During Tuesday’s episode of This Is Us, titled “The 20’s," fans learn of the exact spot where Kate (Chrissy Metz) was when the Pearson patriarch (Milo Ventimiglia) died.

Midway through the episode, we see 20-something Kate sitting in her car, snacking on fast food French fries in front of a house. She was dressed in a turquoise and black top, the uniform for her job as a waitress while attending college night classes. Tears fill her eyes as she watches dressed-up children laugh and bond over candy on Halloween.

The mystery surrounding how the Pearson patriarch died has been an ongoing question since early in the season, but on Tuesday’s episode, titled “What Now?,” the picture may have gotten a whole lot clearer. Following William’s “fun-eral” (Randall’s words, not ours) and Kevin’s successful play opening, Kate finally dropped a huge bombshell about her dad’s death: She is the reason he died.

At least one tangible answer was given in regard to the mystery of his death: Jack died when Kevin, Kate and Randall were teenagers.
