Netflix’s new Indonesian crime thriller saw the streamer reteam with Timo Tjahjanto for the fourth time, and it was a hit. Their latest collaboration is already the biggest so far, translating to viewership. The director has long teased plans for a sequel, but it looks like those plans are now a reality, with Tjahjanto posting on social media in recent days that a sequel is in the works.
The project marked Netflix’s fourth major collaboration with Tjahjanto, following May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, and The Big 4. It first premiered at TIFF before hitting Netflix globally on October 17th. The film tells the story of a young assassin who defies her mentor to save (and murder anyone in her path) a boy from a ruthless crime syndicate. Aurora Ribero, Hana Malasan, Kristo Immanuel, and Andri Mashadi lead the cast.

Jason Statham has been an icon for the action genre for decades now. While his most formative films were in the early 2000s, his fans have been waiting for something significant for years now. While Wrath of Man did come close, it did not possess the same essence that made his films so enjoyable.

This pattern persisted until The Beekeeper buzzed into the picture. The film easily entered the same category as classics like The Transporter yet stood out in the best ways possible. Having been directed by the creator of 2016’s Suicide Squad, it is not surprising that the film’s fast-paced action has led it on the path of a sequel.
However, it would seem that David Ayer has been replaced with another director, and the decision could make the series a lot more bloody.

Buzz buzz: Our prayers have been answered, because the only two movies that actually deserve to become franchises are now getting sequels. First there was the announcement last year that Russell Crowe would return to ride his little scooter in a sequel to "The Pope's Exorcist," and now, Jason Statham is getting the beehive back together in a sequel to his best action movie in years.
That's right, "The Beekeeper" will ride again, with Deadline reporting that Statham is returning to star in a sequel to his only 2024 action film, which was a box office and streaming hit. Not only that, but "The Beekeeper 2" will be directed by none other than Indonesian director and guys-beating-the-everloving-gory-s***-out-of-each-other enthusiast Timo Tjahjanto.
The original "The Beekeeper" was directed by David Ayer and starred Statham as an ordinary beekeeper who is also a former assassin who worked for a secret organization known as The Beekeepers.

Fresh off of directing the Bob Odenkirk action sequel Nobody 2 (which is now in post-production) for Universal, Timo Tjahjanto has signed on to direct the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2 for Miramax! Deadline reports that filming on the Statham movie is expected to begin this fall.
Directed by David Ayer from a screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper was a surprisingly good action flick that showed us what happens when one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” As Deadline reminds us, it was about Adam Clay, a retired clandestine human intelligence operative who sets out for revenge after his kind-hearted landlady becomes the victim of a phishing scam that steals millions of dollars from a charity she runs. Miramax and The Meg action hero Jason Statham are officially reteaming on the action sequel The Beekeeper 2. What’s more exciting is that, per Deadline, The Shadow Strays and Nobody 2 filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has been set to direct.
Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the first film, is back to pen the screenplay. Production is set to begin this fall.
No sequel plot details as of yet, but The Beekeeper followed “a retired clandestine human intelligence operative who sets out for revenge after his kind-hearted landlady becomes the victim of a phishing scam that steals millions of dollars from a charity she runs.”
The first film became a $152.7M global hit when released in theaters last January. David Ayer (Suicide Squad) helmed the 2024 release, and the studio aims to bring the filmmaker back for the sequel in producing capacity.

The buzz continues for the beekeeper — with Jason Statham returning to star in “The Beekeeper 2.”
The Miramax movie is set to start production in the fall, with “Nobody 2” director Timo Tjahjanto taking the reins from David Ayer, who helmed the first kooky conspiracy thriller, which debuted last January and grossed $152 million worldwide.
Statham stars as Adam Clay, a retired government assassin (a former “Beekeeper” operative turned actual honeycomb minder) who gets back in the game after a phishing attack targets the kindly old woman (Phylicia Rashad) from whom he rents a barn, stealing millions of dollars from a charity she runs. As Clay goes berserker mode in his quest for vengeance, the film turns into the kind of actioner audiences expect from Statham — with his gruff, baldheaded vigilante leaving a bloody trail in his wake, but ultimately beating the bad guys.

The Raid star Iko Uwais is moving up from action star to director, as well as from director to studio head in one swift movement (not unlike his martial arts moves). The Indonesian martial arts star, whose style is a form called Silat, was recently seen in films like Expend4bles and will be in the upcoming Skyline: Warpath, with fellow action star Scott Adkins. Additionally, Uwais can be seen in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which stars Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul, and it is due to release in March for a short theatrical release before streaming on Shudder.
Deadline has now reported that Uwais is unveiling the start of his own production company — Uwais Pictures. The launch of his production company will be emphasizing action films for its slate and the studio is already hitting the ground running with two movies ready for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.

Exclusive: International action star Iko Uwais, known for The Raid, Expendables and Skyline franchises, is officially launching his production label Uwais Pictures with two new films on sale at next month’s EFM in Berlin.
The action-focused production company he runs with his team of collaborators is expanding its remit to the global market. The aim is to replicate the success of modestly budgeted, local-language hits such as The Raid, The Raid: Redemption, and The Night Comes for Us.
First up on the slate are two completed action films: Timur, which is inspired by the 1996 Mapenduma hostage crisis, and Ikatan Darah. Both will be screened at the EFM by Uwais Pictures in collaboration with Gersh.
Indonesia-based action outfit Uwais Pictures specializes in incorporating fight choreography, action design, and stunt performance from the inception of its projects. Uwais and his team of collaborators have worked together for a number of years.

The action genre is known for its intense fight sequences and bloody violence, but this isn't the only reason to recommend these movies. Many underrated action films that fewer audiences are aware of incorporate fast-paced action choreography and incredible stunts that hold viewers' attention while adding innovative storytelling techniques and emotional journeys for the characters. While high-octane action movies typically do well at the box office even if the reviews aren't as strong, there are rare cases when critics adore action films, and they don't reach the widest possible audience.
While critical and audience opinions can be very different, these films are favorites among reviewers for a reason. These projects don't skimp on violence but understand how to balance gore with intricate storytelling. There were many underrated action movies in 2024 that audiences will have a chance to revisit as they get added to streaming services. However, it's not just recent...

You are sorely mistaken if you thought Hutch Mansell had little gas in the tank after the events of 2021’s Nobody. Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell in a bloody first-look at Nobody 2. Odenkirk made his action hero debut in 2021's Nobody, which follows Hutch, a seemingly ordinary family man, as skills from his past as a government assassin resurface after a home invasion. The film was a hit, and Nobody 2 was confirmed, with Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes For Us) set to direct. The sequel brings several familiar faces back from the original movie, including Christopher Lloyd as David Mansell and Connie Nielsen as Becca Mansell, with Sharon Stone joining the cast as a villain.

Few would have pegged Bob Odenkirk as a burgeoning action behemoth before Nobody. But that film – in which Odenkirk’s seemingly ordinary suburban dad Hutch got back in touch with the inner assassin he’d long buried – proved that the man formerly known as Saul Goodman is very much a Somebody in the beat-‘em-up stakes. Now, he’s about to unleashed again in Nobody 2, with The Night Comes For Us director Timo Tjahjanto taking the reins. Make no mistake – it’s going to get messy.
While Nobody saw Hutch gradually unpack more and more layers of his ultra-violent past across the runtime, there’s no putting that back in the box in Nobody 2. “Now that he’s back at it in full throttle, how does his family react to this beast?” teases Tjahjanto of what Hutch is facing this time around. “You’ll see a lot of...

Nowadays, when one wants to find non-pc, unapologetically fun, ultra violent movies, Indonesia is definitely the place to look. More specifically, Timo Tjahjanto is the one to look for, with films like “The Night Comes For Us” (2018) still echoing quite loud to fans of the category. “The Shadow Strays” is a more than worthy continuation of the aforementioned and definitely bigger in scope.

Indonesian action flick The Shadow Strays follows a pretty simplistic premise involving a global assassin syndicate, an amnesiac killer on the road to redemption, a bloody quest for vengeance, and cathartic reconciliation—every major action movie trope you are probably all too familiar by now. But you don’t invest your time in movies like The Shadow Strays for the plot; you do so to get a taste of masterful fight choreography, innovative action sequences, brilliant cinematography, and a violent, blood-soaked, adrenaline-pumping roller-coaster of a ride that leaves you breathless throughout the movie’s runtime. If the Raid movie series is your jam, then you are already familiar with Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto’s gory feature The Night Comes for Us, who amps up the scope of violence even further with his latest feature, The Shadow Strays.

If nothing else, a Timo Tjahjanto movie is guaranteed to blow your hair back. That’s the only phrase that evokes the feeling of being pinned to your seat by the hurricane-like force of the Indonesian filmmaker's action scenes, which hit hard and kick harder in bone-shattering displays of hyper-kinetic ultraviolence.

No one is doing it like Timo Tjahjanto. The Indonesian filmmaker creates movies that make you say "Hell yeah," and his latest digital blood-drenched opus, "The Shadow Strays," seems designed to both excite and exhaust the viewer. It's loaded with killer, ultra-violent action scenes that just keep going, and going, and going, to the point where everything starts to get bogged down. That's not to say the film isn't a hell of a lot of fun — action fans will get what they want here. Still, "The Shadow Strays" is a step-down from Tjahjanto's fantastic "The Night Comes For Us," perhaps because the director seems to be trying to create an entire franchise full of world-building instead of just focusing on the moment. "The Night Comes For Us," one of the best action movies ever made, was perfectly self-contained and focused. In sharp contrast, "The Shadow Strays" keeps introducing new elements...

Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. In my opinion, that's part of the fun. An anthology film gives me the chance to micro-dose an experience of a time gone by, where I'd agonize over VHS box cover art in the hopes that whatever I brought home would become my new favorite movie. If it didn't, that's okay, because I could just move on to the next one. The "V/H/S" films capture that experience, and every so often, a segment transcends its place within the anthology and becomes something singular. There are plenty of "V/H/S" segments that I adore and can watch on repeat without ever tiring, but there will always only be one "Safe Haven.

"We are here to neutralize, not to help or negotiate." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for The Shadow Strays, the latest action film from Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto. It just premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival in Midnight Madness and will be streaming on Netflix on October 17th this month. Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin, is suspended due to a sloppy mission in Japan. But she meets 11-year-old Monji, who loses his mother, and decides to save him. Aurora Ribero stars as 13 – an assassin determined to rescue a child from a crime syndicate, even if it means going against her own mentor. "Not since The Night Comes for Us has Indonesia's preeminent architect of ultra-violent action, Timo Tjahjanto, conducted such a meticulous martial arts massacre. Opening with a bravura set piece laying waste to dozens of yakuza, his latest proceeds as a kind of taxonomy of the action genre...

What’s a disgraced female assassin eager to save a young boy to do? Fight everyone in her way, of course. That’s the set up for Timo Tjahjanto‘s latest action flick, “The Shadow Strays.” Fresh off its world premiere in TIFF‘s Midnight Madness section, the Indonesian genre director’s new film premieres on Netflix later this month. Where will it ranks Tjahjanto’s other Netflix offerings like 2022’s “The Big 4” and 2018’s “The Night Comes For Us“?

The return of a reality TV monster that’s sure to dominate social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; the latest gem from an action auteur; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another helping espionage and drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in October.
Coming in hot on Oct. 2 is the new season of Netflix’s reality dating show Love Is Blind. The seventh go around for the main franchise — the brand has now expanded into several country-specific versions — will see a fresh batch of singles heading into the pods, hoping to find love and marry their match, all within a worryingly compressed timeline. Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge dominated Netflix’s Top 10 list for the second week this week and it has gained acclaim with a certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96% with an audience score of 69%. Our own Chris Bumbray says in his review, “But what makes Rebel Ridge such a must-watch movie are the action sequences, which are shot in a lean, mean, and realistic way. You see, in the film, Terry is a former close combat instructor, and those are the tactics he uses to take on his opponents, with Pierre thrillingly adept in the well-staged martial arts sequences. This kind of action role makes a guy like him a star, and one has to imagine that the suits at Marvel and DC will be keeping an eye on him.” The fights scenes are a standout for the film and one person who has ample experience with hardcore fighting is director Timo Tjahjanto.

Writer/Director Timo Tjahjanto approaches his action features the same way he does horror: full throttle. There’s no coming up for air in a Tjahjanto joint; the filmmaker goes for the jugular and immerses audiences in a violent sensory assault. So much so that it’s difficult not to see the overlap between genres. That’s certainly the case in The Shadow Strays, an actioner so propulsive in its ultraviolence that its constant barrage of carnage holds you firm in its grip and all but begs to be seen with the rowdiest crowd possible.
The Shadow Strays gets the pulse-pounding straight away, with an intense assassination attempt in Japan that leaves a pile of bodies on the floor and a thrilling amount of arterial spray. It also ends in failure for the assassin-in-training at the center of the carnage, a 17-year-old with the codename 13 (Aurora Ribero). 13’s mission failure gets her suspended,...

Nobody 2 is now reloaded, cocked and shooting under the direction of Timo Tjahjanto, who is stepping in for the first film’s director, Ilya Naishuller. Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell, the mild-manner family man who keeps his past as a government assassin under wraps. Connie Nielsen is also returning as Hutch’s wife, Becca, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s father, a retired FBI agent. It was also announced a couple of months ago that Sharon Stone would be playing the main villain of the sequel.
Tjahjanto’s previous credits include May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, May the Devil Take You Too, The Big 4, and segments of the anthologies The ABCs of Death, V/H/S/2, Portals, and V/H/S/94. An unrepentant maximalist whose genre movies are defined by the mad gluttony of someone born to leave it all on screen, Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto is nothing if not easy to root for. There’s something indivisibly pure and precious about a guy who doesn’t know the meaning of the words “too much;” whose horror stuff (especially the “Safe Haven” short he contributed to “V/H/S/2”) goes so far beyond the pale that it makes a delicious meal out of its own bad taste, and whose orgiastic action fare is so hyper-violent that it makes you wonder if it’s possible to run out of CGI blood.
Alas, that muchness — beautiful as it might be in theory — is also something of a double-edged sword, and Tjahjanto still isn’t precise enough to use it without disfiguring his own vision in the process. Which is to say that, like “The Night Comes for Us” before it,...

Back in 2021, actor/comedian Bob Odenkirk – who is best known for playing the role of con artist turned lawyer Saul Goodman on the TV series on Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul – made the unexpected move of playing a retired government assassin in the action thriller Nobody. Doing the unexpected worked out, as Nobody was a success, making $57.5 million at the box office on a budget of $16 million. That was enough to get a sequel greenlit – and now that production has started on that sequel, we figured this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About Nobody 2!

Great Scott! With every new bit of Nobody 2 news, things just keep looking better and better for Universal and 87North's upcoming action thriller. Just last week, we shared the exciting announcement that Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone is set to play the lead villain in Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto's (The Night Comes For Us) eagerly anticipated sequel. And before that, we got confirmation that Bob Odenkirk is getting ready to rock and roll once again as assassin-turned-family-man-turned-assassin-again Hutch Mansell in the geriaction flick follow-up. Now, per Deadline's reporting, we know that Back To The Future legend Christopher Lloyd will be back as Hutch's shotgun-toting, retired FBI agent father David Mansell in the latest Nobody joint.
Hot on the heels of scoring an Emmy nomination for his role as Larry Arbuckle in Prime Video dramedy Hacks, Lloyd isn't the only Mansell family member confirmed to be returning in Deadline's report either.

Timo Tjahjanto, director of Nobody 2, is known for his brutal and bloody action thrillers. The Night Comes for Us features intense fight scenes and a surprisingly emotional father-daughter dynamic. Nobody 2, with Bob Odenkirk, promises to deliver action-packed thrills and emotional depth.
Before Timo Tjahjanto directs Bob Odenkirk in the highly anticipated Nobody 2, its the perfect time to check out the filmmakers criminally underrated action thriller on Netflix. With Better Call Sauls Odenkirk in the lead role, playing a seemingly ordinary suburban family guy who turns out to have a dark history of government wetwork, Nobody offered a fresh perspective on the action genre. A sequel to Nobody has been in the works since it arrived as a sleeper hit in 2021. Despite being released at the tail end of the pandemic, it made a minor splash at the box office.
In the past few months, work on Nobody 2 has finally gotten underway.

Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, and Aleksey Serebryakov also star in Nobody, though it’s undetermined if Nielsen or Lloyd will return for the sequel. However, considering how Nobody ended, I’d...
