In Howard Phillips Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" (Pub. 1936) the Marsh family plays an important role. Obed Marsh is the sea captain that brings the worship of Dagon to the little community and over the generations the people become enslaved to it.
The professor in the movie states that he is working at the Miskatonic University, which means that the movie's story takes place within the universe created by author H.P. Lovecraft and within his Cthulhu mythos.
