Paris-based sales agent WTFilms, which specializes in genre movies, is presenting Romain Quirot’s sophomore feature film, “Apache: Gang of Paris,” at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris.
The pic is an ambitious revenge movie set in early 20th century Paris, when rival gangs were wreaking havoc. The term apache was coined in Paris at the time, to describe street gangs. “It’s a modern stylish and raw revenge movie,” says WTFilms’ Gregory Chambet. “We hope it will offer a renewal of the French action thriller genre, as Christophe Gans did with ‘Brotherhood of the Wolves’.”
Quirot’s freshman pic, cosmic road movie “The Last Journey,” starring Jean Reno, won Best Film at Sitges in 2020.
WTFilms’ slate also includes Quentin Dupieux’s “Incredible but True,” that follows on from his Venice-playing giant fly comedy, “Mandibles,” that starred French comedy duo Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais.

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis star as female outlaws trapped in a patriarchal world in a film that remains a biting outlier
Thelma & Louise has lost none of its bite, even after 30 years.
When the film was released in 1991, it unleashed a wave of controversy that seemed to take its cast and crew by surprise. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon appeared on the cover of Time magazine, under the coverline “Why Thelma & Louise Strikes A Nerve”; the particular nerve that it struck was much debated. Was it, as some critics felt, a thoughtlessly violent movie that saw two women committing terrible crimes in the name of “empowerment”? Were they “acting like men” under the cover of feminism? Or was it in fact misandry, unfair to men, because it portrayed all of its male characters as awful? (Never mind that they are not all awful; it’s a pre-hashtag #NotAllMen). Were they role models?...

After a six-month shutdown, French cinemas reopened May 19 with a bang.
In spite of an audience capacity of 35% and a 9pm curfew, as many as 305,000 admissions were sold on Wednesday, scoring the best reopening day for cinemas in Europe, according to Comscore France.
“This score is simply exceptional and surpassed our most optimistic expectations,” says Eric Marti at Comscore. The number of admissions sold yesterday is on par with about the same day in May 2019, when “John Wick: Chapter 4” and “Aladdin” had just come out. “But back then, there was no cap on audience capacity, and no curfew,” points out Marti.
Last time they reopened after a long lockdown, in June 2020, French cinemas had Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” to lure people back in. In May 2021, however, there wasn’t a single U.S. blockbuster. Instead, a wide-ranging roster of about 20 films drew huge lines outside cinemas from early morning...
