Inspired by the work of Jim Henson and featuring what appears to be all in-camera creature and visual FX, Lookouts is an impressive fantasy short from new director David Bousquet. Certainly it rivals anything we've seen from recent big budget fantasy films like Seventh Son so I hope this gets him some attention. Lookouts was filmed in the misty overgrowth of Mendocino’s redwood forests and overall looks simply stunning. Synopsis: On their final trial as village lookouts, a troop of young scouts are ambushed by the very creature they were hunting. After a violent battle the lone survivor, Pehn, escapes into the shadows of the Eyrewood, a mysterious and deadly forest that is home to all manner of wild creatures. You have to watch this incredibly awesome short film called Lookouts. It’s seriously the best short film I’ve seen all year. This thing is freakin’ stunning! The story centers around a troop of scouts who have to battle a legendary creature called Basilisk, which is a deadly winged titan.
The short was shot and directed by David Bousquet, who was inspired by the Penny Arcade comic series called Lookouts. He did an incredible and impressive job bringing this story to life. I was completely blown away! One of the coolest aspects of the project is that it was shot practically with “live visual effects.” It’s also explained that all of the sets, costumes, and monsters you see in the film were inspired by the creatures created by Jim Henson. Here’s the synopsis:

"Tomorrow holds your final trial as Lookouts..." Short films just keep getting better and better. Lookouts is a homemade short directed by David Bousquet (who is also the film's director of photography) inspired by a Penny Arcade comic series about "Lookouts" scouts who head into a deadly forest to hunt a creature. This live-action short follows one of the scouts, Pehn, who escaped the first attack and is being tracked by the basilisk. You'll be amazed to discover that "the majority of the film is shot practically with live visual effects." They made "sets, costumes, and monsters inspired by Jim Henson's creations from our childhood" and filmed this in Mendocino. It's seriously astonishing how good this is, and you'll wish it was even longer.
