Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 8, episodes 11 and 12, of “The Masked Singer,” “Two-Hour Epic Finale,” which aired Nov. 30 on Fox.
“The Masked Singer” ended its eighth season on a “Glee”-ful note. Singer and actor Amber Riley, known for playing Mercedes Jones on Fox’s “Glee” and more recently for projects including “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Lifetime’s “Single Black Female,” was revealed as this season’s winner on the Wednesday night finale.
Riley was unmasked as the Harp, beating out the Lambs — who were unmasked as 90s vocal group Wilson Phillips.
“It’s very validating as an artist,” Riley tells Variety about her win. “It can get very discouraging in this industry, especially as a music artist. I’m pretty much a new artist, even though I’ve been in this industry a really long time… to hear all the amazing...

There will be some changes when Season 8 of Fox’s The Masked Singer premieres later this month.
Under the new format announced today by the network, each episode of the celebrity singing contest will feature the usual knock-out performances by elaborately disguised celebrities, but for the first time, only one contestant will move on from each episode. The studio audience will vote for their favorite, and the singer with the least amount of votes will unmask mid-show. That celebrity will get a front row seat in the Masked Singer VIP section to watch the rest of the competition and the second unmasking, and for the first time, won’t have to to wait to find out what celebrity they were competing against.

“The Masked Singer” is changing things up for Season 8. The Fox competition series will have a new format, and only one contestant is going to make it through each episode.
As we know, each episode generally features performances from several of the masked celebrities. This season, only one will move on at the end of the episode (as opposed to only one being eliminated in years past).
In order to add a second elimination, an audience voting element is also being introduced. Halfway through the show, the studio audience will vote for their favorite performance so far, and the contestant with the least amount of votes will be sent home. But, they’ll get to stick around to watch the rest of the competition — and even the second unmasking!

When Drake stepped onstage to give his acceptance speech for the BMI Songwriter of the Year Award in 2011, one of the names he shouted out — along with his mom, Kanye West, and Andre 3000 — belonged to Phonte. NBC’s Thanksgiving NFL game that saw the surging New Orleans Saints handle their rivals the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football was easily night’s top-rated and most-watched program, capping a holiday schedule the network kicked off with coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The Saints’ 26-18 victory scored a 5.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 18.17 million viewers in fast-affiliate Nielsen ratings, making it the most-watched primetime Thursday program since NBC’s NFL season kickoff September 5.
Most of the rest of the primetime lineup punted with repeats Thursday night, though ABC’s fresh The Wonderful World of Disney Presents: Magical Holiday Celebration ticked up a notch from last year’s special.
CBS aired all repeats, with Young Sheldon currently topping the night among scripted shows thanks to NFL overrun from the network’s afternoon Dallas-Buffalo game. Fox was the only other network with...

On the surface, a film hyped as a “black ‘Bonnie and Clyde'” written and directed by first-time feature filmmakers, might be considered a less attractive risk to financiers and distributors, especially at the studio level, even in today’s climate of content excess to meet growing demand.
But for writer Lena Waithe and director Melina Matsoukas, who are also producers on the project, the process of packaging “Queen & Slim” was more seamless than usual.
“We didn’t have to chase anyone because they chased us,” Waithe said of the project. Brad Weston’s Makeready studios won an auction to finance the movie in mid-2018, with Universal Pictures handling marketing and distribution under its existing deal with Weston’s company. “We would walk into meetings, and they would say, ‘Here are all the reasons why you should come to us,'” Waithe said. “It was crazy! On Tuesday, the 45-year-old actress showed up to a screening of her upcoming movie, The Tribes Of Palos Verdes, and opted for a black slip dress by The Row and classic Manolo Blahnik heels.
Keeping the style as simple as possible, Garner paired the dress with a dainty necklace. The mother of three was joined at the screening by J.J. Abrams -- who created Garner's wildly popular series, Alias -- and the film's director Brendon Malloy, who were both dressed in a casual fashion.

The biggest shock to come from this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” is that Chance The Rapper can apparently exist without his signature hat. He might even thrive without it, which is a fascinating reality to accept. The point is, with or without the hat, Chance The Rapper hosts the best episode of this season so far, the first one to maintain a consistently good quality from top to bottom as well as successfully use the host to their strengths. In fact, Chance The Rapper showed signs in this episode of being the next Justin Timberlake for “Saturday Night Live” in terms of his versatility, gameness, and general sense of humor as a host.
The second biggest shock is that, despite the opening monologue, the “Family Feud” sketch, and some Weekend Update, this year’s Thanksgiving episode is not tied down to the concept of being a Thanksgiving episode.

Another turn of the calendar means another flood of new things to be aware of. Sure, Netflix has an entire slate of fresh programming all to themselves, but even that’s just the tip of the TV iceberg. The fall TV season might be winding down before a massive Thanksgiving reboot, but there are plenty of premieres still left before we get too deep into the end of the year chatter. So warm up your (probably already overheated, actually) DVRs, fill out your mental calendars, and skim through some of the best new shows the month has to offer. Chris here. Remember a few short years ago when Gary Oldman, after decades of brilliance, was finally an Oscar nominee for Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy? Well, it looks like he could be prepping another go of awards season, but this time it might be for a performance that finds the actor on the unrecognizable side of his chameleonic abilities. The last time he had this level of makeup on we got his delicious and underrated Dracula, but now Oldman is donning some impressive prosthetics to play Winston Churchill in Joe Wright's period piece Darkest Hour.
Though Joe Wright's previous period work like Atonement and Anna Karenina have sparked with some inventive presentation, for the trailer this looks like a little bit more of the familiar. No matter, considering Oldman is firing on all cylinders for some juicy dramatics as the Prime Minister - the actor is definitely the show here.

Chris here. You may think it's a little early to start prepping for fall film festival season, but New York Film Festival wants to prove you wrong. The festival just announced its opening film and it's one we've heard surprisingly little about: Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying.
The film will be a spiritual sequel of sorts to Hal Ashby's The Last Detail, with Bryan Cranston taking over Jack Nicholson's reins. Cranston stars with Laurence Fishburne and Steve Carell, and the men head off on a coastal road trip after Carell's son dies while serving overseas in Iraq. If this sounds on the treacly side, we can count on Linklater to give it some verve. Plus if Nyff has the confidence in the film to announce its major placement several months away, the Texan filmmaker could have something special coming our way.

Luke Bryan‘s infant niece, Sadie Brett Boyer, died Tuesday, a rep for the singer confirms to People. The infant girl was the daughter of Bo and Ellen Boyer, on Bryan’s wife Caroline’s side of the family.

Actress, author and comedian Amy Sedaris is heading to TruTV with a new half-hour comedy series. Ahead of the network’s Television Critics Association panel, TruTV has ordered a 10-episode first season of an Untitled Amy Sedaris Project.
The scripted series is created by and will star Sedaris, and follow her as she applies “her sincere yet distinctive brand of silliness to create a rich world that showcases her diverse – but necessary – homemaking skills.”
“I’ve been doing this show in my head for years. It will be terrific to get it on TV so I can free up some wiggle room up in my skull,” Sedaris said in a statement.

It’s a great pitch: A comedy about bulimia. It sells itself. So well, in fact, that more than one person had the idea. “When I saw ‘The Skinny,’ I had a meltdown,” Angela Gulner, creator and star of “Binge,” told IndieWire. “I was like: ‘My story has been told. There’s no room for it anymore.’ But then I calmed down a little bit.”
Read More: How ‘The Skinny’ Creator Jessie Kahnweiler Got From YouTube to Sundance (Hint: Jill Soloway Helped)
She realized that there was room for more than one eating disorder comedy. The success of Jessie Kahnweiler’s “The Skinny” (the web series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was co-produced by Jill Soloway) did not mean the failure of “Binge.” Quite the opposite — it meant there was an audience for her story.
Not only that, but such a universal and pressing issue deserves more than one story.

In “Love Reset,” the final winner of MTV’s “Look Different” campaign, a white teenage boy sees life as a video game, tallying his masculinity points, while ignoring the Indian girl who passes him, ticking off boxes on an impossible imaginary to do list. Both metaphors are apt, speaking volumes about their subjects’ vastly different daily experiences and forcing the viewer to confront the discomfort of both.
“Look Different” is MTV’s anti-bias campaign and filmmaking competition that invited emerging filmmakers to create short films on the topic of privilege – including racial, gender and sexual orientation. Three projects were chosen: “American Male,” about a closeted gay man and the pressures of masculinity, “See Me In My Black Skin,” about a white guy who dons black face for a party and wakes up black, and “Love Reset,” which premieres exclusively on IndieWire.

Since it's Thanksgiving weekend and your presumably still digesting all that pie, let's stay reflective about gratitude, cinematic and otherwise. You've already heard from positivity-spreading volunteers among our team (Manuel, Jose, Daniel, Murtada, and Chris) so now it's my turn. I shall try very hard to come up with a few new things for which to be thankful since they stole so many of my items!
Here are 16 things I am deeply grateful for in defiance of how awful 2016 was trying to be to all of us...
- The way Meryl Streep's eyes dart around desperately for validation during her wobbly notes in Florence Foster Jenkins. Girl, I feel you. Same.
- Brave endings that really land through force of vision and artistry from The Fits to The Witch through The Lobster and La La Land...

Greetings from Chris, lovely readers! This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for our faithful readers, our feisty team, and our relentlessly kind and passionate leader Nathaniel. In my estimation, this has been a great enough year to just be thankful for such a bevy of riches - but here's a few of the things earning my gratitude:
... the many unsung ensembles hosting their own feasts but especially Don't Think Twice, Little Men, and Love and Friendship.
... André Holland smoking in Moonlight. It's the hottest sex scene of the year and it's between camera and actor. May we all find someone that looks at us the way that the camera looks at Holland...

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Political dynasties may find no love from Americans these days, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love our comedy dynasties. Fans of David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris will agree a little nepotism isn’t always a bad thing, as well as those who ate crow when Abby Elliott proved herself worthy of the strings (real or rumored) pulled by her father, “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Elliott, to get her an audition for the show that started his career. Now, two great comedic families finally join forces as Amy Sedaris and Chris Elliott play the world’s worst parents in “Thanksgiving,” a loopy family comedy that — like its target audience — could use an Adderall.

At the time of this post, Thanksgiving is just eight days away, and Verizon and Hearst’s Seriously.TV venture is getting into the holiday spirit with a new web series. It’s called Thanksgiving, it follows the members of a dysfunctional family across a single Turkey Day, and it’s now available through Verizon’s Go90 platform.
Thanksgiving is the creation of Bethany Hall (who was a regular on the cult-favorite public-access TV series The Chris Gethard Show) and Daniel Powell (the co-creator of Inside Amy Schumer). To inject some star power into their show, Hall and Powell assembled a top-notch cast. The members of the Morgan and Tuniclif families include Bridey Elliott (who we’ve seen in several web series over the past few years), her real-life father Chris (who is an actor in his own right), and the always-exciting Amy Sedaris.
As with the other comedy shows produced under the Seriously.

“Billy on the Street” is TV’s adrenaline shot. Whether the hijinks come from the show’s growing list of guest stars or the flabbergasted hoards of New Yorkers who become putty in the hands of a raving, microphone-wielding Billy Eichner, it’s a tried-and-true formula that’s birthed four full seasons of Manhattan-set surprises. The kinetic, chaotic game show hasn’t yielded any giant cash prizes or faraway vacations, but every episode turns a few random city folks into potential viral superstars.
