According to writer/director Emma Forrest, all of the characters are imbued with characteristics of Ben Mendelsohn and herself. Additionally, several of Mendelsohn's lines in the film were spoken to him in real life by Forrest.
Jemima Kirke and Lola Kirke are real-life sisters.
Ben Mendelsohn was married to the writer/director of the movie, Emma Forrest (since 2012), when the movie was filmed. While the movie was still in post-production, the couple separated, and Emma filed for divorce a few weeks later.
Ben Mendelsohn played Jemima Kirke's father on Girls.
