A neat-and-tidy romantic comedy dedicated to capturing the messy reality of modern dating, Sam Boyd’s Los Angeles-set “In a Relationship” suggests what “La La Land” might have been if you took away the retro-chic musical numbers and sparkly, soda-fizz chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, leaving only commitment-phobic white people looking for connection in a city where there’s always something better around the corner. Though unlikely to land more than a day-and-date VOD release, the movie is much funnier than the vast majority of indie comedies, serving as a great audition piece for a career of sitcom directing.
By focusing on two couples — one testing out a break after several years together, the other hooking up for the first time — Boyd presents an amusing before-and-after view of millennial mating rituals, such as they are. That was also the conceit of his 2015 short film of the same name...

Now that Disney is purchasing 21st Century Fox, here’s what we know: $52.4 billion will change hands, the six-studio system will now be five, and Disney will have a serious arsenal for the 2019 launch of its over-the-top streaming services. Presuming that Disney convinces the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice that the union won’t violate existing antitrust laws, here’s a look at some of the merger’s biggest questions.
What Becomes of Fox’s Leadership?
The Disney/Fox merger comes on the same day that Disney/Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” hits multiplexes. Who from the Fox motion picture side will go to Disney (vice-chairman Emma Watts?) and who will be free to look for a new job (Fox chairman Stacey Snider?). Disney is happy with studio steward Alan Horn and his team.
With Snider’s ex-Universal president Scott Stuber running movies at Netflix,...

Growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles provided fertile inspiration for Michelle Morgan, director of the recent iTunes New Filmmaker Spotlight “It Happened in L.A.” (Click here to watch the film)
“I’m born and raised in La, so it’s a world that I know pretty well,” she said. “I lived in the city when I was a child and then I spent most of my young-adult years in the suburbs, so the city was always this mythical thing to us in the suburbs.”
“It Happened in L.A.” follows thirtysomething Annette (Morgan), her boyfriend, Elliot (Jorma Taccone), and her Bff, Baker (Dree Hemingway), as they navigate the perils of the bleak dating scene in Los Angeles. Is there such a thing as a perfect couple, or is that an urban myth?

Everyone’s a critic, but some are more agreeable than others. Gizmodo has put together a list of the most contrarian film reviewers around, using a just-for-fun methodology that, like all such endeavors, gives a general idea of its subject while being far from definitive.

Earlier this year, critics group made headlines when they came together to protest Disney’s decision to ban the Los Angeles Times’ access to the studio’s films. The ban was eventually lifted, but it raised a number of questions about how critics and studios maintain an ongoing relationship.
During a recent panel discussion at the Key West Film Festival moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, Los Angeles Times’ critic Kenneth Turan was joined by Rolling Stone’s David Fear, Time Out New York’s Joshua Rothkopf, Buzzfeed’s Alison Willmore, and Miami-based freelancer Juan Barquin to discuss the ramifications of Disney’s decision and other related issues. The following is an edited excerpt from that conversation.
Kenneth Turan: Around the time of “Thor,” a lot of people in the film department of the paper were not getting invited. We knew screenings were taking place. We got in touch...

There’s an interesting continuity going on in the Disney “Frozen” world. In the “Frozen Fever” short (2015), Elsa (Idina Menzel) catches cold and nearly ruins the birthday party for Anna (Kristen Bell). And, in “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” which opens in front of Pixar’s “Coco” (a first for Disney), there are no holiday traditions to embrace during their first Christmas together, also thanks to Elsa’s curse.
Clearly, there are emotional loose ends being tied up between the sibling princesses, which will presumably allow them to be better prepared to confront whatever threat awaits them in “Frozen 2” (November 27, 2009).
Meanwhile, Olaf (Josh Gad) continues to evolve as the child-like snowman in the 21-minute featurette (originally intended as an ABC holiday special). But with its eye-popping animation and emphasis on family and tradition, “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” makes the perfect opener for “Coco,” which embraces similar thematic territory during Día de los Muertos.

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons has been accused of committing sexual assault while director Brett Ratner allegedly watched, according to an article by The Los Angeles Times.

The coming-of-age-in-Los-Angeles genre is populated with plenty of movies, but few are as fresh as “It Happened In L.A.” Earning strong buzz out of Sundance this year, as the weather is getting cooler, this warm comedy is on the way to brighten the season.
Written, directed, and starring Michelle Morgan with Jorma Taccone, Dree Hemingway, and Kentucker Audley in support, the story follows a neurotic couple who look to their friends to see how their relationship is going.

Update: Disney has “agreed to restore access” to L.A. Times critics for advance screenings of its films. The National Society of Film Critics joined the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle and the Boston Society of Film Critics in denouncing the Walt Disney Company’s media blackout of the Los Angeles Times announced last week in retaliation for critical stories by the paper. In addition, all four groups voted to disqualify Disney’s films from year-end awards consideration until the blackout is publicly lifted. On Nov. 3, the L.A. Times announced that its writers and editors had been blocked.

Given all the fawning press that Disney generally receives, mostly on the movie front thanks to their mega-successful string of franchises, you’d think the mega-corporation could take a little criticism. Not so. The L.A. Times recently published the two-part story — “Is Disney paying its share in Anaheim?” and “How one election changed Disneyland’s relationship with its hometown” — which asked serious questions about Disney’s apparently uneven relationship with the city that houses Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Disney Defends Banning La Times From Screenings: ‘Complete Disregard for Basic Journalism Standards’
Following news that the Walt Disney Co. is leaving Los Angeles Times reporters outside the velvet rope for its upcoming movies after a story detailing the company’s business ties with Anaheim was published, Disney said the publication “showed a complete disregard for basic journalistic standards.” “We regularly work with news organizations around the world that we don’t always agree with, but in this instance the L.A. Times showed a complete disregard for basic journalistic standards,” Disney said in a statement in response to The Times’ allegations. “Despite our sharing numerous indisputable facts with the reporter, several editors, and the publisher over.

A closed-door, month-long row between Walt Disney Studios and The Los Angeles Times became public when the newspaper told readers why there was no “Thor: Ragnarock” review Nov. 3. “’Thor: Ragnarok,’ which opens wide today, will not be reviewed in today’s paper,” read a note from the editors in the Calendar section. “Walt Disney Co. studios declined to screen the movie for The Times’ critics, citing what it called unfair coverage of its business ties with the city of Anaheim. The Times will continue to review and cover Disney movies and programs when they are available to the public.”
Disney’s entities also include networks ABC, A+E and Espn. La Times reporter Glenn Whipp told IndieWire, “Our TV writers have had their access stripped from the Disney TV sites for a while now,” saying it stemmed back to early October.

Actress Busy Philipps is speaking out against movie producer and director Brett Ratner.
On Wednesday, Philipps, 38, responded to the news that the longtime Hollywood power player, 48, had been accused of multiple cases of sexual misconduct or harassment — including by actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge — in an article published by the Los Angeles Times.
“Olivia Munn has been saying this for years and he has been disgusting about the allegations and to her for years. He is a garbage human,” Philipps wrote.
Munn claims that while visiting the set of the 2004 Ratner-directed film After the Sunset, he masturbated in front of her.

The best place to see “L.A. Times” is unquestionably L.A. — more to the point, probably the Los Feliz or the Vista theaters over by the hipster enclaves of Silver Lake and vicinity. But it’s safe to say that a very good second option would be the Sundance Film Festival, where writer-director-actor Michelle Morgan’s comedy had its world premiere on Friday night. “L.A. Times” is an indie rom-com for the 21st century, steeped in the trends and foibles of trendy Millennials who work in or around the entertainment industry. It’s a film made for audiences with personal experience negotiating Santa.

Monday’s Brett Ratner investigation in the The Los Angeles Times, with testimonials from a half-dozen women accusing him of sexual harassment, continued what’s become a familiar pattern. First-hand accounts. Apologies and/or denials. And now, the career blowback begins.
Depending on who you ask, Warner Bros. cut ties with Ratner late this afternoon — or to hear Ratner tell it, he made the decision. Ratner said in a statement, “In light of the allegations being made, I am choosing to personally step away from all Warner Bros.-related activities. I don’t want to have any possible negative impact to the studio until these personal issues are resolved.”
The news came after Ratner lost his biopic on former Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner. “We are putting all further development of our projects with RatPac Entertainment on hold until we are able to review the situation further,” a Playboy Enterprises spokesman told The Wrap today.
