The opening narration is part of a Ronald Reagan speech to the United Nations General Assembly on the 21st of September 1987.
The town's football team are called the Dropbears. Dropbears are a fictional predatory creature said to resemble a koala which drop from trees onto human victims. They are generally used as an in-joke on tourists.
The "alien" crop being cultivated is an East Asian fruit called the fingered citron, also known as Buddha's Hand.
A sequel to this movie was announced on 31st May 2018 as 'Occupation 2' which eventually got re-named as Occupation: Rainfall (2020). The budget of the follow-up was reportedly about three times that of the original.
Cast members Roy Billing and Temuera Morrison both previously worked on the New Zealand feature film Other Halves (1984) about thirty-four years earlier.
