What is ‘The Last of Us’ about?
The Last of Us is based on a hugely popular video game of the same name. It follows Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, and Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, as they navigate a world that has been ravaged by a viral fungal infection.

Discovery Inc. CEO David Zaslav knows there’s a lot of industry consolidation going on, with Disney and Comcast fighting over Fox, and At&T buying Time Warner. And he’s just as curious as we are to see where it all ends up.
“I wish I knew how all the chips are going to fall,” Zaslav told TV critics gathered at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. “We’ve placed a lot of chips as bets in areas in the field that most of our competitors haven’t.”
Zaslav would know a lot about consolidation too. His company just closed its nearly $15 billion acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, which added networks like Hgtv, Food Network and Cooking Channel to Discovery’s own hefty portfolio. Between the two companies, that’s a total of 19 different networks.

The newly expanded Discovery, which recently acquired the Scripps Networks stable of lifestyle outlets like Hgtv and Food Network, is ready to take on the streamers by being the factual/unscripted alternative. Speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour, CEO David Zaslav hinted that an eventual direct-to-consumer Discovery streaming service would cost between $6 and $8 a month, and be promoted as an offering that would be an alternative, or additive, to the scripted-heavy offerings of other services.
“We see the media business as two sides — one side is scripted series and movies, and we’ve moved away from that,” Zaslav noted. Those scripted services already charge, or eventually will charge, between $10 and $15 for their platforms. “We see what we have as everything else,” he said. “We have great content. We own it all globally… We have a lot of scale. We have a lot of strength.

The new comedy “Mary + Jane,” debuting tonight on MTV, has been compared quite a bit to Comedy Central’s “Broad City.” But the real comparison point, if you’re familiar with the previous work of its creators, is “Josie and the Pussycats.”
The 2001 cult film, written and directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, was a surprisingly tough yet hilarious teardown of superficial teen culture – one that still has a rabid fanbase.
That following even includes Jessica Rothe, who (along with Scout Durwood) plays one of the “ganjapreneurs” on “Mary + Jane,” delivering weed to an eclectic range of Angelenos. “It was not until halfway through shooting that she admitted how much a ‘Josie and the Pussycats’ fan she was,” Elfont said.
“Mary + Jane” is Kaplan and Elfont’s first TV series. Like many filmmakers (this is “the answer that everyone gives,” Elfont admits), the duo eventually realized that TV is...

It’s no accident that Discovery Channel premieres its original “Harley and the Davidsons” miniseries on Labor Day.
The three-part series turns back the clock to reveal how the creation of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was a true labor of love by three men from blue-collar immigrant families, who championed labor rights. They were even inducted posthumously in 2004 into the Labor Hall of Fame for their company’s accomplishments and ongoing contributions to the workforce. Despite being one of the most iconic American brands, however, the Harley-Davidson story is not widely known.

After all, the channel has developed a strong following due to its focus on documentary and reality television series that aim to inform and entertain in equal measure (e.g., shows like Mythbusters and its annual Shark Week event). Yet, Discovery has recently announced a new commitment to scripted content for the 2016-2017 season, one that largely begins with Harley and the Davidsons.
The three-part miniseries tracks the origin of Harley-Davidson Inc. from an upstart motorcycle manufacturer in the early 1900s through to the development of the company’s signature “Knucklehead” engine in the 1930s, a design that is still integral to today’s models.
