Netflix’s new Indonesian crime thriller saw the streamer reteam with Timo Tjahjanto for the fourth time, and it was a hit. Their latest collaboration is already the biggest so far, translating to viewership. The director has long teased plans for a sequel, but it looks like those plans are now a reality, with Tjahjanto posting on social media in recent days that a sequel is in the works.

The project marked Netflix’s fourth major collaboration with Tjahjanto, following May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, and The Big 4. It first premiered at TIFF before hitting Netflix globally on October 17th. The film tells the story of a young assassin who defies her mentor to save (and murder anyone in her path) a boy from a ruthless crime syndicate. Aurora Ribero, Hana Malasan, Kristo Immanuel, and Andri Mashadi lead the cast.

Jason Statham has been an icon for the action genre for decades now. While his most formative films were in the early 2000s, his fans have been waiting for something significant for years now. While Wrath of Man did come close, it did not possess the same essence that made his films so enjoyable.

This pattern persisted until The Beekeeper buzzed into the picture. The film easily entered the same category as classics like The Transporter yet stood out in the best ways possible. Having been directed by the creator of 2016’s Suicide Squad, it is not surprising that the film’s fast-paced action has led it on the path of a sequel.

However, it would seem that David Ayer has been replaced with another director, and the decision could make the series a lot more bloody.

Buzz buzz: Our prayers have been answered, because the only two movies that actually deserve to become franchises are now getting sequels. First there was the announcement last year that Russell Crowe would return to ride his little scooter in a sequel to "The Pope's Exorcist," and now, Jason Statham is getting the beehive back together in a sequel to his best action movie in years.

That's right, "The Beekeeper" will ride again, with Deadline reporting that Statham is returning to star in a sequel to his only 2024 action film, which was a box office and streaming hit. Not only that, but "The Beekeeper 2" will be directed by none other than Indonesian director and guys-beating-the-everloving-gory-s***-out-of-each-other enthusiast Timo Tjahjanto.

The original "The Beekeeper" was directed by David Ayer and starred Statham as an ordinary beekeeper who is also a former assassin who worked for a secret organization known as The Beekeepers.

Fresh off of directing the Bob Odenkirk action sequel Nobody 2 (which is now in post-production) for Universal, Timo Tjahjanto has signed on to direct the Jason Statham action sequel The Beekeeper 2 for Miramax! Deadline reports that filming on the Statham movie is expected to begin this fall.

Miramax and The Meg action hero Jason Statham are officially reteaming on the action sequel The Beekeeper 2. What’s more exciting is that, per Deadline, The Shadow Strays and Nobody 2 filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has been set to direct.

Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the first film, is back to pen the screenplay. Production is set to begin this fall.

No sequel plot details as of yet, but The Beekeeper followed “a retired clandestine human intelligence operative who sets out for revenge after his kind-hearted landlady becomes the victim of a phishing scam that steals millions of dollars from a charity she runs.”

The buzz continues for the beekeeper — with Jason Statham returning to star in “The Beekeeper 2.”

The Miramax movie is set to start production in the fall, with “Nobody 2” director Timo Tjahjanto taking the reins from David Ayer, who helmed the first kooky conspiracy thriller, which debuted last January and grossed $152 million worldwide.

Statham stars as Adam Clay, a retired government assassin (a former “Beekeeper” operative turned actual honeycomb minder) who gets back in the game after a phishing attack targets the kindly old woman (Phylicia Rashad) from whom he rents a barn, stealing millions of dollars from a charity she runs. As Clay goes berserker mode in his quest for vengeance, the film turns into the kind of actioner audiences expect from Statham — with his gruff, baldheaded vigilante leaving a bloody trail in his wake, but ultimately beating the bad guys.

The Raid star Iko Uwais is moving up from action star to director, as well as from director to studio head in one swift movement (not unlike his martial arts moves). The Indonesian martial arts star, whose style is a form called Silat, was recently seen in films like Expend4bles and will be in the upcoming Skyline: Warpath, with fellow action star Scott Adkins. Additionally, Uwais can be seen in the sci-fi thriller Ash, which stars Eiza Gonzalez and Aaron Paul, and it is due to release in March for a short theatrical release before streaming on Shudder.

Deadline has now reported that Uwais is unveiling the start of his own production company — Uwais Pictures. The launch of his production company will be emphasizing action films for its slate and the studio is already hitting the ground running with two movies ready for sale at the European Film Market in Berlin next month.

Exclusive: International action star Iko Uwais, known for The Raid, Expendables and Skyline franchises, is officially launching his production label Uwais Pictures with two new films on sale at next month’s EFM in Berlin.

The action-focused production company he runs with his team of collaborators is expanding its remit to the global market. The aim is to replicate the success of modestly budgeted, local-language hits such as The Raid, The Raid: Redemption, and The Night Comes for Us.

First up on the slate are two completed action films: Timur, which is inspired by the 1996 Mapenduma hostage crisis, and Ikatan Darah. Both will be screened at the EFM by Uwais Pictures in collaboration with Gersh.

Indonesia-based action outfit Uwais Pictures specializes in incorporating fight choreography, action design, and stunt performance from the inception of its projects. Uwais and his team of collaborators have worked together for a number of years.

The action genre is known for its intense fight sequences and bloody violence, but this isn't the only reason to recommend these movies. Many underrated action films that fewer audiences are aware of incorporate fast-paced action choreography and incredible stunts that hold viewers' attention while adding innovative storytelling techniques and emotional journeys for the characters. While high-octane action movies typically do well at the box office even if the reviews aren't as strong, there are rare cases when critics adore action films, and they don't reach the widest possible audience.

While critical and audience opinions can be very different, these films are favorites among reviewers for a reason. These projects don't skimp on violence but understand how to balance gore with intricate storytelling. If nothing else, a Timo Tjahjanto movie is guaranteed to blow your hair back. That’s the only phrase that evokes the feeling of being pinned to your seat by the hurricane-like force of the Indonesian filmmaker's action scenes, which hit hard and kick harder in bone-shattering displays of hyper-kinetic ultraviolence.

No one is doing it like Timo Tjahjanto. The Indonesian filmmaker creates movies that make you say "Hell yeah," and his latest digital blood-drenched opus, "The Shadow Strays," seems designed to both excite and exhaust the viewer. Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. That’s certainly the case in The Shadow Strays, an actioner so propulsive in its ultraviolence that its constant barrage of carnage holds you firm in its grip and all but begs to be seen with the rowdiest crowd possible.

The Shadow Strays gets the pulse-pounding straight away, with an intense assassination attempt in Japan that leaves a pile of bodies on the floor and a thrilling amount of arterial spray. The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium. 

VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian genre film director who commands a fiercely loyal following, has dropped a trailer for his upcoming action thriller “The Shadow Strays.”

Audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival will get the first look at the completed film as it screens in the festival’s Midnight Madness section. It will then upload to Netflix on Oct. 17.

According to a supplied synopsis, the film “follows the story of Codename 13, a young assassin who finds herself suspended after a mission gone wrong. During her downtime, she bonds with Monji, a boy who recently lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji disappears, 13 embarks on a quest to find him, even if it means going against her mentor and the organization she belongs to, The Shadows.”

The film dives deep into themes of redemption and loyalty and is set against the backdrop of a brutal and unforgiving underworld.

Fans of Timo Tjahjanto, prepare yourselves for his new action-packed follow-up to his films Headshot, The Night Comes For Us (both starring The Raid‘s Iko Uwais) and The Big 4. The Indonesian filmmaker has now unleashed the trailer for his new movie The Shadow Strays courtesy of Netflix. Production is starting on the sequel to the 2021 action film “Nobody”, which will see Bob Odenkirk reprise his role as Hutch Mansell. Director Timo Tjahjanto, known for the Indonesian thriller “The Night Comes for Us”, has shared the first behind-the-scenes photos from the set on social media.

The original “Nobody” told the story of Hutch Mansell, a seemingly ordinary suburban dad. But when two thieves broke into his home, Hutch’s dormant combat skills were unleashed as he went after the criminals. It was revealed that Hutch actually had a violent past that was full of mysteries. The movie was a critical and box office hit, making over $57 million worldwide against a $16 million budget.

Japanese director Tanigaki Kenji has completed production in Bangkok, Thailand, on his upcoming film “The Furious,” intended as an elite-level Asian martial arts actioner.
