I personally had to research this case for my paper. The case itself had so many suspicions, stakeholders involved, and dramas, so I was very excited for this movie. However, the director does not investigate deeper into the case or hold anyone or any organization responsible. He just accounts the event very dry. Of course, lawyer Lee Joon-young is an interesting person, but the director focuses only on his emotion and action. In comparison, '1987' released at the same year and also accounting for the historical event bring various perspectives to that one account. Those fully developed stories of all characters are put together in pieces making the picture bigger and rounder. On the other hand, 'New Trial' seems so linear and simple. It is just disappointing that there can be more dramas and stakeholders like the real case.

Strongly Recommended.
One of Korea's finest films with excellent script, direction, and terrific performances by the two main leads. The story is based on a real miscarriage of justice and a lawyer who becomes the attorney and man he was meant to be through his hard work to clear a completely innocent young man. Strongly recommended as still one more entry in the growing cache of great Korean dramas and films from the best filmmakers in the world today. My only caveat is some scenes are graphic, wrenching, and heartbreaking, but they had to be to tell the truth, so steel yourself. Otherwise, the story is inspiring and lifting, and I think viewers will love both leads and the characters they play, so settle in for a great film.

a movie from reality and let us think about the surroundings. when i watched this movie, i ask myself "does it still happen".
staying in prison for ten years is a big thing. the story doesn't happened to you, but you may experienced local officers's bullying.
i only saw this news in newspaper before. maybe the press use only 20 words to state the fact. i only tried to guess what the victim's families live, but only getting a rough picture.
from this movie i know more about the feeling of the victim and his family. i think this is the most important thing of this movie.

I had no idea about this movie. It kept me really engrossed like what going to happen next. It showed the difficulty faced by the victim and his family when wrongly accused. The acting was superb especially by Kang Ha-neul. He nailed it and now I have become a fan of him and would love to see his awesome acting in other movies. I would really recommend this movie to viewers.
The film would have been liked by me had it been seen in 90s .The Police corruption, friendship drama,mother-son emotion ....nothing more than that..

So if I had to write down everything that I loved about this film I would have to copy-paste the whole script with highlights and notes all over it, complete with thank-you letters to the actors and everyone involved in the making.
Now, of course, some parts can be criticized but frankly I loved it too much to even dig for those.
The performances were beyond amazing, that hug scene took my heart and emotions, chopped it into million pieces and spit on it at the end. Absolutely superb. Kang Ha Neul never ceases to amaze me, and Jung Woo was -as always- freaking good.
Be it my love for films and cinematography or movies based on true stories or my undying interest in injustice and corruption of our societies or admiration for good performances or maybe all of these combined made this movie one of my all time favorites for sure

I know it for cent percent that south Korean movies have altogether a different flavor. New Trial is yet again a class film with all the shades of emotion. It makes me think that how do Koreans come out so good in film narration. The acting is awesome and the blend of emotion is just perfect. You feel sucked into the film. They really have something so unique and different when presenting a film. I sometimes wonder why no other countries make films like the way Koreans do. I highly recommend this movie and I am sure it will be highly appreciated. Do not assume that it is a court room drama. Just watch it and if you like it give your honest reviews. This way we can show our appreciation to the director, actors and the entire crew members. This will boost their efforts. I did really enjoy the film. The world should learn how movies are made.

When i Watched this movie i wasn't expect much as the movie was about wrongly accused boy who got poisoned for 10 years. But to my surprise this movie was one of the most best i have ever seen. The direction, acting, story was superb and like many korean movies this movie also had the nice thriller screenplay.
This movie is about a boy who got accused of murder and sentenced 15 years of prison but got to served 10 years and released. He is no longer the boy who he used to be before going to prison and also he seemed as a killer by everyone who knows about the murder.this makes his like miserable and also effecting his mental state.A attorney who has not won any case but is desperate to win the case so that to make name and money wants to be assigned to retrial of this case. The boy is reluctant as he has no hope left from anyone since he was framed for murder and lost everything due to this. .whats happens and does the boy get justice or not is shown in this movie.
The conclusion of this movie is satisfying and whatever other say, i think this movie is best.those producer and director who are producing the worst movies now a days should learn about how to make movie from korea .my rating is 9 out of 10.I recommend everyone to watch this movie.

Bad dialog. The leading actor is so annoying and unlikable. His constant overacting, non-stop exaggerating almost wore my patience thin and kill my interest to go on. Storyline is actually not bad but again, ruined by terrible dialog, just too cliched. The bad detectives' scenario was ridiculed, they looked and acted more like thugs or gangsters, completely dramatized and unrealistic.

First of all, there is trumpery in no scene. So prudently directed and discreetly written. Kim Hae Sook is as awesome as always. Jung Woo's nuanced comical stroke in the most pathetic situation has rendered the movie with a sense of equanimity. Kang Ha Neul is such an adept actor that the first dialogue in the movie which is a ' Yeah' by him will make you wonder with the thought how he could deliver that single word with such a proper simple rural intonation. Every actor has executed her/his part so perfectly and subtly! It is short, salient and excellent. It's been a long time I have watched this well crafted, beautifully acted and sensibly planned of a movie! A must watch.
