Marvel Comics is set to celebrate Asian superheroes and creators with the release of the second edition of its “Voices: Identity” one-shot. The radical series aims to highlight the contributions of specific marginalized communities to the Marvel Universe.
This year’s edition marks the second time that Marvel is celebrating the Asian presence in comics, which coincides with the United States’ observation of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May 2022.
The debut of the first “Identity” anthology series was led by Asian artists like current Shang-Chi story writer, Gene Luan Yang, who, together with colourists Marcus To and Sunny Gho, presented an alternate tale of the Master of Kung-Fu encountering a villainous version of himself.

It’s an on and off screen reunion for Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith and their characters when the latter guest stars in the very fun February 27 episode of The Equalizer. The actresses previously worked together in 1996’s Set It Off and 2017’s Girls Trip, while their characters’ past mission teaming up leads to some great banter. In “Legacy,” Robyn McCall turns to Smith’s master thief, Jessie Cook, when she needs help recovering a valuable painting stolen from a Black family during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Here are five things to know about the episode. Jessie’s Unpredictability Makes Her Entertaining … But Not the Best Partner “What’s the point of doing anything if you’re not going to have a little fun along the way?” Jessie asks at one point, and oh, does she have fun. She may be the best at what she does, but “she...

This article contains Fistful of Vengeance spoilers.
“Like the Avengers…but Asian.”
When Tommy (Lawrence Kao) quips this line in a Fistful of Vengeance, it’s almost meta. Fistful of Vengeance is the feature film sequel to Netflix’s 2019 10-episode martial arts driven series Wu Assassins. It is produced in the same spirit as Fox’s Firefly and Serenity or Netflix’s own Sense8 by the Wachowskis (which also had a lot of martial arts.)
Beyond Tommy, two other Wu Assassins leads reappear in Fistful of Vengeance. Indonesian martial arts superstar Iko Uwais reprises his role as Kai Jin, the San Francisco Chinatown chef and last incarnation of the Wu Assassin, an eternal superhero warrior out to save the world. Also there’s Lu (Lewis Tan), a mere mortal like Tommy but with ridiculous Kung Fu skills. Wu Assassins was a martial arts driven show, reminiscent of AMC’s Into the Badlands,...

Newen Studios, the Paris-headquartered production and distribution group, has strengthened its strategic partnership with European producer and financier Anton as it looks to become a major player in the feature film landscape.
As part of the new agreement, Anton is giving Newen Studios a global budget of €50 million ($56.6 million) to co-invest in the distribution rights of audiovisual and film projects. Anton first partnered with Newen Studios in 2019 to co-invest in Newen’s distribution rights for the group’s productions, as well as for third-party programs, across all genres, fiction, documentary, animation.
”The extension of the agreement with Anton testifies to the successful dynamic achieved by Newen Studios,” said Romain Bessi (pictured), Newen Studios managing director, who previously had a long tenure at Canal Plus Group.

“Emergency” starts out fast, loose, and boisterously nasty, with two buddies at the relatively upscale Buchanan University doing that thing that buddies do best: giving each other shit just for being who they are. Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins), in his button-down shirts, with a quick tongue but a tendency to gawk, is a straight-a straight arrow who’s invested in his studies. His parents are doctors (and rather stern African immigrants), and as he works on his senior thesis, which involves bacteria specimens, he’s doing all he can to live up to their highly disciplined dreams for him. He’s a geek, but not a dull grind; he likes to party. He just believes in the future. Sean (Rj Cyler), on the other hand, with his jewelry and sexy hair and homework-what’s-that? glare, believes in the dope he’s smoking and the moment it seals him into. He loves Kunle like a brother,...

Variety cover star Jeymes Samuel could not have been more ready for his big moment. The writer, director, producer and composer was suited and booted as he stepped onto the bright blue carpet for the Los Angeles launch of his wild Western “The Harder They Fall” on Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium.
Since the movie presents a fresh take on the dusty genre, the dress code was super fly. Samuel, stars Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Deon Cole, and the film’s producer Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter went for an “all Black everything” moment, all showing up swagged-out in head to toe onyx. Of course, absolutely everyone in attendance hoped to catch a glimpse of Beyoncé, who’d posted photos glam snaps on Instagram ahead of the screening’s start, teasing photographers and reporters into thinking she could make a red carpet appearance. (Spoiler alert: She did not. But Queen...

When most of us hear the word “animation,” we think of cuddly imagery from Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse cartoons. We generally don’t think about sexual assault, racism and violence.
But the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ core exhibition, “Stories of Cinema,” showcases a more problematic side of animation history. A three-gallery experience titled “Inventing Worlds and Characters” looks back at questionable imagery and tropes. Through these galleries, they are exploring animation, effects and encounters. It both exists as its own genre and encompasses every other genre such as westerns, noir, documentaries, and more. It’s also a craft that encompasses all the other crafts such as production and costume design, editing, etc.
“When you have a completely unlimited craft by the laws of physics, you can have wondrous examples of pure imagination,” says assistant curator Dara Jaffe. “Still, you also get these extremely grotesque depictions that reflect the racism of the current time.

Screen Media announced today the acquisition of all rights to the documentary film Vince Carter: Legacy, which will premiere on the Crackle Plus Networks as an original title in October.
“Air Canada,” “Flying Man” and “Half-Man/Half-Amazing” were just a few nicknames attached to NBA star Vince Carter in his time with the Toronto Raptors, where he won Rookie of the Year honors with his high-flying game. Carter went on to become a Slam-Dunk Contest champion, an eight-time All Star, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the handful of players to score 51 points in a single game. He also may be the only player to ever to dunk on a 7’2″ defender by literally jumping over him.
What might be even more impressive, however, is Carter’s durability. High fly acts generally burn fast and bright, but Carter managed to play an NBA-record 22 seasons and, as his career wound down,...

Under Childhood is a column on children’s cinema—movies about and for kids.Buried beneath Looney Tunes slapstick and Warner Bros. advertisements passed as homage, the main conflict of Space Jam: A New Legacy (between a father and son who don’t share the same dreams) is a formative and necessary one. Space Jam (1996) opens with a reenactment of the 1993 press conference where Jordan announced his retirement from basketball and concludes with his return to the Chicago Bulls. But the more family-oriented Space Jam: A New Legacy is more about LeBron James as a father than as a basketball player. The successes of “King James” (the player’s nickname and Instagram handle) act as the film’s backdrop. The opening credits show James’ rise from a high school superstar growing up in poverty with a single mother to a legendary NBA player. We see his happy family of three...

Amber Heard has weathered the storm of hate and is here to stay as she begins filming for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
“Few actresses have endured relentless online bullying and smear campaigns like Amber Heard. These attacks from a vocal group of staunch Johnny Depp stans have led to a petition (with nearly 2 million signatures) to remove her from Aquaman 2. Luckily, online petitions mean nothing, and Warner Bros. is standing by Heard.”

Is Space Jam: A New Legacy secretly a body horror movie? Not quite, but it certainly alludes to it.
“To categorize Space Jam: A New Legacy as body horror might seem like a stretch, but the unnatural transformation the Looney Tunes undergo after the movie’s villain decides to “upgrade” the 2D cartoon characters into computer-generated 3D creatures is unnerving, to say the least.”

Appropriately, considering one of the key attractions of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are Dorothy’s infamous ruby-red shoes, the museum’s official opening screening September 30 will be The Wizard of Oz accompanied by the American Youth Symphony conducted by David Newman.
But there is much more both before and after the museum’s public unveiling at the end of September. The Academy has unveiled a slew of discussions, programs and 115 screenings over the course of the first three months after the doors open on the Los Angeles venue. Other movie-oriented events will include Oscar Sundays featuring Oscar-honored films, and “Oscar Frights” with movies like Get Out and Psycho. Spike Lee and Denzel Washington will be on hand for a 70Mm screening of Malcolm X. A program of movies featuring women composers is also on tap, and are retrospectives of filmmakers Jane Campion and Satyajit Ray among many others.

Netflix’s one-and-done superhero drama Jupiter’s Legacy topped Nielsen’s U.S. streaming rankings for May 10 to 16.
The show’s eight episodes racked up a bit more than 1 billion total minutes of viewing, easily outpacing Startup, whose three seasons yielded 760 million minutes of viewing.
Nielsen measures only viewing on a TV screen of shows from Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, with nearly a one-month delay by arrangement with the streaming services.
Last week, Deadline exclusively reported that Netflix will turn Mark Millar’s property into a universe spanning an anthology franchise. The streaming giant set a live-action adaptation of Supercrooks, which will explore the story of Millarworld’s super-villains, as the next installment of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga.
Netflix bought Millarworld in 2017 in the company’s first acquisition.
Bringing up the rear on Nielsen’s list, The Woman in the Window drew 500 million minutes of viewing, edging The Mitchells Vs.

Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, the hit musical revue originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Fosse that ran on Broadway from 1978 to 1982, is planning a return: Producer Joey Parnes announced today that he’ll bring a revival, directed by Wayne Cilento, to Broadway in the 2022-23 season.
“Bob Fosse created the original production as a tribute to dance, but we are approaching this production as a celebration of Bob himself – both the person and the artist,” said Cilento, who was featured in the original company. “We plan on delivering a Dancin’ that is every bit as eclectic and uplifting as the original, full of all its inherent edginess, but is also relevant to our current era.

Jupiter's Legacy will not be returning to Netflix for a second season, it has been announced.
Deadline is reporting that the series has been canceled, and the cast has all been released.
The news comes less than a month after the premiere of the opening season of the adaptation of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely's graphic novels.
While Jupiter's Legacy is very much dead, a spinoff titled Supercrooks is in the works.
The series focuses on super villains and will take place in the same universe as the canceled series, so that's a positive, we guess.
Supercrooks centers on a “ragtag gang of super-villains, con-artists, petty thieves and leg-breakers who all band together for the heist of the century and the most outrageous crime story you’ve ever seen in your life," reads the logline.

With Netflix and Millar going in a different creative direction with the IP and the talent options soon expiring, the streamer has opted to let the high-profile cast — led by Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb and Ben Daniels — out of their commitments to the show.
“We’re confident we’ll return to it later,” Millar said of Jupiter’s Legacy, which could come back in a different iteration, sources said.
Netflix has an anime series adaptation of Supercrooks, the superpowered heist comic about eight supervillains written by Millar and drawn by Leinil Francis Yu, which will be released later this year.

Together, they have re-assembled several key cast from “Yanxi Palace” including Qin Lan, Wu Jinyan and Yuan Nie. The series also stars Han Geng (“Ex-Files”), Liu Jun (“All is Well”), Miao Pu (“The Rise of the Tang Empire...

Viewers could be in for a visual treat when two stars like Akshaye Khanna and Raveena Tandon clash as rivals on screen for the first time in Vijay Gutte’s ‘Legacy’.
Being mounted on a monumental scale for a global audience, the exciting drama series would be shot across multiple countries bringing to screen the feud between the characters being portrayed by these two stars.
Directed by Vijay Gutte, known for his critically acclaimed venture ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, ‘Legacy’ marks the filmmaker’s maiden outing on the Ott space, and the director’s second association with Akshaye Khanna.
Talking about the project, Akshaye Khanna shares, “It is refreshing to work on content that challenges our boundaries as an industry as a whole. Given the massive scale of the show, we are cognizant of the immense responsibility to deliver our bests to create a content piece the audience looks forward to.

Rusty Young, the cofounder of Poco and only member to last though its entire five-decade history, died Wednesday at 75 of a heart attack at his Davisville, Missouri home, a representative confirmed.
“I just received word that my friend Rusty Young has passed away and crossed that line into eternity,” cofounder Richie Furay said in a statement. “My heart is saddened; he was a dear and longtime friend who help me pioneer and create a new Southern California musical sound called ‘country rock.’ He was an innovator on the steel guitar and carried the name Poco on for more than 50 years. Our friendship was real and he will be deeply missed. My prayers are with his wife, Mary, and his children Sara and Will.”
Poco and Young continued to tour through March 2020, finally derailed by the pandemic. The group was formed in 1968 by Young and ex-Buffalo Springfield members Furay and Jim Messina.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a beloved character. But the festive funeral in Part 3 of Netflix’s Family Reunion certainly helped soften the blow.
Arguably the most touching of the eight new installments when the sitcom returned Monday, Episode 7 (titled “Remember When the Glass Passed?”) focuses on the sudden and unexpected death of Principal Glass (guest star Mark Curry) and how it impacts each of the McKellan kids.

Resetera, one of the internet’s largest video game forums, banned all promotional material for Avalanche Studios’ upcoming “Hogwarts Legacy” following reports that one of the game’s lead designers previously created YouTube videos praising Gamergate.
Freelance journalist Liam Robertson tweeted screenshots of Avalanche Studios lead designer Troy Leavitt’s YouTube account on February 19 that showcased videos with titles such as “The Injustice of Social Justice,” “In Praise of Cultural Appropriation,” and “In Defense of John Lasseter,” a former Pixar executive who left the company in 2018 following sexual misconduct allegations. Leavitt’s comments on social media, combined with “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans comments on social media, incentivized Resetera to ban all promotinal material regarding the upcoming video game.
“This is the first time we’ve done something like this, and we consider this a very exceptional case,” Hecht, a Resetera administrator, said in a Tuesday statement on the forum.

Queen Latifah’s take on “The Equalizer” landed 20.4 million total viewers immediately following CBS’ Super Bowl Lv. That is 14% smaller than the post-Super Bowl audience for last year’s episode of “The Masked Singer” on Fox.
“The Equalizer,” which started at 10:39 p.m. Et, had a 5.1 rating among adults 18-49.
The 2021 big game itself, a one-sided contest dominated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, drew 96.4 million total viewers across a bunch of platforms. That tally, which fairly or unfairly (in a Covid year) includes out-of-home (Ooh) viewing, was down 15% from 2020’s Super Bowl Liv and is the smallest audience for a Super Bowl since 2007.
Last year’s Super Bowl, which aired on Fox, initially tallied 102 million total viewers across Fox, Fox Deportes and Fox’s, the NFL’s and Verizon’s digital properties. Fox’s broadcast channel hauled in 99.9 million of that 102 million total as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers.

Jared Leto is currently in training to throw on the skintight leotard for next installment Ares, and by the time the movie hits theaters, it’ll mark just the third feature-length outing in a franchise that started almost 40 years ago. The Toon Squad are back for Space Jam: A New Legacy, a sequel to the hit 90s Looney Tunes/basketball mashup that’s been 25 years in the making. De-aging technology has come a long way over the last decade, but it’s still very inconsistent and far from being perfected. Captain Marvel‘s younger Nick Fury was almost flawless and Captain America: Civil War‘s youthful Tony Stark wasn’t bad, but Temuera Morrison looked like a wax model of himself in Aquaman‘s prologue, while Gemini Man‘s Junior was perfectly acceptable until he was required to do anything other than remain perfectly still.
The most egregious example that definitively proved the tech wasn’t ready to become an integral part of blockbuster filmmaking, though, came in Tron: Legacy, where a great deal of the narrative focused on a de-aged Jeff Bridges as the villainous Clu. As a sci-fi epic set in a digital world, you can just about let it slide without having the distracting character ruin your immersion in the movie, but at some points,...

So far, Jared Leto and big budget blockbusters haven’t been a great mix. Suicide Squad was a huge hit financially, but his Joker wasn’t particularly well received, something that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be looking to remedy. He also had a substantial role in Oliver Stone’s box office disaster Alexander and played the villain in critically acclaimed but commercially disappointing Blade Runner 2049, while the jury is still very much out on the Spumc’s Morbius.
The 48 year-old will be remaining in the studio system for at least a little longer, though, after signing on to star in Disney’s latest stab at Tron. The sci-fi franchise is a strange case, one that has a loyal and dedicated fanbase without ever really managing to win over general audiences. When Disney completed their takeover of Fox, they acquired a number of potentially lucrative properties, although many of them sit firmly outside of the company’s family-friendly wheelhouse. After all, while most of the focus was immediately placed on Marvel Studios being handed the rights to the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four, the Mouse House also picked up some huge money-spinning franchises that appeal to more mature audiences, like Alien and Predator.
Of course, Disney Plus has already added the majority of Fox’s superhero blockbusters, but there are still some glaring exceptions, such as Logan. That’s hardly a surprise when the platform isn’t exactly designed for violent and foul-mouthed genre movies, and as you’re surely aware of, there are currently no R-rated titles to be found in the vast content library at all.

That’s hardly a surprise when the platform isn’t exactly designed for violent and foul-mouthed genre movies, and as you’re surely aware of, there are currently no R-rated titles to be found in the vast content library at all.

Movie icon Sean Connery, who died today at the age of 90, is famous for his roles as tough Irish cop Jim Malone in The Untouchables, which earned him an Oscar, and Indy’s wisecracking father Henry Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. But above all, Connery will always be remembered as the original James Bond who helped launch the most successful movie franchise in history, headed into its seventh decade.
Connery starred in seven James Bond films, Dr No (1962), From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Never Say Never Again (1983). Following the news of his passing, the 007 movie franchise’s producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli mourned Connery’s death, joined by current James Bond, Daniel Craig, former Bond Pierce Brosnan and the family of the late 007 star Roger Moore.
“He defined an era and a style,” Craig said of Connery.
