- One of the city's last decent tow truck drivers risks everything on a desperate quest to become king of the road and provide for his struggling family.
- Ben and Avery Dankert used what little money they had - Ben's inheritance - to move to Toronto to get away from a toxic family environment. Working as a tow truck driver, specifically in bylaw (i.e. towing illegally parked cars) for Jackrabbit Towing Services, and a cook in a diner respectively, they are unable to make ends meets let alone provide the little extras for their adolescent son Zach, who is continually taunted by classmates as white trash. These jobs are meant as a means to an end, Ben who wants to open his own garage, and Avery who wants to open her own restaurant. While she knows how to cook, Avery is unable to get any better job without culinary training, schooling which they can't afford. Things get even more difficult when Ben's unscrupulous boss, Bissey, institutes a new policy on the brink of Jackrabbit imminently being awarded the lucrative police contract: all drivers must lease the trucks from him, first and last month's payment due immediately. Feeling like the police contract is what will get them out of their financial bind, Ben, on the recommendation of his best friend from high school Sean who also works as a tow truck driver for Jackrabbit, gets the money from a loan shark, Ray, who works in his day job as a police constable. The financial windfall from the police contract does not materialize as quickly as Ben requires to pay back Ray, which places not only Ben, Avery and Zach's life as a family at risk, but also their lives in their entirety. Ben, who generally operates on morals, has to decide if he should try to break-into the cutthroat but more lucrative world of the chasers - tow truck drivers who monitor the police frequency for accident scenes - chasers who generally have no morals, Ben finding including Sean who has his own ulterior motives, but also the two he sees on the road at nights more often than not, Wayne and Elvis. Even if he wants, Ben will find that becoming a chaser is easier said than done.—Huggo
- Ben Dankert (Brian J. Smith), a tow truck driver, comes upon an accident between truck and bicycle. Ben offers his assistance when another tow truck arrives. Elvis (Shaun Benson), the rival driver, offers the truck driver in the accident to blame the cyclist for the accident. Elvis claims the cyclist is in bad shape. Ben tells the truck driver to use Sean (Aaron Ashmore), a tow truck driver from Jackrabbit towing, who Ben believes will give him an honest deal. Later, Ben stops at dispatch and turns in just one slip because he was detained by police for his 911 call on the accident. Ben and Avery Dankert (Tiio Horn) used what little money they had, Ben's inheritance, to move to Toronto to get away from a toxic family environment. Working as a tow truck driver, specifically in bylaw (towing illegally parked cars) for Jackrabbit Towing Services, and a cook in a diner respectively, they are unable to make ends meets let alone provide the little extras for their son Zach (Jack Fulton), who is continually taunted by classmates as white trash and gets into fights. Ben promises Zach a $300 bicycle for his birthday is he can curtail the violence and be a man of character like Ben's father. Ben and Avery's jobs are meant as a means to an end. Ben wants to open his own garage, and Avery who wants to go to culinary school and open her own restaurant. While she knows how to cook, Avery is unable to get any better job without culinary training, schooling which they can't afford. On the street, Ben runs into Indian named Wayne (Raoul Trujillo) who is a "chaser" at an intersection. Wayne describes how much money he makes taking an accident to a dealership outside the city. Wayne claims he is so busy he needs two trucks. Ben visits wife Avery at the restaurant. She complains about the cost of Zach's bike and a lack of money to even buy food. Ben returns to the dispatch office. Ben's unscrupulous boss, Bissey,(John Kapelos) institutes a new policy on the brink of Jackrabbit imminently being awarded the lucrative police contract: all drivers must lease the trucks from him, first and last month's payment due immediately. Bissey is now making drivers lease their trucks from the company or they will be terminated. Feeling like the police contract is what will get them out of their financial bind, Ben, on the recommendation of his best friend from high school Sean who also works as a tow truck driver for Jackrabbit, gets the money from a loan shark, Ray (Aidan Devine), who works in his day job as a police constable. Ray loans Ben $5000 but Ben must repay $750 per week until $6000 is paid. When Ben returns to his job, a woman drives her vehicle off the tow and flies Ben the finger The following week, Ben is late on his first payment to Ray. Ray begins to charge him additional interest. Sean shows Zach the emergency scanners in his truck. Zach calls the chasers pigs because he has been taught the chaser are unscrupulous. Sean offers to help Avery out. He seems to have an interest in Avery and a desire to belittle high school hockey star Ben. When Ben gets his paycheck for the week, he is behind on his truck, so the company has deducted his payment due for his truck lease from his paycheck. The financial windfall from the police contract does not materialize quickly. Ray stops by Avery's diner and tells her to call her husband. Ray demands that Avery tell her husband that Ray really wants his money. Zach goes another week without fighting and is well on his way to earning the promise bicycle. Ben asks his boss for an advance and is soundingly rejected. Ray meets Ben outside the office and slams Ben's wrist in the truck door breaking his wrist. Arriving home, Ben finds Sean there eating potato soup. Ben agrees to loan the couple the money and makes advances on Avery. Ben, in a cast, tells Avery if she takes a dime from Sean, they are done as a couple. Ben, who generally operates on morals, decides to try to break-into the cutthroat but more lucrative world of the chasers - tow truck drivers who monitor the police frequency for accident scenes. Chasers generally have no morals. Ray heists Sean's scanners from his rig and joins the chasers for the night of work. He alerts Wayne he is working on his turf short term. Elvis pulls up shortly after. An emergency call sends all three drivers into a high-speed chase. Ben stops to help a homeless woman who crossed the street in from of him and is beaten to the accident site. One job Ben is able to find is to haul a car containing a transvestite prostitute and his client who has a kink earning $100. Elvis brags to Wayne his new tires on his rig are like a sexual experience. Ray picks up son from the sitters and learns Zach invited Kamal who bullies him to his birthday party the next day in order to be friends. Ben is proud. Avery is angry when Ben picks her up at the diner. She states that Ben is acting crazy trying to keep his promise to his kid. Another emergency call has Ben, Wayne and Elvis again racing to the accident site. Ray's first instinct is to help the accident victim that was on the street. Then realize he needs to sell his service which he does with kindness and integrity which costs Elvis a fare. When Ben gets the car to Kaleb's (Wole Daramola) body shop, Kaleb doesn't pay Ben the kickback he expects. Kaleb suggests taking the woman who owns the car to a physio clinic who also pays points to tow truck drivers. Elvis arrives and beats Ben and takes his $200 plus $20 for his time and gas as Wayne watches. Ben meets with Ray to negotiate for more time. He witnesses Ray severely injure a man who wasn't good for the money he borrowed. Ben comes to realize that not only his own life, but that of Avery and Zach are at risk. Avery meets Sean in his car. Sean has picked up some party supplies and gives Avery money to get Ray off his back. Sean makes moves on Avery that she initially fights off. Sean persists by bringing up the money he will loan her and not request repayment. Ben is at home when Avery arrives and tells her they need to jump on a bus and head out west. Avery says she will not comply. When Ben asks if she will stay for Sean, she admits she could have solved their problems by sleeping with Sean but she could not. Avery suggests she could go home with Zach to her mother's house but Ben would not be welcome. Zach overhears and is troubled. Then sees his father has been in a fight and calls Ben a liar. Now highly motivated, Ben drives some nails in a table leg and hits the road. He travels to where Wayne and Elvis are parked. With the spikes, he punctures Elvis's tires on his rig and sprays an aerosol in Elvis's eyes when Elvis approaches to get revenge. An accident report is broadcast over the scanner and Ben races Wayne to the site. Ben gets the lead in the race when Wayne's truck is suddenly t-boned by a taxi cab. One of the cab passengers runs away. In his truck cab, Wayne is near death. Ben dials 911 on his phone, leaves it on the dashboard, but then takes off to the other accident site. He takes a high prices sports car to Kaleb who pays him a large kickback on repairs. Leaving the body shop, Ben calls Binnie's wife, Rhonda (Sonya Côté). She agrees to sign off on his truck title and he takes her to a place where Binnie is having an affair. Ben meets Ray at dawn and pays off his loan. Ray tells Ben that the passenger of the taxi saw a Jackrabbit truck at the accident. Ben offers Ray a chance to be his partner in a shop and a restaurant. Ben then enters Binnie's office. Binnie tells Ray that he ruined his family and he should get off his lot. Ray says he is staying on with the company as his chaser in his own truck. Outside Ray is roughing up Sean. Ray picks up the bike Zach wants and brings it to Zach's birthday party. Ben sits down by Avery and tells her he paid for the bike. When she asks how, another accident call echoes on the tow trucks scanner.
