- Travelling to the Arctic for the first time, Carmen arrives in Iqaluit to tend to her husband, Gilles, a construction worker who has been seriously injured. Trying to get to the bottom of what happened, she strikes up a friendship with Noah, Gilles' Inuk friend, and realizes they share a similar story. Together, Carmen and Noah head out on the Frobisher Bay - she, looking for answers to her questions; he, trying to stop his son from committing what can't be undone.
- Carmen rushes to Iqaluit from her home in Montréal upon news that her husband of twenty years Gilles, who owns and operates a construction company there, Iqaluit where he lives for half the year, is in the hospital, he having sustained a serious head injury and is currently unconscious. This trip marks Carmen's first time in the territory, she never having accepted Gilles' invitations. Beyond Gilles' medical situation, Carmen will learn that the police received an anonymous telephone call informing them about Gilles, his unconscious body found in a middle of a field which he and others often use as a shortcut, and that "unofficially" they will not be following up in such anonymous calls being standard in the Inuk not trusting the western police. When not at the hospital, Carmen is staying in Gilles' bedroom in a house he shares with his business partner, Victor, a fellow "southerner" who is to act as the touchstone to Gilles' life in Iqaluit and hopefully discovery of how he sustained his injury, she learning that he was at the bar that night and was probably on his way home. After her official stay, Carmen decides to stay unofficially to investigate on her own. In the process, she befriends Noah, an Inuk who not only worked for Gilles, but considered him a friend. Partly through Noah, Carmen will learn more about Gilles' life in Iqaluit than she bargained for.—Huggo
