In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Ctam and Common Sense Media have partnered on StreamSafely Summer Camp,, an online destination at StreamSafely.com where parents and kids can find safe, family-friendly programming without the risks that come with pirated content. The site includes a collection of 46 movies curated by the nonprofit Common Sense Media available through June, July and August, along with a checklist for parents on safe streaming.
A Ctam study from October 2022 found that 38% of households with kids report accessing pirated content a few times a year, well above the mean for the US adult population overall (26%). Piracy sites appear free, but they make money by stealing personal information, often by installing destructive malware or ransomware on users’ home computers. Digital video piracy accounts for more than $50 billion in revenue losses for the global tv and movie industry, according to the study.

From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.
Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.
Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. The companies already have a number of projects in development.”

Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.

Allow it. The low-budget indie darling "Attack the Block," which is about an alien invasion in London, singlehandedly kickstarted John Boyega's career in 2011 and turned into a cult hit thanks to those who sang its praises early on, finally crossing into the mainstream enough to justify a long-awaited sequel (while also leading us oblivious folk in the U.S. to completely misunderstand what the slang phrase "Allow it" even means in the first place). Written and directed by Joe Cornish ("The Kid Who Would Be King"), the thrilling and incisive action/comedy has taken a long, winding, but thoroughly rewarding path to reaching the current level of acclaim it now rightfully enjoys.
And those involved with the sequel are aiming their sights even higher.
"Attack the Block 2" (assuming it even goes by that title) won't have the element of surprise on its side this time around, but Cornish...

The jumpscare is a fundamental building block of the horror genre — they frighten the wits out of us right when our guard is down. An effective jumpscare can be pretty thrilling or jarring depending on the intensity of it, but as most horror fans will tell you, they're hard not to be fond of.
While certain filmmakers heavily rely on jump scares in film and television, there's much to be said about storytellers who prefer to build an atmosphere of fear. It could be a dimly lit home where the protagonist is seen walking down a large, empty hallway. It could be a glimpse of a terrorizing shadow in the dark. Perhaps they're both taking place against the backdrop of eerie music — or pin-drop, anxiety-inducing silence. Both evoke a consistent feeling of fear, but how do you replicate that consistency in a show where its characters fight with ghosts?

Joe Cornish is back with another story about kids fighting for our future. The director of "Attack the Block" and "The Kid Who Would Be King" is the showrunner behind Netflix's "Lockwood & Co." The adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's book series pits young folks against deadly ghosts. In season 1, Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman), George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati), and Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes) join forces as a scrappy team of paranormal investigators in a world haunted by the dead.

In "Attack The Block," Joe Cornish pit a teenage street gang against alien invaders. In "The Kid Who Would Be King," a middle school boy faced off against the powerful sorceress Morgana. So continuing the trend of British youngsters being just a little out of their depths in the fight against a powerful, mythical force, the writer-director is back with an adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's supernatural YA series, "Lockwood & Co." Which means, you guessed it, a team of teenagers are banding together to take down ghosts.

"All it takes is a few big cases" Netflix has revealed the full-length official trailer for Lockwood & Co., a new supernatural series made by the acclaimed UK filmmaker Joe Cornish (director of Attack the Block and The Kid Who Would Be King). This is based on a book series that involves a ghost-hunters group called Lockwood & Co. - a small agency in London that runs independent of any adult supervision. A tiny startup, run by two teenage boys and a newly arrived, supremely psychically gifted girl, a renegade trio destined to unravel a mystery that will change the course of history. Starring Ruby Stokes as Lucy Carlyle, Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood, Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George Karim, plus Ivanno Jeremiah, Jack Bandeira, Morven Christie, Rhianna Dorris, and Paddy Holland. Yeah this concept still looks like Ghostbusters + Harry Potter, but with Joe Cornish behind the lens it actually looks awesome anyway!

For the first time in a “Trek” series, the main cast is made up of alien species, as these six young characters end up commandeering an abandoned Starfleet vessel and must learn how to operate it in order to survive, with Mulgrew’s Janeway serving as their guide as the ship’s emergency training hologram.

A sequel to UK alien invasion thriller Attack The Block is in the works, which will reunite writer/director Joe Cornish with star John Boyega.
Studiocanal and Film4 confirmed that early development has begun on Attack The Block 2, a decade after the release of the original in 2011.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but Boyega will return as Moses, an inner-city teenage gang leader that proved his breakout role before being cast in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and more recently in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology film series.

Don’t get too taken in by a first impression — that’s a lesson learned by the characters in “Monday,” but it’s valuable advice for the audience as well. What starts out as a sexy, sun-soaked romp becomes a heartbreaking examination of two people who are absolutely wrong for each other.
Not just any filmmaker can craft sex scenes that are both exhilarating in the moment and, in the aggregate, essential to building plot and character, but director Argyris Papadimitropoulos manages that delicate balance. The Greek locations (shot by Hristos Karamanis) are gorgeous, but what starts like a travelogue winds up more of a tragedy.
We first meet Chloe at a party, drunk and leaving screaming voicemails for the boyfriend who has stood her up. Host Argyris (Giorgos Pyrpasopoulos) introduces her to his friend Mickey (Sebastian Stan), the DJ, since they’re both American. Both attracted to him and emotionally fragile,...

Netflix announced Sunday that it is starting development on seven new shows that will be filmed in the U.K., with Andy Serkis, Rowan Atkinson and “1917” director Sam Mendes among the attached talent.
The shows will be developed by the streamer’s vice president of U.K. Original Series, Anne Mensah and will be produced alongside upcoming seasons of shows like “The Crown” and “Sex Education.”
“Setting up a team entirely based in the U.K. was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic program makers we have here — to provide a space for writers, producers, directors and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale. Netflix has added seven new series to its original content slate out of the U.K., working with the likes of former “Mr. Bean” star Rowan Atkinson, Sam Mendes and Andy Serkis, along with new writing talent including Sarah Dollard and Sophie Petzal.
The shows, commissioned by the Original Series team as part of the streaming giant’s continued investment in the U.K., will all be written and produced domestically.
From Mendes and his Neal Street Productions is a six-part show called “The Red Zone,” which mysteriously teases “a comedy about football, but also not about football.” Meanwhile, Atkinson will star in short-form, 10-part comedy series “Man vs Bee,” which finds him housesitting a luxurious mansion while duking it out with a pesky bee.
Elsewhere, in a project executive produced by Serkis, “Giri/Haji” creator Joe Barton is on board to adapt Sally Green’s “Half Bad” trilogy of books,...

Any time Netflix releases a big, glossy original movie that’s clearly been designed to draw in the widest audience possible, people almost always tend to flock to their social media accounts and start demanding a sequel the very same day the title in question arrives. Whether you call it enthusiasm or entitlement, subscribers often bombard the streaming service with pleas for further adventures almost as soon as the credits have faded to black.
As a financially-driven company that’s actively on the lookout to gather as many franchises under their roof as possible, Netflix are usually happy to oblige, especially this summer when Extraction, The Old Guard, Spenser Confidential and Project Power both dominated the Top 10 most-watched list and left themselves wide open for sequels.
The latest Netflix Original set to act as the launchpad for a multi-film series is Enola Holmes, which only debuted today and is already proving to be massively popular.

So far, the 2020 box office rebound is real. Time will tell. But early signs remain positive, with this weekend continuing to build on the 12% increase to date over the same period in 2019. Last year the weekend between King Birthday and the Super Bowl took in $105 million. This year has a shot at $125 million, which would be close to a 20% improvement.
If so, thriller “The Turning” (Universal) and action comedy “The Gentlemen” (Stx) will play a minor role in that result, along with the calendar, once again. For distributors setting release dates, the second weekend box-office can be as important as the first. With the Super Bowl looming, opening now is risky.
Fortunately current titles should make up the slack, with newbies doing better than last year, when the combined gross of long-forgotten “The Kid Who Would Be King” and “Serenity” totaled under $12 million. At best, new entries could double that number.

For his performance as the one-and-only Elton John in the biopic Rocketman, Taron Egerton nabbed the best actor award in the motion picture musical or comedy category during the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony. Playing one of the greatest romantic singers of our time, he's also a romantic himself, bringing his girlfriend, Emily Thomas, as his companion to the star-studded event. Like Egerton, Thomas is a Hollywood badass, working as an assistant director on some of our favorite blockbusters in recent years. Here's what you need to know about their relationship and Thomas's behind-the-scenes work in the entertainment industry.
Egerton and Thomas have been dating for a while, despite a brief breakup in November 2018, at which point they had been together for two years. In Vogue's April 2019 issue, Egerton said he and his girlfriend had split up but recently rekindled their romance.
As they were both devoted to their work, spending time together was hard.

There have been plenty of box office hits in 2019 from “Avengers: Endgame” to “Joker” to “Us.” But as always, there are films that end up taking a dive once they hit theaters. Some have been failed attempts to revive flailing franchises. Others are poorly reviewed films that moviegoers barely notice on the cinema marquee. Either way, they’ve made this list.
“Replicas”
$9.2 million grossed ($30 million budget) — Keanu Reeves has had a great 2019. “John Wick: Chapter 3” was a hit, a viral video of his E3 appearance became a meme, and sequels to “Bill & Ted” and “The Matrix” are in his future. But back in January, he starred in this critically panned sci-fi tale of a neuroscientist who defies the law and scientific ethics to create clones of his dead family.

She played Harry Potter‘s Hermione Granger in London and on Broadway, and now Noma Dumezweni has been tapped for a series regular role in HBO Max’s Made For Love, opposite Ray Romano in the half-hour series adaptation of Alissa Nutting’s dark, absurd and cynically poignant novel of divorce and revenge.
Dumezweni will play the role of ‘Fiffany,’ described as a lovestruck marine biologist who supplies the brains behind the Made For Love technology. She joins the previously cast Romano and Christin Milioti. Patrick Somerville (Netflix’s Maniac) is the showrunner for Made for Love.
In addition to originating the Hermione role for London’s and Broadway’s award winning Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Dumezweni won an Olivier Award for her West End performance in A Raisin in the Sun, and played the title role in Linda at the Royal Court, among many other productions.

Sweden-born actress Rebecca Ferguson, already coming off a busy 2019 with “Men In Black: International” and “The Kid Who Would Be King,” will soon be seen in director Mike Flanagan’s sequel to Stephen King’s “The Shining,” “Doctor Sleep.” But the upcoming role that’s even more anticipated by certain audiences is her turn in Denis Villeneuve’s Frank Herbert adaptation, “Dune.” Slated for a theatrical release on November 20, 2020, the film also stars Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet. (IndieWire recently broke down everything you need to know about the upcoming sci-fi epic here.)
In a recent video interview with Fandom while touting “Doctor Sleep,” Ferguson revealed the first details about her “Dune” character, Lady Jessica.
“Something that Denis Villeneuve and the writers have really taken into consideration is [that] this book was written back in the day when women were portrayed differently to what we are expecting nowadays — which we call gender equality,...

Rebecca Ferguson opens up about bringing Rose the Hat, the villain of Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, to the big screen.
A role as the villain of any Stephen King movie is a big enough deal as it is, but what about the antagonist in the sequel to one of the most beloved King adaptations ever made? It's a huge deal. Fortunately, when Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the The Shining, arrives in theaters later this fall, it will count on the extremely talented Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) to bring the evil Rose the Hat to the big screen.
Well, evil might be too strong a word, according to Ferguson, who spoke to us on the phone a few months after our initial visit to the set of Doctor Sleep, which also stars Ewan McGregor as Dan Torrance and is written and directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House...

Hollywood studios will release a flurry of mid-budget films from all across the genre spectrum over the next several weeks. But don’t expect any more big opening weekends until “It Chapter Two” next month, as the remainder of August will likely see openings well under $30 million.
With that in mind, “Hobbs & Shaw” would seem likely to coast to another No. 1 finish. But some of the newcomers have a chance to steal the top spot should the “Fast & Furious” spinoff have a larger-than-expected second-weekend drop. Monday grosses were not a good sign at $5.8 million, a 63% drop from the film’s $15.8 million Sunday gross.
Analysts who spoke with TheWrap pointed to Paramount’s “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” as the film with the best chance of a possible No. 1 opening. Directed by James Bobin and produced by Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies, the film is a slightly more...
