Originally, we're supposed to do a basic Kickstarter video and capture some small-scale making of footage, but we soon realized that there was a bigger story to
be told. However, we didn't really expect that we would go on a three-year-long journey.
No, while the film shows the development of Nex Machina from the first meeting to the release, we focused on a few people making the game instead of the
actual everyday programming and company meetings.
Around 200 hours of video, and much more in audio.
At first, every single detail feels essential, but as time goes by, you kind of forget all the minor things that have been cut. In the end, the audience only sees the
finished version of the film so they don't know if there is a good joke missing from a scene.
We filmed a huge amount footage of a lot of people working on the game, but unfortunately we can't fit all that in a 90 minutes long documentary. We had to cut a lot of characters from the edit, but on the other hand, we were able to tell a better story that way. Maybe we release an extended cut one day?
We concentrate on creative people working hard, and partying even harder. There is an obvious connection with the lifestyles of video game creators and a rock'n
roll lifestyle. We were fortunate to have an unlimited access to the ups and downs of the lives of these video game rock stars.
This is just one story out of many. Company culture plays a large part, but the Finnish mentality is certainly there, even though some of our main characters come from different countries. The video game industry is a really risky business which can definitely be seen in the film.
