There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

Ava DuVernay is reuniting with “When They See Us” composer Kris Bowers for the documentary short “A Concerto Is a Conversation.”
DuVernay will executive produce the film, which was co-directed and produced by Bowers and Ben Proudfoot. “A Concerto Is a Conversation” was selected to premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, which has shifted to a virtual model amid the ongoing pandemic. The 13-minute short, positioned to be an early Oscar contender, will begin screening at the fest on Jan. 28.
The film is currently streaming exclusively at NYTimes.com, as part of the New York Times Op-Docs series. It centers on the relationship between Bowers and his 91-year-old grandfather Horace Bowers Sr., as the virtuoso jazz pianist traces his family’s lineage. The film’s title refers both to the way Kris describes the term “concerto” to his grandfather as a conversation between orchestra and soloist, but also the back...

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (December 14) is the wild card in the animated Oscar race. It not only introduces Miles Morales as the alternative Spidey, the Afro-Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn, but also boldly breaks the rules of animation as a moving comic book splattered with graffiti. Yet, given what Phil Lord and Chris Miller already accomplished with “The Lego Movie,” this was the logical next step.
“Miles is one of the most popular characters, if not the most popular character, to be introduced in the last 10 years or so,” said Lord, who shares script credit with Rodney Rothman (“22 Jump Street”). “The thing that [‘Miles Morales’ co-creator] Brian Bendis did was to help us imagine that it could be a completely different kind of person under that mask. And yet a person that embodied the heart of what Steve Ditko and Stan Lee started with: an unexpected hero who feels too young and too unqualified,...

The Society of Composers and Lyricists hosted a panel discussion at La’s Landmark Regent Theater on Feb. 6 to showcase Daytime Emmy Awards hopefuls who write music for children’s animated programs. The four composers taking part were Grammy-winner Lisa Loeb (“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”), Jim Lang (“Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie” and “Ready Jet Go!”), Lisbeth Scott (“Tumble Leaf”) and Jake Monaco (“The Stinky and Dirty Show” and “Dinotrux”). Also adding insight was Emmy-winning music supervisor Rossanna Wright (“The Stinky and Dirty Show” and “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”).
“An important thing to remember is kids hold onto these songs for life,” said Wright, a Daytime Emmy winner for her work on “The Snowy Day” (Best Music Direction and Composition in 2017). When asked during the audience Q&A for advice to aspiring composers and songwriters she encouraged the tunesmiths to “watch the show that you want to work in.
