Shot in Torrelaguna, a small town north of Madrid.
Only the second Spanish-language film to open the Cannes Film Festival, following Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education (2004). It is also one of the few openers in Cannes history which is not in either English or French.
The film was never released in the theaters in Farhadi's home country, Iran.
Farhadi delayed the production of "Everybody knows" to return to Iran and shoot "The Salesman".
Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have been married since 2010.
