Has a budget of Rs.543 crore ($76 million) making it the second biggest budget movie from Asia (highest from India). The first being the Chinese film Asura (2018) with a budget of $100 million dollars set to release in 2018.
Amitabh Bachchan was also considered for the negative part in the film but Rajnikanth himself refuses it as he believed that people won't accept him in negative character.
Akshay Kumar will make his Tamil debut with this film.
This film is a standalone sequel, meaning that while it does take characters from the previous film, it does not completely serve as a continuation of its plot, sometimes to the point that it completely establishes a new plot line for these characters. This is different from the term it has been designated by others, a "spiritual successor", where the themes and plot structure are the only things retained, while everything else including the characters are completely changed. In this film, Rajinikanth does continue with playing Dr. Vaseegaran and Chitti, and there is the son of Dr. Bohra (the antagonist from the previous film, 'Enthiran'), who serves as one of the main antagonists here. However, many other elements seemed to have changed, including the designs and to some extent, the tone of the film.
Various Hollywood stalwarts including Sean Foot (Avatar), Kenny Bates (Transformers), Aaron Crippen (Batman v Superman) and Steve Griffin worked in the film.
