rolled the camera and tried it to see if it would work, and to everyone's surprise it actually worked. In the scene where Kevin punctures the beer with the patch cord, that is genuine surprise on the actor's face. Take that physics.
The film crew had not heard any of the band players perform until they began filming the party scenes.
Part of the film focuses on the exploits of a high school band called Icepick Lobotomy, so music is an important part of the film. This is true in more ways than one. The characters of Charlie, Mick, and Keith are named after 3 of the 4 members of The Rolling Stones: Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards.
