The filmmaker Edgar Pêra always use creative orthography in his filmes, but his motherland is so traditional about language that it was never released, presented or even written correctly the name of the movie. Instead, the media, the movie theaters, festivals and even now the streaming services use either the grammatically-correct Caminhos Magnéticos, either something in between the title (Caminhos Magnétykos). Besides of the lack of aesthetic comprehension, that happens specially because, as a colonizer, Portugal actually doesn't accept the Portuguese language spoken in other countries (ex-Portuguese territory) and even don't even follow the general orthographic rules for unification of the use of the language in all it's countries - that are accorded from time to time with all the Portuguese speaking countries, including Portugal. The absurd in this is that they start to be so radical about that, creating an actual misspelling - and maybe even impolite towards the filmmaker - and loose much of the poetic subtleness of the work of Pêra.
The director sought once again the writing of Branquinho da Fonseca (1905-1974), from where he took Rio Turvo (2007) and O Barão (2011).
Was filmed between Lisbon and the historical Guimarães.
Edgar Pêra and producer Rodrigo Areias (Bando À Parte) chose Dominique Pinon for the leading because he was a great theater actor, not because he's one of the most iconic faces of French Cinema. "We started by looking for an Argentine actor" (Ricardo Darín's name was even considered), "because of the fact that Branquinho da Fonseca's tale takes place in that country. But then we came to the conclusion that the important thing was that he was just a foreigner. And Dominique Pinon is also a great theater actor, with great resourcefulness, and as the character speaks a lot in monologues, I knew he would be perfect for the film", explains Pêra. Rodrigo Areias adds that he also felt this evidence when, at a session in Venice, he saw Pinon as the protagonist of a short film, Ferdinand Knapp (Andrea Baldini, 2014) which, by the way, would earn him an acting award. "I left the room and immediately called Edgar Pêra: "I've already found the actor for your film" ".
Ricardo Darín was a first option for the leading role.
