It’s full-scream ahead once more for London’s go-to horror festival, with Arrow Video FrightFest jumping right back into the swing of things with a huge helping of new genre treats set to screen in Leicester Square this August bank holiday. From slasher staples to voodoo gangsters, and Nicolas Cage strapped into a self-destructing leather suit, it’s another ballsy line-up from the team that have been delivering buckets of the nasty stuff for over twenty years now.

Kicking off on the Thursday night with Neill Blomkamp’s hugely anticipated tech-horror Demonic (his first feature 2015’s Chappie), and bowing out on Monday in relentlessly bloody fashion with Taiwanese outbreak actioner The Sadness, it’s set to be another heavy-duty weekend for genre fans.

We have a relatively quiet week of Blu-ray and DVD releases to kick off the month of May, but two of the titles are fantastic indie horrors that are very much worth your time—For the Sake of Vicious and A Ghost Waits. Other releases for May 4th include Rise of the Mummy, Why, The Midwife and a re-release DVD for Wes Craven’s Cursed.

Happy Thursday, everyone! On tap today is a brand new list of streaming recommendations that I have put together as part of our ongoing Indie Horror Month celebration. This time, we’re showcasing five fantastic films that are available to stream on the Arrow player and are well worth your time. One note: Clapboard Jungle doesn’t arrive on Arrow until the 19th, but I thought it was a perfect title to include here, so you just have to hang on a few days until you can finally check it out for yourself.

May 2021 is another great looking month for Arrow Video and cult movie fans with the company reissuing some classics in brand new editions, upgrading Blu-rays to 4K, and bringing a contemporary indie darling to home video. The release I'm most looking forward to is Masumura Yasuzo's classics Giants and Toys coming to Blu-ray in the US, UK, and Canada. Not far behind is cult gem Over the Edge by director Jonathan Kaplan, an exclusive UK release. "This one... is not afraid..." Arrow Video has released an official trailer for an indie horror sensation called A Ghost Waits, a big breakout hit from the genre film festival circuit last year. This super low budget indie flick is a cute horror romantic comedy of sorts. An ingeniously unique and unpredictable combo of horror, humor and heart, A Ghost Waits is a DIY labor of love years in the making from first-time writer/director Adam Stovall and producer/star MacLeod Andrews. A man's job requires him to clean a house, which turns out to be haunted. In the course of trying to exorcise the ghost, he falls in love with her. Starring MacLeod Andrews, Natalie Walker, Sydney Vollmer, and Amanda Miller. This is very creative and amusing to watch, but not great overall, in my opinion. Still worth a look if you're curious about this. You are not alone.

One of the five film festivals that took part in the ambitious Nightstream film festival, Popcorn Frights has an extra treat in store for Florida horror fans this October with their Wicked Weekend virtual event!

Taking place October 29th–November 1st, Popcorn Frights' Wicked Weekend includes an eclectic 20+ film lineup headlined by the world premiere of Smiley Face Killers, a Tracking Terror panel with Graham Reznick and Steve Moore, and a conversation with Tibor Takács about his cult 1987 film The Gate.

In the charitable spirit of Nightstream, proceeds from Wicked Weekend will help out the one-of-a-kind independent theater where Popcorn Frights usually takes place. Since this is a special treat for Florida horror fans, all film screenings will be geo-locked to the Sunshine State, with the amazing team behind Popcorn Frights continuing to keep horror alive and well in the region.

Screamfest is celebrating its 20th anniversary of screening the latest and greatest genre cinema and they've announced their lineup of features and shorts for this year's fest. The drive-in-based edition of the festival will take place from October 6th through October 15th and will open with Books of Blood!

The Screamfest Horror Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films that will be featured at the 20th annual drive-in edition. Kicking off the fest, which runs from October 6-15, is Books of Blood, the Hulu original film based on Clive Barker’s horror anthology.

From director Brannon Braga and executive producer Seth MacFarlane, Books of Blood is slated to premiere on the streamer on October 7. Starring Britt Robertson, Anna Friel, Rafi Gavron, and Yul Vazquez, the pic takes a journey into uncharted and forbidden territory through three tales tangled in space and time.

Also among the list of screenings are Thirst, the first-ever Icelandic gay splatter vampire flick, psychological horror Sweet River (making its North American debut), and social media teen slasher Initiation from Screamfest alum John Berardo, which was recently acquired by Saban Films
