Exclusive: Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, has a new television thriller.

British pay broadcaster Sky has ordered Prisoner with Charman set to write and serve as showrunner. The series will be produced by Charman’s own production company Binocular Productions, which was the company behind Netflix spy series Treason.

The series is a relationship drama that dives into what a serial killer can teach an ordinary person about what it takes to survive in his world. Casting is underway. It is expected to shoot next year.

Charman is best known for his film work, which also includes Amazon original Killer Heat, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden and Oasis, which also starred Madden alongside Anil Kapoor. Two of Batman’s most popular foes, Bane and Deathstroke, are set to share the screen as Warner Bros’ new look DC Universe continues to take shape.

Both Bane and Deathstroke have graced cinema screens before. When it comes to the comic books, the duo are among the more beloved members of Batman’s colourful cast of villains, and it looks like that popularity has led to a supervillain team-up movie that will introduce the characters to James Gunn’s all-new DC Universe.

Next year will see Warner Bros’ new line of DC movies kick off with Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn himself. Following that, a string of films have been announced including a Batman movie, The Brave And The Bold and Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. Then there are planned TV shows such as HBO’s Lanterns, a space cop series that will feature the Green Lantern corps.

Villains really are the new superheroes.

DC Studios has tapped screenwriter Matthew Orton (“Captain America: Brave New World”) to write a feature film that will involve Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke, Variety has confirmed. The project is still in its infancy: There are no stars or director attached, and DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have been clear that they will not greenlight a project until they are satisfied with a complete screenplay.

The movie follows a growing trend in the superhero space of projects focusing as much on the villains as on the heroes, from the ongoing HBO series “The Penguin” and Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” to Warner Bros. upcoming sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” and Sony’s upcoming Marvel adaptations “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter.”

With a big-budget Joker movie just weeks away and a Penguin HBO series freshly unveiled, a few other DC villains are being targeted for the spotlight.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Bane, the super-steroid injecting antagonist who was previously seen in the 2012 Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight Rises, and Deathstroke, another popular archnemesis in the comic book company’s fold, are being lassoed together for a movie. The James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios is developing a script from Matthew Orton, a scribe on the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie.

By the time that date rolled around, the movie had been given the new title Afraid (or AfrAId)… and neither the new title nor the new release date worked out for the movie at the box office, because it only ended up making $9 million at the global box office. Hal, that sentient computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, has a lot to answer for, not least the flood of lesser demon-computer movies that have followed in the decades since.

Afraid, about a family whose experimental home assistant is like an Alexa device’s evil twin, is the latest to use artificial intelligence as the villain, but the stakes are higher today, with AI a real, immanent threat. Just ask the actors, voice actors and screenwriters fearful that AI will take over their jobs. Chris Weitz (most famously About a Boy and most recently Operation Finale) works hard to make Afraid a smarter-than-average horror movie, but the effort is conspicuous, and in the end the film is bland and obvious. And if horror can’t make us feel frightened in a way we couldn’t imagine ourselves, why bother?

Weitz did have the good judgment to cast John Cho in the lead.

“The Terror” Season 3 has rounded out its main cast, Variety has learned.

A dozen actors have now joined previously announced lead Dan Stevens in the new season, which is officially titled “The Terror: Devil in Silver.” It is based on the novel “The Devil in Silver” written by Victor Lavalle.

Sony Pictures has debuted the brand new trailer for Afraid, an upcoming sci-fi horror film from Academy Award-nominated writer/director Chris Weitz (Operation Finale; About a Boy; American Pie) that introduces a whole new kind of terror to the world with Aia, who is basically a Siri-like family assistant that takes her job way, way too seriously.

The film's synopsis reveals, "Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called Aia. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, Aia seems able to do it all. She learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way."

John Cho begins to regret using an AI device to keep his loved ones safe in the first trailer for the thriller feature Afraid.

Sony released the trailer Wednesday for writer-director Chris Weitz’s film that hits theaters Aug. 30 and was formerly known by the title They Listen. Hailing from Columbia Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, Afraid centers on Curtis (Cho), whose household is selected to test a groundbreaking digital family assistant called Aia. However, the family soon realizes that Aia might have become a bit too attached to them.

“I’m not crazy about having them everywhere,” Curtis’ wife (Katherine Waterston) says in the trailer about all the cameras and sensors being set up in their home.

Later, Cho warns, “There is something very wrong with Aia.” He adds, “Get out of the house, now.”

Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Lukita Maxwell, Keith Carradine and Riki Lindhome round out the cast of Afraid.

With reshoots ongoing on Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, a ton of new set photos have been surfacing online over the past few days and the latest batch reveals star Anthony Mackie ("Sam Wilson/Captain America") suited up in his classic white-and-blue suit from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, essentially reaffirming that he'll be sporting multiple looks in the eagerly-awaited Marvel blockbuster.

As per a recent report, the additional photography isn't expected to be particularly extensive, and should conclude within another week or two. New action sequences were expected to be added, so based on what we're seeing in these photos, it looks like they might be shooting a new opening for the film, where Mackie sports his first Captain America suit.

Penned by Moon Knight scribe Matthew Orton, the big-budget five-episode thriller is based on a hit 2004 novel by Deon Meyer and is produced by Happy Valley maker Lookout Point and Expanded Media Productions in association with MultiChoice Studios and BBC Studios. It launched last year locally on South Africa’s M-Net and BBC Studios sells around the world.

Starring Hilton Pelser, the series follows Detective Benny Griessel, who is tasked with tracking down a vigilante killer whose crimes are capturing the imagination of the city. As he gets closer to his mark, Griessel finds himself drawn into a dark and dangerous world where nothing is what it seems.

The sibling duo of Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) are writing, directing, and executive producing Murderbot under their Depth of Field banner. Amidst these challenges, the fourth installment in the Captain America series, ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ encountered issues not directly linked to the strike.

Marvel Studios is trying to recover from its current run of bad luck. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a bright spot for the brand, the underperformance of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the low ratings for Secret Invasion, the Jonathan Majors controversy, the Daredevil: Born Again overhaul, and the low box office of The Marvels, the year showing the studio juggernaut in a vulnerability it hasn’t found itself in before. In fact, the behind-the-scenes drama used to be an ongoing issue at its comic rival, DC at Warner Bros. It was even reported last month that Anthony Mackie’s promotion to Captain America with Captain America: Brave New World was having poor test screenings and had planned some reshoots to fix whatever wasn’t working.

Deadline is now reporting that Captain America: Brave New World has hired a new writer to help punch up some scenes.

Lior Raz has joined the frontlines in Israel to help the innocent victims amid attacks by Hamas forces.

The 51-year-old actor is the star of the Netflix series Fauda and is known as the “Israeli James Bond” for his work in the action thriller.

Lior took to social media on Monday (October 9) to reveal that he is volunteering to assist amid the violence happening in Israel.

Israeli drama “Fauda” is returning for a fifth season, Variety can confirm.

Ilan Sigal, CEO of Israeli network Yes, revealed the news earlier this week, according to the Jerusalem Post. The newspaper reported that Sigal appeared alongside the show’s co-creator, Avi Issacharoff, at Yes’s annual “Bar Series” event to share the news.

Netflix streams “Fauda” internationally. The fourth season of the show, which was also meant to be the last, released earlier this year.

According to Israeli publication Ynet, “Fauda” was picked up for a fifth season following protracted negotiations between the network and the creators. No details have been confirmed in terms of the season’s plot or when it might air.

Issacharoff, an Israeli journalist, developed the hit series alongside the show’s star Lior Raz almost 10 years ago. It first premiered in 2015, telling the story of Doron (played by Raz), a commander in the Israeli army.

Exclusive: Paramount’s sequel to the Oscar-winning hit Gladiator is rounding out its cast as sources tell Deadline the untitled pic has added May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas.

Also in talks to join the remaining cast is Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), who is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta. Barry Keoghan was in negotiations to play the Geta character, but scheduling conflicts forced him to fall out of the project.

The newest cast members join the previously announced ensemble that includes Paul Mescal in the titular role, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen. Like Nielsen, who will be reprising her role as Lucilla, Jacobi will also be one of the few legacy players returning from original, reprising his role as Gracchus. Ridley Scott is back to direct, with David Scarpa penning the script.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.

They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.

Apple has unveiled the first images from the upcoming limited series “The Crowded Room,” starring and executive produced by Tom Holland.

The show, created by Oscar-winning executive producer Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind”), also stars Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum. The first three episodes out of 10 premiere Friday, June 9, 2023, with the rest rolling out weekly until July 28.

“The Crowded Room” follows Danny Sullivan (Holland), a man arrested for his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. Through interviews with interrogator Rya Goodwin (Seyfried), viewers learn Sullivan’s life story. His mysterious past comes into play, and some twists and turns lead him to a life-changing revelation. The psychological thriller is set in Manhattan, and Goodwin is tasked with solving the mystery behind Sullivan’s behavior.

Sir Ben Kingsley, 79, has one foot planted in Beverly Hills, the other in Oxfordshire, England — nearly 200 miles southeast of his native Lancashire, where he was raised by his British model and actress mom and his father, a Kenyan-born family doctor of Indian descent.

Eichmann was the "architect of the Final Solution," a leader who organized and managed the mass deportation and deaths of the Jewish people in concentration camps during World War II.

Exclusive: Blumhouse/Sony/Depth of Field’s They Listen has added Greg Hill to the Chris Weitz written and directed feature. The pic reps Hill’s second collaboration with director Weitz, having worked with him on MGM’s post-World War II thriller Operation Finale, as part of the ensemble cast that included Oscar Isaac, Ben Kingsley, Melanie Laurent and Nick Kroll.

Netflix and Jason Bateman will continue collaborating after the mega success of Ozark, Bateman’s gritty thriller series about a Missouri family of money launderers swept into the drug trade. According to Deadline, Bateman will direct Dark Wire, an FBI surveillance thriller based on Wired journalist Joseph Cox’s upcoming book. Bateman will also produce with Michael Costigan through Aggregate Films, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine of 21 Laps.

Based on actual events, Dark Wire revolves around how the FBI established a fake telecom company and posed as a phone service provider to listen in on one of the world’s most infamous gangs. The setup arrested a thousand international criminals, making the sting one for the history books. Matthew Orton is in charge of adapting the story, with Tracey Nyberg executive producing.

Since Arrested Development took the comedy world by storm, Bateman is always up to something new.

Netflix has acquired the rights to an upcoming book called “Dark Wire” about a true story of FBI surveillance, and the streamer has tapped “Ozark” star Jason Bateman to direct and produce a film based on the book.

Bateman will team with “Stranger Things” producer Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner on an adaptation of the film, while Matthew Orton (“Operation Finale”) will write the screenplay.

The book “Dark Wire” comes from journalist Joseph Cox, who has written for Wired and Vice Motherboard, among others. Cox announced the project on his personal Twitter last month and explained it examines “one of the craziest law enforcement stings ever,” in which the FBI launched their own phone company in order to track underground crime organizations.
