Watching Aakasha Mittayee brings the parent in you as you wonder what you would do if you were in the shoes of the characters played by Kalabhavan Shajon with absolute realism and Jayaram in one of his first major roles in years that doesn't suck. It tries to show you how some parents consider their children as objects and restrict their activities since childhood because they want them to get a good education and be the best. That's not how the world works, and director Samuthirakani conveys that even if that means being a bit preachy. The story escalates quickly because the writers want to show a lot and a 120-minute tearjerker is not enough. But, as a film, Aakasha Mittayee excels in storytelling, cast performance, and the message. The direction, among other things, is pathetic and makes the film look inferior and unappealing. If repetitive score, amateur direction, and a sermon-like story that tries to educate you are things that you dislike, then this is definitely not a film you would appreciate. But that does not mean Aakasha Mittayee does not merit attention. It is one of the better films of 2017. TN.
