There are a lot of charachters and it might take a few episodes to get a clue who is who, but once you do it becomes more and more intriguing. This TV series basically shows how politics and media are interconnected and what goes on behind the headlines we usually see in the newspapers.
It is an open secret that many of local newspapers in Balkan region (in this case Croatia) are in some way influenced by people who sponsor them and they are used as some type of political propaganda, so there is nothing the journalists can do about it if they want to keep their job.
Well, almost nothing, as some journalists in the series show.
It is a pretty good show, and I am glad there will be a second season.

Good tv has a social conscience while maintaining entertainment value. Took me a couple episodes to realize the heavy weight intentions of this show but now i've got it. To the point where I can laugh along w the bad guy while rooting for the good guys, so to speak. In other words, see the chess game while enjoying the ride.

Great Croatian political thriller, two candidates running for president, the incumbent a sick woman and the challenger, the focus of the series, a devious viscious character, in the middle a newspaper full of happles working class journalists determined to cleanse all the misery and corruption surrounding the political environment involving the challenger, the Judiciary and the Police. Fast paced, with great character development, good imagery First season compelling and vibrant, second season drags a bit but keeps on delivering with quality. Had some downs but it was altogether fun. Big production effort to be valued for a country not traditionally used to make this behemoth series
One of the best tv show's I've ever watched. Rich and layered storyline makes you crave for another episode. Highly recommended!
Outstanding casting , great script and perfect direction . The paper has much relevance to the demise of freedoms and liberties even in the free world. In view of populist right's rise in both Europe and North America fed by xenophobia , economic fall and immigration challenges , this series has so much to tell to the world . As fundamental freedoms are curtailed in the name of insecurity (?) around the world and wealthy nations rise their borders , crime , corruption and demagogue prevail significantly . The Paper is indeed a wake up call to what we undergo.
Though the story is based upon dirty relationships revolving around businessmen , politicians and high level state officials , it is easily applicable to many nations around the world .
Honestly speaking I was not expecting such a great production from Croatia . Hvala. I am looking forward to seeing the season 3.
It cuts the social edges of society throughout neoliberal evolution in such a deep manner that you get hypnotized from the 5 th. episode on, as you start the realize how common the chracters, the stories are to your life. I live in Turkey and the government would jail all a crew who ever dares to reflect such life like, documentary stories. Hard core fascism for Croitia will come in the 4.th season I suppose where they'll ignore every reality opposing theirs and rush over it. I experienced these stages of media in my country, same personifications , same deep throat, deep state deforming chracters and as I watched it all day long I was deeply consicous that world is only a village. Some think they live in a privileged paradise and some in the kitchen of hell. After all it is the same village where you can only survive with intellect, conscious, power and will. Or you die as a happy sheep, if you are lucky enought not to confront an apocalypse as a result of your pragmatic political choices and silliness. Watch it as a reality reflection, documentary maybe, and see how sincere, honest, and boldly it has been written, performed.

This show is for all of watchers who love political drama with some of crime elements. It features many roles, from minor and regular people, to influencial and merciless, it shows how real life works, and how regular people strugle to make a difference. Show can relate to HoC, but it is different in many ways, or is high politics same everywhere? Great show!

Big fan of good complex European tv series. Seen plenty of them.
The Paper. Lots of characters, all with various allegiances and motives. Edgy story. This would be great if I'd never seen something like this before. But mid-way through the 3rd episode, I realized it was an effort to keep track of everybody and my interest was seriously flagging.
Wish this offered an innovation I haven't seen before.
Sponsored by the tobacco industry? Practically all the characters smoke, whatever the occasion. Really annoying! Otherwise interesting bits.

The series moves at a very slow pace and could have been condensed in fewer episodes. Some drone shots of the city were pretty at first but then they became so overused and were just another thing that slowed the plot down.
The screenwriter as a journalist writing about journalism certainly does have a better knowledge of the field but I find it questionable how honest he wants to be with it. Namely, the journalists are portrayed as being very principled when it comes to their work, as if they are all very passionate about it, wanting to do the right thing, and it seems like at least somewhat of an idealisation. The screenwriter also has no previous experience with screenplays and while he is confident he learned everything in few hours, I feel his lack of experience shows.
There is a plethora of characters and oftentimes they do not escape from being stereotyped in various ways so I struggled to find someone particularly engaging. Overall the product is sort of passable but the series got fairly hyped and presented as the best local product out there so I certainly feel let down.
It doesn't give a good impression of the Croatian male. Domineering, bullying, and altogether not very pleasant individuals which any woman would be insane to marry ! The women were portrayed as very much as subservient.
The film was not easy to follow (sub-titles no included) but more of the names of the characters being hard to remember. The storyline as such was good, but was very 'plodding' , and on occasions the camera man clearly had had a few drinks before turning on his camera, as some of the angles were 'weird', also I can understand why other reviewers gave up after a few episodes. I did stick it through to the end of 2 seasons, but it took me a while, only managing 1 or 2 episodes at one sitting.

It last past the 3rd episode. They kept telling the same story, episode after episode. and showing pictures of an unnamed city full of dirty white tired looking buildings. I was hypnotized after ep. 3 but didn't sign off. I don't remember anybody's name, just that there were good guys and bad guys and when one of them died, I couldn't remember what he/she looked like. The only benefit I got from this show was that I crossed Croatia off my places to visit because it looked so boring and the characters like to plod a lot. I think they were actually tired of being in the series for so long. Netflix, let this be a lesson to you - if someone brings you a 12 episode series don't buy it until they've cut the playing time at least in half and preferable 75%.
If you want to watch a tv show where all the characters are grumpy all the time, this is the show for you.

If this show has made it to the most popular streaming network, anyone can make it. Or: the quality standards have fallen low, long live mediocrity.
There is some OK replicated shots, seen a thousand times before. Otherwise, cuts like in Indian music videos, absurd amount of stereotypes, nothing important happens, most of the time. Amazingly a lot of bad acting. If someone manages to connect to any of the characters - congratulations, you're a special kind of person.
Super bad.

In few words: somehow good production and nothing more else. Sure, this show is little bit above of ex-yu standards, but really, is it all?
