Twelve stories set in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Brazil make up Horizontes Latinos, a selection of the year’s feature films, not yet released in Spain, from among all those totally or partially produced in Latin America, directed by moviemakers of Latino origin, or which are set against the backdrop or subject of Latino communities in the rest of the world. In the selection of titles competing for the Horizontes Award at San Sebastian’s 71st edition are two films to have carried off awards at the last Wip Latam –El castillo / The Castle and Estranho caminho / A Strange Path– and at the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum –Alemania–.

The Trial of the Juntas, Argentina’s reckoning with years of murderous military dictatorship, set a precedent for the nation and the world: It remains the only instance of a public judicial system trying its own country’s former government on such a scale.
Santiago Mitre’s new drama, competing in Venice, examines the landmark case from the perspective of its lead prosecutor, casting the story as that of a bureaucrat rising to a historic moment.
“Inspired by actual events,” the screenplay by Mitre and Mariano Llinás is, like its hero, more methodical than electrifying. Dialing down his natural charisma, Argentine star Ricardo Darín, of the international hit The Secret in Their Eyes and Mitre’s The Summit, delivers a performance of restraint and intense focus as Julio Strassera, a government attorney who masks his very real sense of panic with professional doggedness.

Rather like the arc of the moral universe, “Argentina, 1985” is long, but bends toward justice. Effectively dramatizing the country’s landmark Trial of the Juntas, history’s first instance of a civilian justice system convicting a military dictatorship, Santiago Mitre’s broad, sprawling, heart-on-sleeve courtroom saga may draw from the same nightmarish period of history that has informed much of Argentine cinema’s most essential, haunting works — from 1985’s Oscar-winning “The Official Story” to last year’s “Azor” — but eschews any subtle arthouse stylings for a storytelling sensibility as robustly populist as anything by Sorkin or Spielberg.
Small wonder, then, that Amazon Studios has boarded a film clearly aiming to be both a domestic smash and an international crossover hit — buoyed by the reliable star power of Ricardo Darín, his signature suaveness tempered by a walrus mustache and boxy ‘80s frames as Julio Strassera, the dogged prosecutor who took on this charged,...

For Argentina’s Santiago Mitre, his courtroom drama “Argentina 1985,” a Golden Lion contender at the 79th Venice Film Festival, is an examination of the machinations of power from within, as were his past four features. But unlike those films, “Argentina 1985” is based on a real event, the trial of Argentina’s military leaders who ruled with brutal impunity until democracy was finally restored in 1983.
The civil trial is considered one of the most significant in modern world history, along with the Nuremberg trials when defeated Nazi leaders were put on the stand. The difference in this David vs. Goliath story is that Argentina’s military junta still had a grip on power when they were taken to court for their crimes.
Structured like a thriller but with some touches of wry humor, “Argentina 1985” is based on the story of lead prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, and their young...

The Islands, a 10-episode drama series, is in the works from BBC alum Stephen McDonogh’s Lone Wolf Pictures, Axel Kuschevatzky, Phin Glynn and Cindy Teperman’s Infinity Hill as well as The Whole Spiel, the company launched last year by former NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy and his cousin, Stefan Telegdy.
The series, which is being shopped to networks and streamers, tells the story of the Falklands-Malvinas War of 1982 from the point of view of the people who were there and with the involvement of writers and filmmakers from both UK and Argentina. Writing is already underway, with Argentine film and TV writer Sebastian Rotstein on board.

Ibon Cormenzana is directing this immersive, high-octane emotional adventure, rubbing shoulders with the most perilous, harsh and spectacular sides of nature. Alegría, tristeza, miedo, rabia was the original title of the previous film by director-producer Ibon Cormenzana, a Spanish-French production that was eventually released with only the first two elements from that working title (Happy Sad). Once again, these emotions – and many more – will have a starring role in his new movie, La cima (lit. “The Summit”), which is currently being shot and which, once again, is being made as a joint venture between companies in France and Spain. This epic story stars two actors who are very much in demand right now: Patricia López Arnaiz, the favourite among the nominees for various impending awards thanks to her work in Ane Is Missing (the feature debut by David Pérez Sañudo), and Javier Rey,...

“The only absolute in history is change,” said the Victorian historian Lord Acton. He might have been talking about the streaming platforms’ current international strategies. Since they launched internationally, Netflix and Amazon’s focus and priorities have been in constant evolution. Current pressures – evolving demographies, new regulation, new competition, still untapped growth – mean that re-engineering won’t stop any time soon.

Buenos Aires — 1844 Entertainment, an emerging player on the U.S. distribution scene, has acquired North American rights to Argentine writer-director Alejandro Fadel’s “Muere monstruo muere”, sold by The Match Factory. Gold Derby predicted that Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) would easily win her second consecutive Emmy Award for Best Drama Actress, however Claire Foy (“The Crown”) stopped her at the finish line. Of Gold Derby’s 27 Emmy Experts from major media outlets, Foy was the pick of only two, giving her second-place odds of 8/1. Moss led with a whopping 18 Experts predicting her to win, resulting in leading 4/9 odds. Foy is TV’s reigning two-time SAG champ, so it really wasn’t a surprise to see her winning at the Emmys, particularly since she earned extra buzz from leaving Netflix’s regal drama along with the rest of the main stars in a massive re-casting ahead of Season 3.

Emmy was slow to recognize the quality of the work in “The Americans,” and that includes the performances of co-stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as undercover Kgb agents Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings who are operating in America. But TV academy voters woke up at last. Russell has received Best Drama Actress nominations for her work in the series’ fourth and fifth seasons and is nominated again this year for the sixth and final season of the FX series. Can she prevail at last?
Russell shrewdly selected “The Summit” as her Emmy episode submission, as Elizabeth is the driving force behind most of the film’s major plot lines. She learns that her activities, deemed suspicious by some in Russia, have been spied on by her partner Philip at the request of a Soviet bigwig. When the attempt to kill Elena doesn’t quite do the job, Elizabeth is then asked to finish her off,...

After losing a whopping six Emmys for “Mad Men,” TV academy members are poised to make it up to Elisabeth Moss in a big way. She just won Best Drama Actress for “The Handmaid’s Tale” last year, and now she’s on track to claim a bookend trophy, according to Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions. One of the major pluses in Moss’ favor is that there’s no clear runner-up in sight. In fact, you could make a strong case for all of her co-nominees, which likely will cause a split vote for second place and help Moss claim victory again.
Of Gold Derby’s 26 Emmy Experts from major media outlets, Moss is predicted to win by 17 of them, resulting in leading 1/2 odds. She plays June/Offred on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a woman who lives as a concubine for the rich and powerful in a dystopian future. She...

Twenty-three of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets have chimed in with their Best Drama Actress predictions, and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) is the favorite to win her second consecutive Emmy. After losing six times for “Mad Men,” Moss now finds herself on a roll with the TV academy as she took home two trophies last year for acting in and producing “The Handmaid’s Tale.” While she’s the favorite with 15 Experts picking her to win, two other leading ladies have the support of 4 Experts apiece: Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Keri Russell (“The Americans”). Talk about a nail-biter! Who do You think will win?

“The Summit” is driven by moments of incredible tension, but somewhat uniquely for The Americans, those moments center on things that don’t happen. Philip can’t reach Henry, he can’t enter Stavos’s home, he can’t make himself feel better. Elizabeth doesn’t get a listening device in Glenn’s briefcase, she doesn’t stop…

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Americans” Season 6, Episode 8, “The Summit.”]
Much of what happens in “The Summit” can be summed up in a few simple sentences: Philip tells Elizabeth he’s been spying on her. Elizabeth finally says no to a mission, effectively switching sides in the internal Soviet conflict. Stan is more convinced than ever his neighbors are Russian operatives.
But details matter, as they always do on “The Americans,” and one telling mistake seems to be the damning one for Elizabeth: smoking. People notice that she smokes a lot, and even though she’s covered her ass in every other way imaginable (ways which would’ve seemed unimaginable — all those wigs — before they were depicted in this series), that vague identifier could be enough to be her downfall.
With two episodes left before the series says dosvedanya, IndieWire is taking a look at where things stand at the present moment, but also...

Riviera Maya, Mexico — As widely predicted, Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” swept the 5th Platino Ibero-American Film Awards Sunday, held at the Xcaret Riviera Maya resort in Mexico.
This is the second time Lelio has snagged the best picture Platino Award. His poignant drama about a divorcee, “Gloria,” won at the inaugural edition of the four-year old annual event.
The Platino Awards sweep is another feather in the cap for Lelio who took home the foreign language Oscar for Chile this year for “A Fantastic Woman.”
“Those of us who make movies play with perception and reality; those who watch our films are responsible for making sense of it,” said Lelio upon receiving his best director prize.
In industry terms, Spain was a producer or very often co-producer of virtually all the winning projects, both TV and film.
