Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.
Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. With Gotham effectively in ruins, it’s a race to see who can control the streets, and he thinks his time has come.
That becomes a bit harder, though, when Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone, unexpectedly returns from Arkham Asylum.
We won’t spoil anything, but here are the major players you’ll need to keep up with.
“The Penguin” (Max) Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell)

Designer, editor and author Hal Rubenstein is looking to bring his best-selling book about the influence of television on fashion … to television.
Rubenstein, a founding editor of InStyle magazine, is developing a docuseries based on his best-selling 2023 book Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows along with unscripted producer Magilla Entertainment (Discovery’s Moonshiners, HGTV’s Beachfront Bargain Hunt). The producers are taking the show to potential buyers this week.
As with the book, the potential series will feature Rubenstein talking with costume designers, producers and stars about the ways television has both reflected and influenced fashion trends. Among the shows featured in the book are Friends, Emily in Paris, Miami Vice, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Empire, Gossip Girl, Dynasty and RuPaul’s Drag Race, among many others.

It took almost three hours for Emmy voters to render their verdict on the great “Bear” controversy, but that verdict came down clearly with the final award announced at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
“The Bear,” which had won 10 awards in January when the 75th Emmys were handed out, won another seven at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys and four more during Sunday’s show. But then, when Catherine O’Hara opened the envelope for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy that seemed all but certain to complete the FX show’s near-sweep of the comedy categories, she read the title “Hacks.”
How on earth could “The Bear” have done so well with voters and then lost the big award? What did “Hacks” have that it didn’t?
That’s easy: Humor.
Since “The Bear” first came on the air in 2022, it has been the subject of complaints...

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.

A study from Roku and the National Research Group gives terrific insight on what studios can do to boost box-office receipts.
When was the last time you went to the movies? On-demand streaming has completely changed the way that viewers interact with new releases, even in the post-covid era where streaming services do not release movies on the same day and date that they arrive in theaters. One survey from March found that only 34% of Americans preferred watching new movies in theaters, but new data from Roku and National Research Group (Nrg) shows that theaters and streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video can still coexist in a way that keeps theaters going in the long-term.
Key Details: The survey found 61% of streaming watchers say they’d prefer to see a new movie in theaters if it were released to streaming at the same time. The biggest argument for watching...

New data from Antenna shows that Prime Video plays an outsized role in distributing specialty streaming services.
Everywhere you look these days, there seems to be a new streaming bundle available. This year, viewers were introduced to the Xfinity StreamSaver bundle of Apple TV+, Netflix, and Peacock, as well as a new combination of Disney+, Hulu, and Max. The thing that these offerings have in common is that they both feature streaming services generally considered to be at the top of the market, with tens of millions of customers each and established brand identities. Smaller streaming services with more niche content offerings like Acorn TV, BET+, Crunchyroll, and more have so far been left out of the big streaming bundles, and new data from Antenna shows that platforms like Amazon’s Prime Video are having — and will continue to have — a profound effect on the distribution of such services.

Going through Amazon’s streaming service is the only way to get a free viewing window of Max.
The best things in life are free, and many streaming services offer new customers a free trial to one degree or another so they can try out a new streamer before committing to it. Max does not normally offer a free trial of its own to new customers, but it used to provide customers free viewing windows if they added the service onto their Hulu or Prime Video subscriptions. Those offers disappeared for several months in 2024, but one has now been restored; Prime Video customers now get a seven-day trial of Max if they subscribe through Prime Video Channels.
Key Details: Only existing Prime Video customers can access the seven-day trial of Max. Free trials are available for both the ad-supported and ad-free plans of Max. Customers who aren’t subscribed to...

Until the 2024 Emmy nominations were announced, the last time an Oscar-winning actress had earned TV academy recognition for a guest appearance on a comedy series was 2019, when Emma Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) battled eventual victor Jane Lynch (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). Among those in the running for the next Best Comedy Guest Actress trophy are Academy Award recipients Olivia Colman (“The Bear”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Only Murders in the Building”), all of whom further stand out from their remaining three competitors in that they are new to the category.
Said three Oscar winners are faced with the daunting challenge of defeating Emmy darling Maya Rudolph, who is seeking her third guest victory for “Saturday Night Live” following triumphs in 2020 and 2021. Also in the mix are veteran nominees Kaitlin Olson (“Hacks”) and Kristen Wiig (“Saturday Night Live”), the latter of whom lost to Rudolph three years ago.

The International Cinematographers Guild (Icg) will recognize two acclaimed professionals at award ceremonies later this year. Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto will receive the Distinguished Filmmaker Award. M. David Mullen will receive the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Mentor Award.
Prieto has worked on blockbuster films and critically-acclaimed independents. His credits range from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Prieto first found success with director Alejandro González Iñárritu in 2000s films like “Babel,” “21 Grams,” and “Amores Perros.” He has shown versatility across genres with work on movies such as “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Argo,” and “8 Mile.”
Prieto is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Paramo.” He also received a 2024 MTV Video Music Award nomination for his cinematography on a Taylor Swift music video. The Icg says Prieto represents excellence in his field.

John Waters is a beyond magnificent director and is a true auteur; let’s take a look at his work and how his “strangeness” has impacted the way we view Cinema itself. Weirdness is my schtick, and it’s my favorite aspect of the human condition. For us to consider something as “weird” is subjective; and even so, what we’re even classifying as such is subjective in itself. When I think of something as “weird” or “strange,” I lean more towards what itches my brain in that particular spot that can’t be quite reached by anything else. More or so, what itches my brain, even more, is when a film or TV show is considered “odd” in some way. There is so much power in the world of creating visual content, and achieving an emotional reaction that causes the audience to feel rather off in an exciting way that keeps us intrigued.

A new survey from Hub Research shows sports fans still think broadcast/cable channels do a better job of delivering sports than top streamers.
As cord-cutting continues to eat into cable and broadcast TV audiences, sports leagues are increasingly willing to show their biggest games on streaming services. Prime Video will take over as an NBA broadcaster in 2025, and also recently acquired the rights to a package of Monday night NHL games in Canada. Netflix will stream live NFL games for the first time in 2024, and the list goes on. A new survey from Hub Research highlights how excited fans are to be able to access sports via streaming, but also shows that broadcast and cable channels aren’t going away as top sources for sports content.
Key Details: Hub found that 24% of respondents said broadcast and cable channels do the best job of providing live sports, more than any single streamer.

Two stars from two very popular Netflix teen shows will be starring together in a new slasher for the streamer. We're talking about Outer Banks star Madison Bailey and Ginny & Georgia's Antonia Gentry. The horror movie is called Time Cut, and it's coming to Netflix this fall. The exact release date is Oct. 30, 2024, just one day before Halloween.
We first learned of this film back in May 2021. It was announced that To All the Boys producer Ace Entertainment would be making a YA movie called Time Cut and that it would star Bailey and Gentry. Hannah Macpherson was announced as the director, and Michael Kennedy and Sono Patel were revealed to be writing the script. However, Patel would later drop out of the movie, and Macpherson took over as co-writer. The film was also described as being Back to the Future (1985) meets Scream (1996).

The pledged $115 million cash infusion would have helped Diamond ensure creditors that it could emerge from bankruptcy.
Ever since March 2023, the Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy proceedings have felt like a two-steps-forward, one-step-back affair. The company saw that pattern emerge again this week; Diamond announced new deals with the NBA and NHL late on Friday that will allow the company to broadcast nine NHL teams and 13 NBA clubs for at least the 2024-25 season. That was a key win for Diamond, but on Monday, Sports Business Journal reported that Amazon was rescinding its offer of a $115 million investment to Diamond, which raises yet more questions about the long-term viability of the regional sports network (Rsn) broadcaster.
Key Details: Amazon first made the agreement with Diamond in January 2024. The deal would have seen Bally Sports channels distributed on Prime Video. Diamond is still confident in its reorg plan, even without the Amazon investment.

James Gunn’s DC universe is currently undergoing major reconstruction and reorientation with the comic universe’s mainframe being surgically fixed after the past 11 years’ worth of trauma. Among the central triarchy, Superman rises to the occasion before the rest as David Corenswet takes on the mantle passed down from the oh-so-controversial Henry Cavill.

To match James Gunn’s personal ambition, Superman is set to get a most faithful adaptation in live-action with Corenswet already building himself in the image of his comic counterpart. Meanwhile, the director and CEO of DC Studios whips out a sink-or-swim version of the studio’s new chapter that will determine whether the DC cinematic universe will survive in this era of Superhero fatigue.

It's the dawn of a new day in the DC Universe, with James Gunn's upcoming movie "Superman" introducing a new version of the titular Man of Steel, played this time around by David Corenswet. This reset is particularly important for Jimmy Olsen, the fresh-faced photojournalist and cub reporter who works alongside Clark Kent and Lois Lane at the Daily Planet. The most recent movie version of Jimmy was introduced briefly in "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" as a CIA operative (played by Michael Cassidy), only to be killed off almost immediately.
Now, through the magic of a soft franchise reboot, Jimmy will be reborn in "Superman" -- played this time around by Skyler Gisondo. To celebrate the 83rd anniversary of Jimmy Olsen's first (named) appearance in DC Comics, Gunn shared a first look of Gisondo in the role. He certainly has the perfect dimpled smile to play Jimmy,...

“The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are runaway favorites to win their second straight Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmys, respectively, next month. In isolation, that’s not really that notable after “The Bear’s” dominance the past year, but if they pull off the double again, they’d continue a recent trend: It’d be the fifth consecutive year and sixth time in the last seven years that the male comedy acting categories go to the same show.
In 2018, “Barry” swept the categories for Bill Hader and Henry Winkler, 14 years after “Frasier” was the last to achieve it with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce. The following year, Hader defended his crown, but Winkler lost the supporting trophy to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Tony Shalhoub.

Godfather of Harlem Season 4 is on the way. The MGM+ drama starring Forest Whitaker is currently in production in New York, and the series is slowly starting to share updates on what’s to come in the fourth installment. NCIS: Los Angeles alum Erik Palladino is the newest addition to the cast. After playing a fictional hitman in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Palladino will play a real-life one in Godfather of Harlem. He plays Giuseppe “Pino” Greco, per Deadline, who was a high-ranking hitman in the Sicilian mafia. Season 4 will also see Rome Flynn join the cast the infamous drug lord Frank Lucas, marking his first series since leaving Chicago Fire. Godfather of Harlem is inspired by the real-life crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker), who returned from 11 years in prison in the early 1960s to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. Exclusive: Beverly Hills-based management and production company, Underground, has bolstered its team with the addition of Aaron Folbe as Manager, Deadline has learned.
Folbe joins after a little over two years at Industry Entertainment, where he served as Lit Coordinator. In his new role, he will continue to focus on supporting and developing the careers of writers, directors, and performers.
Folbe’s new role comes shortly following a major win for his clients Adam and Daniel Cooper, who in June sold their short story “I Used To Eat Brains, Now I Eat Kale” to Amazon MGM Studios for feature development, with Ryan Gosling and his production company General Admission attached to produce. Folbe took on the Cooper twins as clients before his time at Industry Entertainment — while serving as an assistant at Artists First — and closed the deal in between his exit from that company and his Underground hire. There’s a bigger, bolder, more fascinating, and most importantly, a complete movie stuck somewhere inside Warren Fischer’s short film The Serena Variation. There’s no doubt that the twenty-eight minute short is one of a kind, and Fischer has tried to pull off something truly remarkable here. Unfortunately, he is constrained by the short film format, and the man has too much to tell. Never have I ever imagined a short film would dare to attempt breaking its narrative into six chapters, like what someone like Tarantino does. Full marks to Fischer for attempting to do something like this, but the result is not quite convincing, sadly. Imagine you’re served a ten-course meal, from starter to main course to dessert, but on a tiny plate, and you’ve got to polish it off in half an hour. That’s what watching The Serena Variation feels like. It’s way too much narration,...

Going into this year’s Emmy nominations, Mary Lou Belli figured she was unlikely to receive her third consecutive directing nomination for the BET sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show.” Emmy rules stipulate that one of the six nominations would go to a multi-camera show, the kind of live-in-front-of-a-studio-audience production that had been responsible for much of the classic comedy in the history of television. But one of the other multi-cam directors on the ballot was James Burrows, the undisputed king of the genre and by far the most nominated comedy director in Emmy history.
“I said to my friends, ‘I’m not getting it this year, it’s going to Jimmy,’” Belli said, laughing.
But to her shock, it didn’t go to Jimmy. Instead, Belli landed her third consecutive nomination for comedy directing, making her only the second woman to ever score three in a row in the category.

In 1959, New York Times critic Brooks Atkinson heralded the arrival of a new musical comedy star in Once Upon a Mattress, a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Carol Burnett, he wrote, has “a metallic voice, an ironic gleam, and an unfailing sense of the comic gesture” as she “discharges” the music “as though she were firing a field mortar.” Meanwhile, her co-star, Joe Bova, as Prince Dauntless the Drab, only received mention from Atkinson as one of several “winning young people” backing up Burnett.
Dauntless has always seemed a supporting part, inevitably overshadowed by Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, one of musical theater’s most boisterous, irrepressible heroines. But Michael Urie, playing Dauntless in the new Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress, a transfer of the Encores! production that opened in January for a two-week run at New York City Center, reveals that this...

James Gunn wrapped filming on “Superman” at the end of July, but there’s still plenty of work to be done on the 2025 comic book tentpole. Responding to fans on Threads, the writer-director said he’s not nearly finished with the movie that will kick start his new DC Universe.
“Heck no. Once you’re done shooting you’ve only just begun!” Gunn wrote in a message on Threads. “Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!”
When one follower suggested there will also be a significant time spent on reshoots, which have become something of a staple on big Hollywood tentpoles, Gunn replied with a surprising revelation: “I don’t know. I’ve done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined.”

Wokeness, gender fluidity, the audacity of ageing … Madwomen of the West is a play giving ‘women of a certain age’ a voice – and audiences are loving it. We meet two of its outspoken stars, Brooke Adams and Caroline Aaron
Brooke Adams was a huge star in her 30s after appearing alongside a brooding Richard Gere in Days of Heaven, Terrence Malick’s tragic and masterful film about farm workers. But she walked away from the business in her 40s and instead devoted herself to painting and parenting. Adams was decidedly retired. “I had quit acting,” she says.
But actor Caroline Aaron, her longtime friend, had other ideas. “I tried to bring her out of retirement,” recalls Aaron, who has notched up more than 40 years in the business, most recently playing mother-in-law Shirley in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. The season is slated to begin on October 22, but the court schedule agreed to by both parties suggests the case could drag on past that date.
The NBA and Warner Bros. Discovery were in court this week, and have agreed to a briefing schedule in Wbd’s lawsuit against the league over whether or not it fully matched an offer from Amazon for a package of national TV rights. As it stands, the case is virtually guaranteed to continue through October, and it may not wrap up before the 2024-25 NBA season begins on Oct. 22, meaning that the two sides could be actively opposing each other in court while TNT is airing NBA games.
Key Details: The NBA is expected to ask for a dismissal of the lawsuit, but that process will take several weeks. If the NBA’s motion to dismiss is denied, the case will almost certainly bleed over into the NBA season.

Quinta Brunson is turning her attention to the movies and will produce, co-write, and star in a comedy feature for Universal called “Par for the Course” that will see the “Abbott Elementary” star act alongside Stephanie Hsu.
While this isn’t Brunson’s first film acting role, its her first screenplay and major starring role. She’ll be writing the script alongside Justin Tan, who is also a writer on “Abbott Elementary,” and Tan will direct the film as his feature directorial debut.
Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures will also produce the comedy alongside Brunson, and it’s a mini reunion between the two after Brunson had a part in Rogen’s “An American Pickle.” Alex McAtee is set to produce on behalf of Point Grey under its first-look deal with Universal Pictures. Brunson is producing on behalf of her production banner Fifth Chance.

This January, “Password” presenter Keke Palmer broke new ground as the first Black woman to ever win an Emmy for hosting a game show. As the 30-year-old faces the challenge of defending her crown at September’s Creative Arts ceremony, she has the potential to make history once again as her category’s all-time youngest two-time champion.
The current Best Game Show Host lineup almost perfectly matches last year’s, with the only difference being the inclusion of Jane Lynch (“Weakest Link”) instead of the ineligible Mayim Bialik (“Jeopardy!”). The three men filling out the remaining slots are newly solo “Jeopardy!” host Ken Jennings and three-time winners Steve Harvey (“Celebrity Family Feud”) and Pat Sajak (“Wheel of Fortune”).
In order to determine if anyone can stop Palmer from establishing a streak, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 30 other...

Streaming ads are now nearly ubiquitous, but Amazon doesn’t want to overload its customers with ads during playback.
It’s hard to find a streaming service that doesn’t offer ad-supported plans these days. Of all the major services available, only Apple TV+ does not currently have a plan with ads, and even that appears to be changing. Amazon’s streamer Prime Video introduced its ad plan at the end of January, and executives spoke about its success during Amazon’s conference call to discuss its quarterly earnings report on Thursday.
Key Details: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the call he aims to deliver “meaningfully fewer” ads on Prime Video. The Streamable’s tests in January showed that Prime Video only offered two ads per episode, and none during playback. Most streamers offer four to five minutes of ads per hour, markedly fewer than are found on linear TV.
