While talking to “Saturday Night Live” veterans David Spade and Dana Carvey on their “Fly on the Wall” podcast, comedian Punkie Johnson discussed her decision to leave “SNL” ahead of its 50th season.
Johnson revealed she began doubting her role on the prolific sketch comedy show before Season 49. “I talked to my team. I was like, ‘Look, I don’t really know if I belong at this job, so maybe I should step away,’” Johnson said. “But I told them super, super late, like right after I found out I got to go back. And it was like ‘Well Punkie, you need a plan. You can’t just quit your job.'”
Johnson decided to remain as a cast member for Season 49, and said for the first couple of weeks, things were “tremendous.”

Channel 4 Bonuses Are “Slap In The Face” For Fired Staffers & Ailing Freelance Workforce, Bectu Says
“A slap in the face” was the verdict of broadcasting union Bectu to Channel 4 bosses’ decision to accept bonuses this year amidst a 250-staff layoff program.
Deadline revealed yesterday that the network’s CEO Alex Mahon, content boss Ian Katz and Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Allan would be taking their bonuses in 2024, although at reduced rates.
Responding, Bectu Head Philippa Childs pointed to the optics of the bonuses being taken at a time when freelance community morale is at an all-time low. Channel 4’s Remuneration Committee would have rubberstamped the bonuses around the time the broadcaster began implementing a 250-staff layoff program, which is seeing commissioning teams shrunk back amidst tricky economic headwinds and a slowdown in commissioning.
“Hot on the heels of recent announcements of mass redundancies at the broadcaster, this will come as a slap in the face to both those at risk of redundancy and the...

Chicago –At the the just wrapped up Fall 2023 Chicago Humanities Festival, a few laughs (and tears) were had at an appearance by comedian Aparna Nancherla. She has a new book entitled “Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself and the Imposter Syndrome,” which takes readers on the journey of a stand-up comic and essayist who doesn’t feel she belongs doing what she does, but she’s able to express it.
’Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself and the Imposter Syndrome’ by Aparna Nancherla

“Unreliable Narrator” is a collection of essays that uses Aparna’s signature humor to illuminate an interior life, one constantly bossed around by her depression (whom she calls Brenda), laced with anxiety described like a horror movie full of jump-scares, and plagued by a love-hate relationship with her career as a painfully shy standup comedian. But that crippling self-doubt also comes with the gift of keen self-examination.

Netflix was left out of an annual index of corporations’ inclusive policies and practices for LGBTQ+ workers, as the Hrc Foundation cited how the company handled the release of the Dave Chappelle special The Closer.
The Corporate Equality Index is an annual rating of hundreds of companies.
“Given the harm experienced by transgender workers at Netflix as a result of the company’s handling of the release of The Closer, Hrc has suspended Netflix’s Corporate Equality Index score and will not be rewarding it with a ‘Best Places to Work’ distinction in the 2022 Cei,” Hrc said in the report. “Hrc and Netflix are having productive conversations about steps the company could take to demonstrate it is acting in a manner consistent with the values of workplace equality an inclusion and to improve trust among their employees and the public.”
But a Netflix spokesperson said that they “respectfully disagree with Hrc’s decision.

“Saturday Night Live” has tapped Jim Carrey to play Democratic presidential candidate and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden as the show gears up to put a satirical touch on the run up to Election Day – typically one of the series’ most influential periods.
Carrey gets a role that has been played by others in recent years. Former “SNL” cast member Jason Sudeikis played an affable, loud-talking version of Biden in past seasons, and Woody Harelson took on Biden duties as the show lampooned recently Democratic primary debates.
NBC plans to launch the 46th season of “Saturday Night Live” on October 3, the start of five consecutive broadcasts of the program. The show is planning to have a limited in-studio audience at Rockefeller Center for the upcoming season, and will work with authorities to stay abreast of health and safety concerns.

The show had been renewed for a seventh season last year and was in pre-production on that season when the Covid-19 pandemic forced production to stop in March. Later on, Comedy Central decided to pull the plug on the show as the network moves away from live-actions scripted shows in favor of adult animation.
Series creators Derek Waters signed a first-look deal with Comedy Central at the time of the Season 7 renewal and will continue to develop projects at the network.
