Films directed by women dominate the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Giornate Degli Autori, which has unveiled a lineup full of first works and special events including “Peaches Goes Bananas,” French filmmaker Marie Losier’s tribute to iconic Canadian electropop provocateur Peaches.
Shot over the course of 17 years, “Peaches Goes Bananas” provides an intimate portrait of the former schoolteacher, who during the 1980s moved from Canada to Berlin and became a queer feminist icon, breaking taboos and “transforming her body into art,” as the doc’s synopsis puts it.
The competition of the Giornate – which is also known as Venice Days – comprises 10 world premieres, six of which are first works, within a selection that artistic director Gaia Furrer described in her notes as “rigorous” and “stylistically eclectic.”
Furer underlined that 16 out of the section’s 25 titles are directed by women, a fact she called significant “because many of them...

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is set to re-release Tarsem’s cult 2006 film The Fall in a newly restored 4K version from 27 September 2024 in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world.
The 4K restoration will have its world premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival where it will play on the Piazza Grande. Mubi will subsequently stream it on its service.
Set in Los Angeles, circa 1920s, the visually striking movie charts the story of an immigrant girl in a hospital recovering from a fall who strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man. He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination.
Filmed over four years in 20 different locations across the globe, the movie starred Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. The film was originally presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, with a script from Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis.
Reviews were mixed for the film and it failed to ignite at the box office, but its visuals were highly praised and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, calling it a singular work: “You might want to see [it] for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it,” he said.
After debuting at Toronto back in 2006, the film became very hard to track down on streaming services and director Tarsem recently expressed hope the feature would soon get a revival.
Tarsem Singh, known as Tarsem, is also known for movies such as The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, The Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Self/less with Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker is also well known for his music videos, including Rem’s Losing My Religion, which won MTV’s Best Video Award. In 2023, he directed his first feature film in Punjabi, Dear Jassi which won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Warner Bros. Discovery sports portfolio has long been grounded in offerings from the major U.S. leagues. Now the company is adding international flavor to its mix.
Warner has acquired the U.S. rights to the French Open, the tennis tournament also known as Roland-Garros, according to people familiar with the matter, snatching up a property that has primarily been associated with NBC Sports for many years. In Europe, however, where Warner Bros. Discovery operates the massive Eurosport pay-tv networks, the Open has been part of its offerings since 1989. Warner’s new French Open deal will commence in 2025.
The new pact will give Warner rights to telecast the event in both the U.S. and Europe, according to these people, and brings a new offering to the company’s U.S. portfolio, which features games from the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, as...

Travis Kelce may have big plans beyond his football career, including starring in television shows and movies.
Recently, he commented on swirling rumors and fan theories that he’ll have a role in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix.
The Adam Sandler sequel film was confirmed last month, with much excitement surrounding the project, including potential guest stars in the cast.
While the Kansas City Chiefs star was already successful on the football field with his statistical achievements and Super Bowl rings, he became more of a celebrity due to dating a particular singer.
Travis’s romance with Taylor Swift became highly publicized, not only because of headlines but also because she attended multiple games throughout the season, including the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Travis recently discussed the possibility of his appearance in the movie during his and his brother Jason’s New Heights podcast.

There is a notorious movie principle that says every element of the plot must be there for a reason, while the details that are unnecessary to the plot should be removed. Some films follow this rule in a way they put some hidden easter eggs to call on them in the most important scene to the audience’s excitement.
Here are 5 movies where Chekhov’s guns shot us right in the heart.
1. Shaun of the Dead (2004) - The Gun
Edgar Wright’s zombie comedy is probably the best example of using this technique. Here Chekhov’s gun appears to be a real gun that is hanging on the wall of a local bar. It is introduced in the movie’s beginning and is of much help to the main characters in the climax, as they are trapped in the bar and surrounded by the army of zombies.

Weird sisters have been spinning their witchy webs in stories dating back to Greek mythology, which included a macabre trio of sisters who passed a single eye between them. There is something of that sense of a closed circle of unknowable femininity between the two teenage girls in September Says, the first film to be directed by Greek Weird Wave actor Ariane Labed, based on the 2020 novel Sisters by Daisy Johnson and set between England and Ireland.
July (Mia Tharia) is timid, a new girl at the high school where her sister September (Pascale Kann) already is marked as unruly, aggressive and peculiar, inclined to bullying; she will appoint herself as her sister’s protector. July is relieved to hang back, even when there is a hint that her sister’s control-freakery might include commanding the weather. There is a whiff of the witch about her, too.

Dahomey, a documentary from French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop, has won the Golden Bear for best film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
The multifaceted docu-fictional essay explores the return, in November 2021, of plundered royal treasures of the African Kingdom of Dahomey from Paris to the present-day Republic of Benin, examining the complicated response of those in Benin, whose culture has developed for more than a century without these artifacts.
While taking the stage to accept her award, Diop made a direct political statement, calling out, “I stand with Palestine!”

Like other streamers, Netflix seems eager to get into live sports. But it isn’t quite ready to start paying the massive rights fees that such activity usually requires.
So, the streaming giant intends to launch a “Netflix Cup,” a golf tournament that will pit race-car drivers from its popular Formula 1 documentary series “Drive to Survive” against golfers from a similar effort called “Full Swing.” Both sides will tee up in a match play tournament at Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip. The Usfl and the XFL, two football leagues that were revived in recent years in a bid to bolster the sport during the NFL’s off-season, have decided to merge.
The new entity will “establish best-in-class operations based on the most recent seasons of both league,” the two sports groups said in a terse statement Thursday, noting that more details about the new organization would be released at a later date.
The Usfl is backed by Fox Corp., and its games aired on both Fox entities and NBC, while the XFL was controlled by RedBird Capital and Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia. Its games were shown on platforms backed by Disney.
There’s good reason for interest in more football. It’s the most-watched programming on linear TV and commands the medium’s highest ad prices. TV networks,...

Hope you like fall/winter sports! We finally got some details on Max’s plan to stream live sports. Initial reports of the add-on package being free were correct — but for a limited time only.
The Max Live Bleacher Report (B/R) Sports tier will launch in the U.S. on October 5 and it will be free — for exactly 148 days. (It would be 147 if not for the coming leap year.)
The starting point is timed to give Max subscribers two days to download and install the add-on before Major League Baseball’s National League Division Series begins October 7. The NHL’s regular season begins three days later, and the NBA returns two weeks after that.
Come March 1, 2024, the sports add-on will cost $9.99 per month — just in time for live streams of the Men’s Division I NCAA Basketball Tournament, when March the lamb turns into March the lion. Yes, it’s Madness.

Dhaka, July 22 (Ians) After the Odi series decider between India and Bangladesh ended in a thrilling tie at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur came down heavily on umpiring in the match, calling it “pathetic” while adding that she was “really disappointed” with some decisions.
In India’s chase of 226, Harmanpreet went for a sweep off Nahida Akter in the 34th over. But the Indian skipper missed the delivery and the ball seemingly went to slip off the pads. On Nahida’s appeal, the umpire raised his finger, leaving Harmanpreet furious.
In anger, she hit the stumps with her bat and exchanged a few angry words with the umpire before walking towards the pavilion. On the way, she showed a thumbs up to the crowd when she reached the boundary ropes.
“They (Bangladesh) batted really well, batted according to the situation. They were taking those singles which were very crucial.

Skip Bayless has taken a jab at Charles Barkley after the former NBA star called the Fox Sports analyst an “idiot.” In return, the Undisputed co-host called Barkley a “clown.”
“Still chuckling over a clown calling me an idiot,” Bayless tweeted.
The tweet from Bayless after Barkley’s coverage of The Match earlier this week where Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson faced off Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in a golf competition. Barkley took a swing at Bayless in a nod to Shannon Sharpe leaving the FS1 show and getting a contract buyout from the sports network.
“He’s the best tight end, it’s between him and Gronk as the best ever. And I don’t want to leave out Shannon Sharpe,” Barkley said. “I want one of those jobs where I can get a buyout for working with an idiot.”
Barkley later joked, “What do you think Ernie?...

The weather in Las Vegas on Thursday is scorching, with a high of 102 degrees. It’s the type of weather that would keep most people inside.
But at the Wynn Las Vegas, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports will be live on the golf course for the latest edition of The Match, its celebrity-driven golf franchise. The latest installment features Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce facing off against Golden State Warriors stars Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
The made-for-tv event will see them playing golf, yes, but its also about the banter and trash talking between the players. And for Wbd, it’s about the brand integrations as well.
“Maybe I’ll get a few Coors Lights to kind of calm me down,” Mahomes said during a virtual press conference for the event. The headcovers for Mahomes’ clubs will also bear the Coors Light logo, with the beer...

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 27 (Ians) The Netherlands women clinched the Fih Hockey Pro League title for a third time in four seasons with a fiercely contested 2-1 victory over Germany in Amsterdam.
The win took their points tally to 37 with three games remaining, and out of reach of any of the chasing teams. In the earlier men’s match, the head-to-head battle between Germany and New Zealand ended with a 4-1 scoreline in favour of the world champions. However, that wasn’t entirely reflective of the hard-fought encounter.
(Men’s) New Zealand vs Germany 1-4
It was once again a solid performance from the already-relegated Black Sticks, but one that ultimately yielded no points for the already-relegated side.
The Germans were awarded a penalty stroke within the first three minutes after the ball struck David Brydon’s body in front of goal. Timm Herzbruch made no mistake in firing it into...

With the writers strike sowing doubt about long-term scripted entertainment, and the overall advertising market still in a downturn, Warner Bros. Discovery and other major media companies are now leaning into a form of entertainment that has proven to be resilient: Live sports.
And it is a particularly strong moment for sports at Wbd, which is fresh off the March Madness basketball tournament, at the beginning of the MLB season, and smack in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoffs.
“Our strategy in many ways is very different from other players, right? We’re not into tonnage, we’re really about picking and having the most premium sports out there,” says Luis Silberwasser, the chairman and CEO of Wbd Sports. “Whether it’s on TNT or TBS, or TruTV, it just it creates a cultural moment, right? So when these games are happening on primetime, people come to us.

New Delhi, April 14 (Ians) Defending champion Gujarat Titans secured their third win of the 2023 Ipl as they defeated Punjab Kings by six wickets after successfully chasing down 154 with a ball to spare.

Streaming platforms and a return to physical film markets helped boost exports.
South Korea’s film exports totalled $71.5m in 2022, up 47% year-on-year, according to a report from the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
Sales of completed Korean films made up the majority of this figure at $71.4m, up 66% year-on-year – the second highest record since 2005’s $76m.
The report states that film markets transitioning back to their physical versions helped revive exports as face-to-face meetings became possible again. Global streaming platforms also added to heightened interest in Korean content, which resulted in more favourable conditions.

South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in is being investigated for alleged illegal use of an anesthetic drug and has been banned from overseas travel, local media is reporting. This has led to some speculation regarding the status of his upcoming projects including Netflix drama The Match and the second season of dark fantasy series Hellbound.
Contacted by Deadline, a Netflix spokesperson said, “We have heard from media reports that the investigation is currently underway, and are currently looking into the situation.”
Per The Korea Times, Yoo is suspected of having used propofol, a sleep-inducing drug, for non-medical purposes on a habitual basis, something that constitutes a violation of the Narcotics Control Act. Yonhap reported that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s drug investigation unit questioned the actor on Monday.

Belgium’s Oscar© 2023 Submission for Best International Feature: ‘Close’ by Lukas DhontTipped for a top spot on the Oscar Nominated Best International Feature, ‘Close’, the second feature directed by the young Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont brings the innocence of youth into a confrontation with uneasy societal agreements about what is and what is not acceptable. Young boys are especially sensitive to their peers’ opinions and these two boys, friends forever, are suddenly put into a situation demanding a sense of oneself that they are still too young to have developed fully. When it premiered in Competition at Cannes, it received a 12-minute standing ovation, and shared the festival’s Grand Prix with Claire Denis’ ‘Stars At Noon’.
The intense friendship between two thirteen-year old boys suddenly gets disrupted. Close stars Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele as two thirteen year old boys, Léo and Rémi, whose tender friendship is tragically broken. Struggling to understand what has happened, Léo approaches Sophie, Rémi’s mother. The delicacy with which the two young actors are handled speaks highly of the director Lucas Dhont.
The fragile bud of sexual awakening is a suject explored as well in his previous film, his 2018 debut, about a young transgender dancer. Girl was also handled with such gentle honesty that the subject to reveals itself to our eyes without destroying its integrity. Girl went on to win the Cannes Camera d’Or in Un Certain Regard in 2018. It also won Cannes’ Fipresci Prize and Un Certain Regard’s Best Actor award for Victor Polster as well as the Queer Palm.
Dhont is quoted as saying, “There are definitely echoes of Girl in Close, recurring themes, especially the violence involved in conforming to a certain norm, not being able to be oneself, being subjected to a certain vision of masculinity, and not being able to assert our fragility…I also wanted to talk about brutality. How it can wipe out such fragile, tender things, both in the world but also inside of us; how we cut flowers, how colours disappear, inside of us.” (Cineuropa.org)
Tangential to this blog, but relevent to the 2023 Oscar contenders, this dancer, in Girl, a female, could easily have been the male ballet dancer we meet in the Norwegian Oscar contender War Sailor. I will write more about that other tipped for the top film, but here I want to point out that both ballet dancers are confronted with the ignorance of others and are handled by their respective directors in a fashion that gives us a feeling of completion and satisfaction.
The screenplays for both were cowritten with Angelo Tijssens. “The film says a lot, but in few words; it’s more about gestures, looks and silences.
I find it’s a really complicated thing, writing dialogue! We try just as hard to convey what the character wants to say as what the viewer needs to understand. As a teen, I was pretty good at mime! I copied others’ movements and behaviours. I get a lot of inspiration from dance and the work of choreographers and dancers, who manage to express their emotions through their bodies and their movements. I decided very quickly that this was the language I wanted to use to launch myself into film: body language. Before wanting to become a director, I wanted to be a dancer. I feel like I’m trying to make some of this dancing dream come true through my cinematic language. Expressing what I want to express, without words.” (Cineuropa.org)
The Match Factory previously handled Girl as well as the film Close. During Cannes this year of Close, The Match Factory sold over 100 territories to Close, including North America to A24; Australia/ Nz to Madman; Baltics-a-One; Benelux-Lumiere; Czech Republic and Slovakia-Artcam; Ex-Yugo-mcf; France-Diaphana, Germany and Austria-Pandora; Greece-Ama; Israel-Lev; Italy-Lucky Red and Bim; Netherlands-Cassestte for theatrical, Vedette for TV; Poland-New Horizons; Romania-Bad Unicorn; Scandinavia-Future; So. Korea-Challan; Spain-Vertigo; Switzerland-Filmcoopi; Taiwan-Filmware; Thailand-Sahamangkolfilm; Turkey, UK, Ireland, Latam, Turkey, India-mubi.

Dubai, Sep 5 (Ians) For the second time in seven days, an India-Pakistan match went down the wire in Asia Cup 2022. For the second time in the multi-nation event, the outcome of an India-Pakistan match was decided in the final over.
But this time, the result was in Pakistan’s favour, defeating India by five wickets with a ball to spare in a thrilling Super Four match at the Dubai International Stadium. If it was India, who had aced a chase of 148 in Group A match, it was Pakistan’s turn to chase down 182 in the Super Four match.
Ians has a look at the reasons which played a part in India losing their first match of Asia Cup 2022: –
India’s middle overs wobble with bat
A whirlwind 54-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Kl Rahul, with Virat Kohli looking good, it was the perfect platform for India...

In “The March on Rome,” which world premieres in the Venice Days sidebar of Venice Film Festival Wednesday, Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker Mark Cousins tracks the ascent of fascism in Italy in the 1920s, and its fall-out across 1930s Europe. He also draws a dotted line from those events to the storming of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in January 2021.
The documentary, illustrated with archive footage and Cousins’ characteristic cinematic analysis, starts with Donald Trump defending his decision to retweet a quote from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini: “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” Later in the film, Cousins inserts footage of Trump supporters attacking the Capitol, hoping to overturn Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
The issue of the Mussolini quote made a strong impression on Cousins at the time. “I remember seeing that thing on TV and thinking, ‘Wow, he’s actually not denouncing Mussolini,...
