The Trial of the Juntas, Argentina’s reckoning with years of murderous military dictatorship, set a precedent for the nation and the world: It remains the only instance of a public judicial system trying its own country’s former government on such a scale.

Santiago Mitre’s new drama, competing in Venice, examines the landmark case from the perspective of its lead prosecutor, casting the story as that of a bureaucrat rising to a historic moment.

“Inspired by actual events,” the screenplay by Mitre and Mariano Llinás is, like its hero, more methodical than electrifying. Dialing down his natural charisma, Argentine star Ricardo Darín, of the international hit The Secret in Their Eyes and Mitre’s The Summit, delivers a performance of restraint and intense focus as Julio Strassera, a government attorney who masks his very real sense of panic with professional doggedness.

Rather like the arc of the moral universe, “Argentina, 1985” is long, but bends toward justice. Effectively dramatizing the country’s landmark Trial of the Juntas, history’s first instance of a civilian justice system convicting a military dictatorship, Santiago Mitre’s broad, sprawling, heart-on-sleeve courtroom saga may draw from the same nightmarish period of history that has informed much of Argentine cinema’s most essential, haunting works — from 1985’s Oscar-winning “The Official Story” to last year’s “Azor” — but eschews any subtle arthouse stylings for a storytelling sensibility as robustly populist as anything by Sorkin or Spielberg.

For Argentina’s Santiago Mitre, his courtroom drama “Argentina 1985,” a Golden Lion contender at the 79th Venice Film Festival, is an examination of the machinations of power from within, as were his past four features. But unlike those films, “Argentina 1985” is based on a real event, the trial of Argentina’s military leaders who ruled with brutal impunity until democracy was finally restored in 1983.

The civil trial is considered one of the most significant in modern world history, along with the Nuremberg trials when defeated Nazi leaders were put on the stand. Former NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy has launched a new shingle with his cousin, Berlin-based advertising exec Stefan Telegdy, and they are pitching their first TV project, a 10-episode series about the Falklands/Malvinas War of 1982.

The Telegdys’ The Whole Spiel production company has partnered with Lone Wolf Pictures and Infinity Hill to produce “The Islands,” which tells the story of that 1982 war, from the perspective of the soldiers and civilians on both sides of the 74-day conflict.

Argentine writer Sebastian Rotstein is writing the screenplay for the show, which will employ writers and directors from both the U.K. and Argentina to tell the full story.

The Islands, a 10-episode drama series, is in the works from BBC alum Stephen McDonogh’s Lone Wolf Pictures, Axel Kuschevatzky, Phin Glynn and Cindy Teperman’s Infinity Hill as well as The Whole Spiel, the company launched last year by former NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy and his cousin, Stefan Telegdy.

The series, which is being shopped to networks and streamers, tells the story of the Falklands-Malvinas War of 1982 from the point of view of the people who were there and with the involvement of writers and filmmakers from both UK and Argentina. Writing is already underway, with Argentine film and TV writer Sebastian Rotstein on board.

Exclusive: London-based Gaumont UK is bolstering its local team with the appointment of Wall To Wall’s Executive Producer For Drama Myar Craig-Brown as Creative Director.

Craig-Brown will oversee Gaumont’s growing slate of drama for the global market and will report directly into executive producer Alison Jackson (Tin Star) who heads up Gaumont’s UK division.

A fervid supporter of new directors, Paris-based sales house Celluloid Dreams has dropped two clips and the poster of Brazilian João Paulo Miranda Maria’s “Memory House” (“La Casa de Antiguedades”), a first feature, but also the only Latin American title to be included in this year’s Cannes Official Selection.

Netflix has announced Eric Andre’s new comedy special, “Legalize Everything,” will premiere on June 23. In the comedian’s first stand-up special, Andre “breaks the boundaries of comedy as he critiques the war on drugs, the war on sex, and the war on fart jokes.” The special is directed by Eric Notarnicola and executive produced by Mike Rosenstein for Sunset Rose Pictures, alongside A24.

The first international festival to have taken the virtual route amid the coronavirus crisis, Series Mania’s digital edition has been hailed as a success by organizers with 1,500 participants registered from 40 countries and the equivalent of 106 days of screenings. However, challenges securing some key titles for the platform point to enduring challenges for online fests in the months ahead.

All but one show in the French competition lineup and half of the international competition roster were not made available on the festival’s platform, which was accessible to industry professionals and journalists from March 25 to April 7.

The announcement says much about Amazon Prime Video’s priorities, and the state of the streamer business in Latin America. Five takeaways:

Chile’s “La Jauría” (“The Pack”) already broadcast on domestic network Tvn, will be joined by three series set to begin production in 2020: “Iosi, El Espía Arrepentido,” “Colonia Dignidad” and “Noticia de un Secuestro.”

Gaumont, the once thriving French studio behind “The Intouchables” and “Narcos,” is set to rejig its film and TV strategy as it anticipates heavy losses in 2019.

Variety can reveal that the company has all but shut down its TV distribution operations in the U.S., recently axing 12 employees, including Vanessa Shapiro, president of worldwide distribution, and her team.

Shapiro was hired in 2017 and reported to Gaumont vice-ceo Christophe Riandée, and Gene Stein, who took over as president of Los Angeles-based Gaumont Television U.S. in 2015, following the exit of Katie O’Connell Marsh, whose latest venture, TV outfit Platform One Media, was acquired by Canada’s Boat Rocker Media in September.

Shapiro was in charge of spearheading sales of the Gaumont Television catalogue, including drama and animation series, as well as French shows. She was also in charge of international co-productions.

Spanish-language thriller The Same Blood (La Misma Sangre) starring Latin American titans Oscar Martinez and Paulina García has secured distribution in Chile and Argentina.

Twenty-three of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets have chimed in with their Best Drama Actress predictions, and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) is the favorite to win her second consecutive Emmy. After losing six times for “Mad Men,” Moss now finds herself on a roll with the TV academy as she took home two trophies last year for acting in and producing “The Handmaid’s Tale.” While she’s the favorite with 15 Experts picking her to win, two other leading ladies have the support of 4 Experts apiece: Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Keri Russell (“The Americans”). Gold Derby can exclusively reveal all of the Emmy episode submissions for the seven 2018 contenders as Best Drama Series. Each program enters six episodes from this past season, and those will be available for voters to view on the Television Academy voter portal.

Last year’s champ “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns to defend its title but will face off for the first time against two-time winner “Game of Thrones,” which was not eligible to compete in 2017. Other contenders back from last year’s race are “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “This Is Us” and “Westworld.” Returning after an absence is the final season of “The Americans.”

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Keri Russell is entering “The Americans” episode “The Summit” as her Emmy submission for Best Drama Actress. This installment aired May 16 and was the eighth episode of the sixth and final season for the FX show.

In this segment, Soviet spy Elizabeth Jennings (Russell) has been posing as a nurse to a terminal woman. When her husband fails to help her commit suicide, Elizabeth must finish the job. She has been using a young governmental worker to bug his boss’ office. When he figures out her plan, he confronts her in the car. She could kill him off but lets him go instead.

Much of what happens in “The Summit” can be summed up in a few simple sentences: Philip tells Elizabeth he’s been spying on her. Elizabeth finally says no to a mission, effectively switching sides in the internal Soviet conflict. Stan is more convinced than ever his neighbors are Russian operatives.

But details matter, as they always do on “The Americans,” and one telling mistake seems to be the damning one for Elizabeth: smoking. People notice that she smokes a lot, and even though she’s covered her ass in every other way imaginable (ways which would’ve seemed unimaginable — all those wigs — before they were depicted in this series), that vague identifier could be enough to be her downfall.

Riviera Maya, Mexico — As widely predicted, Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” swept the 5th Platino Ibero-American Film Awards Sunday, held at the Xcaret Riviera Maya resort in Mexico.

This is the second time Lelio has snagged the best picture Platino Award. His poignant drama about a divorcee, “Gloria,” won at the inaugural edition of the four-year old annual event.

The Platino Awards sweep is another feather in the cap for Lelio who took home the foreign language Oscar for Chile this year for “A Fantastic Woman.”

“Those of us who make movies play with perception and reality; those who watch our films are responsible for making sense of it,” said Lelio upon receiving his best director prize.

In industry terms, Spain was a producer or very often co-producer of virtually all the winning projects, both TV and film.

Chicago – It’s coming up on Closing Night for the 34th Chicago Latino Film Festival, and the two weeks of the fest was a celebration and gift to film in Chicago. The Closing Night Gala on April 19th, 2018, will feature the film “The Summit” (“La Cordillera”) from Argentina, Spain and France. UTA has signed two Latin American filmmakers, Fellipe Barbosa and Santiago Mitre, both of whom have films playing at the Cannes Film Festival.

Brazilian helmer Barbosa directed Gabriel and the Mountain, which is playing in the Critics' Week section. The film follows a man named Gabriel who decides to travel the world for one year, and ends up in Africa where he disappears in Malawi. His previous credits include the feature Casa Grande, which he directed and co-wrote, and the feature documentary Laura, which won best documentary at the 2011 Hamptons Film Festival.

The UK’s Chris Martin, Switzerland’s Ivan Madeo [pictured, left] and Poland’s Maria Blicharska [pictured, right] are among the 20 up-and-coming European producers to be selected for the 2017 edition of European Film Promotion’s (Efp) networking platform Producers On The Move, which takes place at Cannes Film Festival.

As in previous years, the five-day event (May 19-23) will include pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings, case studies and other meetings with the international industry gathered in Cannes.

Two of the producers from this year’s line-up have films in the festival’s programme: Poland’s Maria Blicharska will be presenting Frost in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar, while France’s Didar Domehri was a co-producer on Argentinian director Santiago Mitre’s La Cordillera which will have its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section.

Roman Polanski’s Based On A True Story is one of several additions to the Cannes line-up announced on Thursday.

The film will play out of competition and stars Eva Green, Emmanuelle Seigner and Vincent Perez and tells of a writer who gets involved with an obsessive fan.

Meanwhile Ruben Östlund’s The Square lands a competition slot. Elisabeth Moss and Dominic West star in the drama about a city square where there are no rules. Östlund’s last film, Force Majeure, won the Un Certain Regard jury prize in 2014.

There are two additions to Un Certain Regard. Political drama La Cordillera stars Ricardo Darin and is Argentinian director Santiago Mitre’s follow-up to his Cannes Critics’ Week 2015 Nespresso Grand Prize-winner Paulina. The other new selection is Walking Past The Future from Li Ruijun.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced the addition of seven new films to the 2017 lineup, including Roman Polanski’s “D’après une histoire vraie” (“Based on a True Story”). Written by Polanski and French filmmaker Olivier Assayas and based on the novel by Delphine de Vigan, the film will screen in the Out of Competition section. Other filmmakers whose work has been added include Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ostlund, Argentinian writer-director Santiago Mitre and Iranian-born Swiss filmmaker Barbet Schroeder.
