Featured review
"Kaiju Mono" (aka "Daikaijû mono") is a wonderful tribute to the classic "Godzilla" movies and everything in the kaiju genre. However, the movie does break over a threshold where it becomes more stupid than entertaining.
And by that I mean, the fact that they turn a geeky scientist into a gargantuan muscular man to fight the kaiju that has come to Japan to reclaim its lost egg. Not only does he turn into a giant, but he also becomes a whole different person - both in appearance and demeanor. (They even changed the actor for him, twice). That was just a bitter pill to swallow.
Aside from that, then "Kaiju Mono" was actually entertaining, because it was goofy enough to be funny without it slipping fully into being a comedy, and it also had the same goofy special effects as seen in the old "Godzilla" movies - such as toy tanks, lousy fireworks, obvious toy cars parked near toy buildings. But since this was intentional, it was very much in the spirit of paying homage to the old, classic "Godzilla" movies. And I enjoyed that. However, if you are not a fan of those old movies, then you will not enjoy that aspect of the movie.
The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration the extends of the script and storyline. However, don't go expecting a Shakespearian experience here.
"Kaiju Mono" was actually adequately entertaining for what it turned out to be. But hardly a movie you will watch more than once.
