Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Yasmin Finney, who plays fan-favorite Elle Argent on Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” will play a character named Rose on “Doctor Who,” BBC announced Monday. She will first appear in 2023, which will be the 60th anniversary of the cult sci-fi series.
Is she playing a version of Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, who was a companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant), or an entirely different character who also happens to be named Rose? Showrunner Russell T. Davies says we’ll have to wait to find that out.
“How can there be another Rose?” Davies said in a statement. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the ‘Doctor Who’ set. We all fell in love with her in ‘Heartstopper,’ one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Twin screenwriters Aaron and Jordan Kandell have sold an original comedy pitch to Robert Zemeckis’ production company ImageMovers. The project is in early discussions with Apple Studios as a distribution partner, sources said.
Zemeckis will develop and produce the film, titled “Mr. Lucky,” which sources compared to emotional and comedic romps like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
The film, inspired by a true story, is described as a high concept rom-com that explores luck, and how tragedy and triumph, disaster and fortune are all in the way we choose to view them. Jack Rapke and Jackie Levine are producing for ImageMovers.
The Kandells, who just signed with Range Media Partners, are the writers behind the Oscar-nominated Disney pic “Moana” and the 2018 film “Adrift,” starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. They have a number of notable upcoming projects through their banner Twin Ink.

Like many of its counterparts worldwide, the Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival (Ficg), Mexico’s largest film festival, faced the quandary of whether to go online, reschedule or cancel altogether because of the pandemic.
It opted for a rescheduled hybrid 35th edition which would serve those either unable or afraid to travel and those without an internet connection in Mexico.
“We struck a deal with Canal 44 to have them air some of our films,” said festival director Estrella Araiza, who is adamant that despite the challenges and complications, the film community will prevail in the end. “We have to believe in cinema,” she declared. Outdoor screenings and restricted indoor cinema screenings are on the schedule while most of the master classes and conferences are online.
Ficg was pushed from its traditional March dates to the fall, where it’s now been running over Nov. 20-27.
Its inauguration on Friday Nov.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Witches in the Woods, director Jordan Barker reflects on the challenges of filming in sub-zero temperatures and the time-bending ambitions of his next film…
Why did you respond so strongly to Christopher Borell’s script (originally titled Stranded) – because it mixed an age-old witch hunt tale with up-to-the-minute contemporary issues of sexual harassment?
Hi All and hope everyone is staying safe and sane during these very strange times. Borrelli’s script spoke to me on many levels. I felt it took a contemporary look at what it means to live in our post truth world; how our realities are shaped by the lens through by which we choose to observe. To me the film was summed up by nothing being more terrifying than being possessed, not necessarily by a vicious evil demon, but instead by an idea.

It’s kind of funny that, just a few years ago, Frank Grillo was in “The Purge: Anarchy,” in which he struggled to survive the night against morally corrupt civilians with a 12-hour license to kill, and now he’s playing a cop tripping off a limitless authority to murder in “Black and Blue.” It’s this same professional-pedestrian throughline to violence that is a major theme in this prosaic police drama from director Deon Taylor (“The Intruder”).
Corrupt cop narratives aren’t exactly fresh on screen, and Taylor’s film doesn’t shy away from blatant callbacks to other more innovative entries in the genre. For instance, composer Geoff Zanelli (“Traffik”) uses a piece that recalls the thunderous “Sicario” score, while Taylor and screenwriter Peter A. Dowling (“Flightplan”) borrow from the classic bloody bathtub scene from “Training Day.”
But Taylor tries to do the now-inevitable filmmaker exercise of infusing...

"I'm feeling all this stuff that we can't really share with anybody." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie small town drama titled Cold Brook, which is also the feature directorial debut of actor William Fichtner. Two ordinary guys in a small town embark on an extraordinary adventure and risk everything for a stranger in need. This hasn't shown up anywhere else, but is getting a VOD release next month for anyone curious about this. Fichtner most recently appeared in Finding Steve McQueen, Traffik, and 12 Strong. Cold Brook also stars Fichtner, along with Kim Coates, Harold Perrineau, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Brad William Henke, Charlene Amoia, Johnny Strong, Erich Anderson, plus Robin Weigert. Well this definitely looks like a quaint small town adventure, a rather heartfelt tale of goodness. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for William Fichtner's Cold Brook, direct from Vertical's YouTube: Cold Brook is...

Coming this fall and directed by the indefatigable Deon Taylor, the filmmaker is having quite the year. Between 2018 and 2019, he’s made three films: “Traffik,” “The Intruder,” and his upcoming crime thriller “Black and Blue” which just released its first trailer tonight. I’m not sure what kind of steroids he’s on, but according to IMDb, Taylor also has three more films in post-production: “The House Next Door,” “Fatale” and “Akuma.” Taylor apparently doesn’t sleep.

Philanthropist Robert F. Smith delivered a life-changing commencement speech Sunday at Morehouse College in Atlanta.
The billionaire businessman, who received an honorary degree from the historically black school, surprised the nearly 400 graduating seniors by announcing his family would provide a grant to pay off student debt for the entire Class of 2019.
“On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus,” Smith said in a video posted on social media.
“This is my class,” he added, “and I know my class will pay this forward.”

The gift to the private, all-male school is said to be worth about $40 million. It comes in addition to a $1.5 million donation Smith gave Morehouse earlier this year for scholarships and a new park.
Some students told the Atlanta Journal Constitution they were graduating with around $90,000 in debt.

No film has ever dominated business on its second weekend as much as Marvel/Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame.” After a staggering 89% share on weekend one –notching an all-time record $357 million domestic gross — “Endgame” came roaring back with a sophomore weekend initial estimate of $146 million.
That marked an astonishing 74% of the weekend’s total gross, even with a 59% drop from last weekend and three new wide releases (no other studio film bothered to open against the Marvel onslaught last week). For a film making a full-on assault on records (some of which don’t need pretending constancy in ticket prices), this is one of its most impressive yet. That’s the best second weekend share ever.
This “Endgame” gross did not set the biggest second weekend record. With adjusted numbers, that remains “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $154.5 million ($149 million in 2015 dollars). But that movie boasted the best possible date for...

The Intruder is mostly listless, scare-free nonsense, but an entertaining performance from Dennis Quaid manages to give the film a pulse, elevating this clichéd, implausible thriller into something watchable. When successful young married couple Annie and Scott (Meagan Good and Michael Ealy) buys their dream house, a lavish woodsy estate in the tranquility of Napa Valley, they think they have found the perfect home to take their next steps as a family. The price is $3.5M, but the current owner Charlie (Dennis Quaid – introduced shooting a deer right in front of them) likes them so knocks the price down to $3.3 and throws in his late wife’s tapestries. Annie and Scott are thrilled, but when Charlie shows up mowing the grass a couple of days after the move and works hard to make himself part of their lives, they begin to realize he may have hidden motivations beyond a quick sale.

A contrived and cliché-stuffed thriller such as “The Intruder” often forces me to suppress an urgent desire to shout rude things at the screen. So I must confess that I had a great time watching this very bad movie as a member of a very vocal preview audience that had been given carte blanche to provide full-throated running commentary.
The PR wizards had alerted the invitees: “For this screening, we are encouraging the audience to ‘watch out loud.’ Feel free to vocalize your reactions as loudly as you want while you watch!” No, really. Judging from how frequently folks seated nearby offered scornful groans, snarky observations and insulting appraisals of the characters’ intelligence, this was pretty much exactly the right place at precisely the right time to derive maximum enjoyment from this particular communal experience.
Your mileage, however, may vary.

If there’s one comic-book adaptation I’m excited for much more than Any others it’s the forthcoming Amazon Studios TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys – which still ranks as one of my favourite series of all time.
Set to debut on Amazon Prime in 2019, this iteration of The Boys stars Karl Urban (Thor: Ragnarok), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games), Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), Laz Alonso (Traffik), Antony Starr (American Gothic), Dominique McElligott (The Last Tycoon), Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Erin Moriarty (True Detective), Jessie T. Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas) and Nathan Mitchell (iZombie).
Just check out the first poster for the show below, which captures the look of the first graphic novel of The Boys I ever read – making me even more certain that (especially thanks to a lack of censorship on streaming services) we’ll get a...
