One such name is Trafalgar D. Water Law, who has quickly risen in the ranks of popularity and has become an essential figure who directly or indirectly affects Oda-Sensei’s storyline. Once a victim of the World Government, he has now played a major role in taking out Doflamingo and Big Mom.
As a result, the fans of the series have been curious about a showdown between the Captain of the Heart Pirates and Roronoa Zoro. The showdown would be nothing short of epic, as the characters would flaunt their prowess neatly equipped with intricate strategy.

Right from his debut feature “Runaway” in 1995, Kim Sung-su has established two things vehemently: he can work with big stars and he can work on a big budget quite effectively. Starting with a then-young but nonetheless impressive Lee Byung-hun, he has since gone on to work with the likes of Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, Hwang Jung-min and even Zhang Ziyi in a rare Korean production appearance. Since his last two works, he has also established that he is also adept at working with an ensemble cast, with both “The Flu” and the highly impressive “Asura: The City of Madness” having an extensive and impressive cast-list. Seven years since “Asura: The City of Madness”, Kim returns to the big screen and with a couple actors he has worked with for “12.12: The Day”, a political thriller based on recent Korean history.

Thriller is a genre that has been done to death in South Korea and directors now need to constantly reinvent narratives and genre tropes if they want to make a substantial feature that stands the test of time. Where many fail to do so, Director Kim Sung-soo managed to do just that in 2016 with “Asura: The City of Madness”, a production which subverted expectations in a number of different ways.
This is a very dark film featuring a number of characters, all played by A-listers, yet manages to surprise as every single one of these characters is so despicable and deplorable that you do not find yourself rooting for any. This is particularly an achievement for a narrative that has you hooked from the first minute to the last, with the power struggles between the characters proving to be the best part. Actors Jung Woo-sung and Hwang Jung-min are confirmed be teaming up once again with Kim Sung-su, the director of the hard-hitting “Asura: The City of Madness” for new project “Spring in Seoul”. They will be joined by Park Hae-joon, who was last seen in the Netflix horror film, “The 8th Night” and will also have an important role to play in the upcoming “Emergency Declaration”.

Being the fourth collaboration between Kim Sung-soo and Jung Woo-sung, after “Beat” (1997), “City of The Rising Sun” (1999) and “Musa The Warrior” (2001), and featuring an all star cast, “Asura: The City of Madness” was one of the most anticipated films of the year. However, and in contrast to the global rule that wants films that create much buzz to lack quality, this time, the hype was absolutely justified.

While the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 is still ongoing, and will probably continue for quite some time, this naturally does not stop movie publishers worldwide to try and cash in on these developments. At least it seems that way, considering a South Korean film which was made in 2013 has been published in countries like Germany, albeit under the much more fitting title “Pandemic”. Leaving this context aside “Flu” is yet another entry into South Korea’s ventures into the genre of the disaster movie after such promising releases like “Ashfall”. Directed by Kim Sung-soo (“Asura: The City of Madness”) “Flu” combines the aesthetics of blockbuster cinema with a human story about survival and saving others.

The place Korean cinema now holds in the international film circuit owes much to this particular category, since it was the films back in the beginning of the century that kickstarted the new Golden Era of the country’s movie industry,. Titles like “Old Boy“, “Memories of Murder“, “The Chaser“, “I Saw the Devil” and a plethora of others are still mentioned frequently in Best oF lists of movies from the country or the category, and actually remain the most renowned among western viewers, along, of course, “Parasite“. Evidently, the industry rode this wave a bit too far during the 2010s, with crime thrillers coming out from every side, to the point that a number of them seem like they were produced on an “assembly line” due to how similar they look like and function. However, even in this maze of mediocrity, there are still a number that stand out,...
