Sam's costume for the film was not decided until the first day of filming in New York. While stopping for pizza they tried multiple different hats and sunglasses before deciding on the final look.
There are multiple references to New York based musicians throughout the film including; (Matt & Kim) Characters putting on clothes in slow motion walking down the street, a reverse of the Matt & Kim music video "Lessons Learned". (Hail Mary Mallon) the line "...traded his jalopy for a nickel bag of fake bud" is a reference to the Hail Mary Mallon song "Grubstake"
Upon returning from NYC, the cast and crew had trouble retrieving their car from a parking garage at 4am in the morning. (They thought is was 24hr, it was not.) When they attempted to remove the car from the premises they were confronted by local law enforcement.
Sam's final line is an altered version of the Hellen Keller quote; "It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal."
The red BMW in the background of the first scene makes an appearance in many NTFC films.
