As my friend Bob George used to say, “You’re getting close.” He’d say it about my personal life and he’d say it on set. He always knew what the missing pieces were and wasn’t afraid to tell me.
I met Bob, who died last week at 51 in a tragic bike accident in Silver Lake, through a friend. It was immediately apparent that we were exact opposites. I felt instantly balanced, just being in the room with him. He was an effortless, kind and gentle soul. An affable, hilarious guy who loved to laugh. I called him the very next day to go for drinks, and it was clear to us both that we liked each other to the point that we wanted to keep each other forever.
He was still a production accountant in 2013 when he expressed an interest in producing, and I thought to myself...

Bob George, who served as a producer on the dramas Newness, Zoe and Endings, Beginnings, died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a bicycle accident in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles.
George was hit by a car immediately after the door of a parked car opened into the bike lane, according to writer-actor Ben York Jones.
Born in Peoria, Illinois, George was a production accountant on Armageddon (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), The Sum of All Fears (2002), three Pirates of the Caribbean films and The Lone Ranger (2013).
“We lost beloved and sweet and virtuous Bob George this week,” wrote York Jones on Instagram. “Bob was a friend and collaborator. He produced Newness and projects that had yet to be realized. His smile was undeniable and his demeanor was reverent. He was quietly kooky and eager to laugh. I loved Bob. He passed suddenly in a bicycle accident on Tuesday. He rode his bike everywhere.

Last July, we heard that production had wrapped on Hunt Club, a thriller starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Maya Stojan (Newness), Will Peltz (13 Minutes), and Jessica Belkin (The Orville). Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Hunt Club has secured a distribution deal with Uncork’d Entertainment – and along with that news comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above.
Directed by Elizabeth Blake-Thomas (The League of Legend Keepers: Shadows) from a script by David Lipper and John F. Saunders, Hunt Club puts its own twist on Richard Connell’s 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game by telling the following story: A group of male hunters routinely lure women to their island with the chance to win 100K in a hunt, only to find that they are the hunted. In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

One reason Jessica Henwick wanted to join Netflix's newest action movie, "The Gray Man," was because of its "stellar lineup of actors," she tells Popsugar. The two people she got to work most closely with on the set of the Russo Brothers' film were Chris Evans and "Bridgerton" breakout Regé-Jean Page. Henwick and Page are both British and play Americans in the film, but they went about preparing for their roles pretty differently.
Page, Henwick says, stayed in an American accent the entire time they were filming. "We got along like a house on fire, and it was only when we finished filming that he broke his American accent, and then I realized our entire relationship was a lie," she jokes. "I never stay in character. As soon as the camera has cut, I'm back to speaking like [with my normal accent], whereas he would maintain it from getting in the car till leaving.

Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan star in the latest film by director Drake Doremus, Endings, Beginnings, which sounds like another bittersweet, aching tale of romance amidst the challenges of life. Doremus' past films, including Zoe (2018), Newness (2017), Equals (2015), Breathe In (2013), and Like Crazy (2011), have often incorporated romance into their stories, though it's never been viewed in a traditional or stereotypical manner. Combined with down-to-earth visuals, they have presented a somewhat gauzy, yet grounded view of life. In Endings, Beginnings, set "in present day Los Angeles," according to the official synopsis, "Daphne (Woodley), a thirty something woman, navigates love and heartbreak over the course of one year. Daphne becomes intertwined with friends Jack (Dornan) and Frank (Stan) after meeting them...

Filmmaker Drake Doremus is making himself a specialist in love-hate relationships, a kind of cinema couples therapist in such films as Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals, and Newness. With his latest film — Endings, Beginnings — Doremus breaks from the couples path to home in on one character. Her name is Daphne, and she’s drifting into her thirties in Los Angeles (the ultimate place to drift) while having a love-hate relationship with herself. Don’t yawn. As played with banked fire by a terrific Shailene Woodley, Daphne earns our rooting interest.

If you love emotional cinema, you should be a fan of filmmaker Drake Doremus, if you aren’t already. From his breakthrough Like Crazy, to other efforts like Breathe In, Equals, Newness, and Zoe, he’s been a storyteller with one of the biggest beating hearts out there. This week, his newest film Endings, Beginnings is opening, and it’s not just one of his best, but one of the top new releases of the year so far. Doremus was kind enough to hop on the phone with me last week for a short chat about his new movie, but also just about his process, which is heavy on improvisation and letting his actors find their characters organically. Below you will find my chat with Drake Doremus, who puts forth some truly moving work with Endings, Beginnings. My rave review is up on the site, as of Monday, and can be found here,...

Early in Drake Doremus’ “Endings, Beginnings,” leading lady Daphne (Shailene Woodley) makes a comment to a potential paramour about feeling as if she’s being called to do things a twenty-something might do, like travel the world or join up with the Peace Corps, youthful diversions that a thirty-something like her has no business dabbling in anymore. But it’s all the other things that Daphne spends the film dabbling in — from living in her put-together sister’s guest house or looking for a job when she has no definable skills or even, as is often the crux of a Doremus feature, engaging in dangerous and immature relationships with unsuitable partners — that make it clear which parts of her are stuck in a life she should have stopped living a decade ago.

Writer/director Drake Doremus debuts his latest picture, “Endings, Beginnings,” at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. The film centers on a young woman (Shailene Woodley) navigating love and heartbreak over the course of one year while confronting the pain of a recent traumatic experience, and finding hope in the most surprising of places.
Your films are driven by the intimacy of the characters. Where did this story derive from?
I want to make stuff that I want to see, and I’m interested in relationships and momentary feelings that people experience. This is my most personal film since “Like Crazy” as I’d just gotten out of a six- year relationship before I started to work on the script. Life very much informs your own work, and you have to be ready to take an introspective look at the truth of your current situation, which can be cathartic.
What will surprise people about this film?...

This is my most personal film since “Like Crazy” as I’d just gotten out of a six- year relationship before I started to work on the script. Life very much informs your own work, and you have to be ready to take an introspective look at the truth of your current situation, which can be cathartic.
What will surprise people about this film?...

Exclusive: I have learned that Daniel Zovatto has been tapped for a lead role in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, a followup to Penny Dreadful from the original series’ creator, writer and executive producer John Logan.
A spiritual descendant of the story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter employ a new vision, new characters and storylines. It opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.

"I wonder all the time if you think about me..." Amazon has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing sci-fi romance film titled Zoe, the latest film from filmmaker Drake Doremus. This is about two people at a research lab who are designing technology to "improve and perfect romantic relationships", but things go even further than they thought possible with a synthetic romance bot. Ewan McGregor stars, with Léa Seydoux playing the titular Zoe, and a cast including Rashida Jones, Theo James, Matthew Gray Gubler, Miranda Otto, Christina Aguilera, and Helen Johns. I really enjoy seeing Doremus play with love and how it all works, exploring it in unique and philosophical ways. He's also great with visuals and intimate shots, but I'm curious if the rest of the film is as good as this looks. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Drake Doremus' Zoe, direct from YouTube: Two...

Following its initial release out of the Tribeca Film Festival, Drake Doremus’ latest film, the artificial intelligence romantic drama, “Zoe,” now has its first trailer. Doremus’ previous film “Newness,” which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, kind of went under the radar and ultimately never found proper domestic theatrical distribution (though one could find it on iTunes).

Drake Doremus has carved out a niche for himself in the indie film community as the director of thoughtful low-budget romances, from “Like Crazy” to “Equals” and “Newness,” and his latest movie, “Zoe,” is firmly in his wheelhouse. The drama combines the futuristic edge of “Equals” with the technology criticisms of “Newness” to tell a science-fiction romance about a man and woman living in an age where synthetic people are the latest scientific breakthrough.
“Zoe” stars Ewan McGregor as an artificial-intelligence engineer whose company offers technology-based romance tools. The company’s first discovery was an algorithm that determines the probability of a relationship succeeding, while their latest project is artificial humans designed to be the perfect soulmate. McGregor’s character develops a romance with an employee played by Léa Seydoux, but their relationship becomes entangled in the company’s scientific products. Theo James and Rashida Jones co-star.

As a kid growing up in America, you tend to learn the layout from one of those maps that isolates the United States from the rest of the world, like it’s the only country on the continent — maybe the only one on the planet. Looking at it that way, without the land being hugged by Quebec on one side and New Brunswick on the other, Maine always seemed like more of a destination than a place where people stayed permanently. It was the summit of a staircase formed by the whole of New England, the tip of a finger that pointed out into the great unknown and away from wherever you happened to live, or wherever you wanted to leave.
It’s a sad and romantic notion, but the characters in Matthew Brown’s (“In the Treetops”) “Maine” are sad and romantic people. In fact, that’s all they...

Not even Christina Aguilera’s cameo as an obsolete robot prostitute can save Drake Doremus’ inanimate story of designer dating,” a high-concept, low-reward romance that hopefully completes the “Like Crazy” filmmaker’s trilogy of lifeless movies about the near future of love.
It began with “Equals,” a moribund Kurt Vonnegut riff about a dystopian society where emotions have been outlawed. It continued with “Newness,” a banal vivisection of relationships in the age of Tinder. Now this informal triptych bottoms out with “Zoe,” a humorless (and characteristically half-baked) glimpse at a tomorrow in which singles are matched together by algorithms, and the tech community has started creating androids — Synthetics — to satisfy people who would rather build their ideal partner from scratch.

“Zoe,” a chilly but soft-headed do-androids-dream-of-electric-love? sci-fi romance, is one of those movies in which the future is depicted as being a heartbeat away from the present, a scheme that serves two neatly interlocking purposes. It allows an ambitious indie filmmaker — in this case, Drake Doremus — to make a science-fiction fantasy on a relatively low budget. It also allows him to make an atmospheric statement about how the technological fetishism of today is fast becoming the only reality of tomorrow.
In “Zoe,” love is something that people still pine for, but it’s been quantified, codified, systematized. Every one of your deepest yearnings is on-line. (Sound familiar?) The film centers on a company called Relationist, which interviews people by computer to match them up with ideally fitting partners (lady-robot voice to prospective couple: “Your chances for a successful relationship are 75 percent. Congratulations!”). The company also markets a drug that simulates feelings of romantic euphoria.

“More than ever, I genuinely feel like the things that are f*cked up and flawed about human beings are the most important things about a relationship, and finding peace in those things,” director Drake Doremus told Deadline in Tribeca today. “I think the idea that you can engineer something to be perfect for you is kind of ridiculous, in a lot of ways.”
Appearing with actors Ewan McGregor and Léa Seydoux, the director behind such films as Like Crazy and Newness was in town to discuss his Tribeca-premiering sci-fi romance, Zoe. Contemplating the influence of technology upon romantic relationships, Doremus’ second sci-fi-tinged feature follows two colleagues at a revolutionary research lab, in the process of designing technology to improve—and maybe even “perfect”—romantic relationships. As their work progresses and their relationship deepens, the two begin to question their assumptions about life and love.

I spent my teenage years in the 1990s and when I look back at that time, I loved it! I have so many great memories, but at the same time, it was awkward as hell! FilmNation Entertainment’s Ben Browning, Brenda Vogel and Glen Basner will executive produce with Doremus. Libaire is co-executive producer.
