Since this was a co-production of Austrian, Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian media companies, all actors were speaking their lines in their own mother tongues. Maria Theresa herself, like all members of the highest European nobility, was educated in many languages. She spoke German, Czech, Hungarian, Italian, French, Spanish and Latin.
Because both her Vienna winter residence (Hofburg Palace) and her Vienna summer residence (Schönbrunn Palace) were unavailable as locations, all interior scenes were shot in the Czech Valtice Palace, about 80 km north of Vienna.
