The 2017-18 traditional Nielsen television season is in the books, and NBC can claim its second-straight (and fourth out of the last five years) ratings victory in a row among adults 18-49.
CBS, however, came from behind to win its 10th straight season (and 15th out of 16) among total viewers. That’s damn impressive given the circumstances. With both the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics this year, it seemed like ’17-’18 would be the season NBC could unseat CBS in terms of overall eyeballs. Instead, the Les Moonves-led network caught up and passed Bob Greenblatt’s last week, just in time for the victor to gloat at its upfront presentation.
Since we brought up “damn impressive” comebacks, how about ABC? Post-Olympics, ABC was deep in fourth place. Led by “Roseanne,” ABC has been No. 1 in the key demo ever since. All told, the Disney-owned broadcaster finished in a three-way...

As Silicon Valley continues its quest to conquer television — with companies such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Google/YouTube and Facebook spending billions of dollars on original content, driving up prices — how does traditional media company like CBS compete? The question came up during CBS Corp.’s quarterly earnings call today.
While CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves acknowledged the issue with comments including “There is a lot more competition out there” and “The cost of poker, in most cases, has gone up,” he did not seem too concerned about the recent talent raid launched by the deep-pocketed digital newcomers, illustrated by the blockbuster overall deals at Netflix for mega creator/producers Ryan Murphy (as much as $300 million) and Shonda Rhimes (at least $100 million).
“We are pretty competitive,” Moonves said. “On broadcast, we offer creators visibility and something called back-end. There’s a guy called Chuck Lorre who’s made more than...

To paraphrase John Lennon, before Action Comics there was nothing. Action Comics was the comic book industry equivalent of the Big Bang. Prior to Action Comics you had comic books, but these were usually collections of previously published newspaper strips, repackaged to encourage people to double dip, or newspaper style strips with Flash Gordon type characters. In fact Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Superman’s creators and effectively the fathers of the superhero comic book industry (Stan Lee can be a honorary uncle) originally conceived of Superman as a newspaper strip, and had tried to shop it around but no newspaper syndicate would touch it. Their loss was most certainly our gain.
Action Comics issue 1, dated April 1938, was rushed out by National Periodicals (DC) to capitalise on the growing fad for comic books. Their Detective Comics book, still a year...

“Will & Grace” was well-known for its cavalcade of guest stars during its original run, gobbling up double-digit Emmy nominations, and even wins for Bobby Cannavale (2005) and Leslie Jordan (2006). The NBC sitcom hasn’t missed a step in this revival season, bringing back many old favorites while also introducing multiple memorable characters from new guest stars. But which guest stars should be singled out for Emmy nominations this year? Vote in our poll below.
Cannavale and Jordan, who play Will’s (Eric McCormack) ex-boyfriend Vince D’Angelo and Karen’s (Megan Mullally) nemesis Beverley Leslie, respectively, won Emmys for their roles in the original series and are now eligible again this year. Both have great showcase episodes in the revival, with Will reevaluating how things went wrong with Vince in “The Wedding” and Beverley revealing his very obvious truth to Karen in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Crying.

Annie Potts: Dolly Parton inspired the look of Meemaw on ‘Young Sheldon’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Annie Potts found inspiration for the look of her character, Meemaw, on the hit CBS comedy “Young Sheldon” from one of the biggest guest stars she worked with on “Designing Women”: Dolly Parton. As she explains in our exclusive video interview (watch above), Connie Tucker may be a grandmother but she is not ready for a rocking chair just yet. She thinks the tough-talking Texan would have modeled herself on Parton who was starring in “Steel Magnolias” in 1989, the year that this prequel to “The Big Bang Theory” is set.

Another star from a galaxy far far away will be making an appearance on CBS’ hit comedy series The Big Bang Theory.
Star Wars’ Mark Hamill will be among the guest stars confirmed for the upcoming Season 11 finale of Big Bang, which will feature the wedding of Sheldon and Amy. It is unclear whether, like fellow Star Wars icons Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones who had appeared on the show before him, Hamill will play himself.
Also guest starring in the finale, airing on May 10, is Kathy Bates. Sheldon’s family will be well represented, with Laurie Metcalf, Courtney Henggeler and Jerry O’Connell, who play his mother Mary, twin sister Missy and older brother Georgie, respectively, all in attendance.
Also on the guest list for the finale are recurring Big Bang actors John Ross Bowie and Wil Wheaton as well as Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and Teller.

Unsurprisingly, the premiere of “Roseanne” beat out all its competition in the delayed viewing ratings for week 27 of the 2017-2018 broadcast season, which began on March 26.
As previously reported, the one-hour premiere on March 27 rose to 27.3 million viewers in Live+7, an increase of 8.8 million viewers over the Live+Same Day haul of 18.5 million. That is the largest-ever seven day lift for any show on any network, topping the the previous record of 7.9 million set by the debut of fellow ABC show “The Good Doctor” back in September. In addition, “Roseanne” rose to an 8.1 rating in adults 18-49, an increase of 2.9 rating points over the Live+Same Day rating of a 5.2.
Now, with the full week’s numbers in, it is clear just how badly “Roseanne” beat its broadcast competitors. It’s nearest competition in total viewers was fellow ABC series “The Good Doctor,” which grew by 6.3 million to 15.8 million total.

CBS has renewed praised comedy series Mom for a sixth season. The pickup makes it a clean sweep for top comedy producer Chuck Lorre, with all three of his CBS shows already renewed for next season five weeks before the May upfronts. Laurie Metcalf’s date to the Oscars was her daughter Zoe Perry, but come the Emmys, the two could be rivals. Mother and daughter are both in contention for Best Comedy Supporting Actress — “Roseanne” for the former and “Young Sheldon” for the latter.
While Perry is admittedly a longshot for a nomination — our odds have her at 100/1 — Metcalf is the second favorite at 9/2 odds, trailing two-time defending champ Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”). With three previous Emmy wins, Metcalf is “Roseanne”‘s most decorated performer and is the likeliest of the revival’s cast to score a nomination. Coming fresh off an Oscar nomination also doesn’t hurt.

But if Perry, whose father is “Scandal”‘s Jeff Perry, makes the cut, not only would she be up against mom, but it’d be for an Emmy-nominated role her mother originated.
