Sony Pictures Television is widening the creative circle — by a lot — in its comedy division.
The studio has signed first-look deals with nine writers and comics — Scott Aukerman, Karen Chee, Shaun Diston, Chris Garcia, Chris Gethard, Lisa Gilroy, Lacey Jeka, Julie Klausner and Alok Vaid-Menon. They’ll all work on developing new comedy series projects and potentially collaborate with other writers and producers who have deals at Sony.
Lauren Stein, head of creative at Sony Pictures TV, and Colin Davis, executive vp comedy development, said the deals are part of an effort at the studio to bring in what Davis calls a “spectrum of sensibilities” to comedy development.
“The list is a collective of a different creators and multihyphenates that we believe each have unique voices and a hit show in them,” Davis said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They really represent the comedy community at large, and...

John Mulaney’s limited-run Netflix talk show has been generating a lot of buzz this week, but for some fans of the show it’s been bittersweet, reminding them of another show—one that got away.
“We are only doing six episodes, so this show will never hit its groove,” Mulaney joked in the first episode of Everybody’s in L.A. last Friday. Groove or not, what Mulaney’s show has in spades is a vibe—one that reviewers, as cited by the host himself on the second episode, have called “loose,” “clunky,” and “impulsive” (in a good way).
It’s that vibe that’s reminded some viewers of The Chris Gethard Show, which began as a live show at NYC’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre before moving to public access TV in Manhattan. It then got a 20-episode run on Fusion, followed by a switch to truTV, where...

Showtime’s late-night series Desus & Mero is taking the week off after Desus Nice, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, was hit by Covid-19. The series, which moved from twice a week to weekly with the return of its fourth season earlier this month, will be postponed due to the positive test.
Desus said that he’s been isolating, is vaxxed and boosted and “right now my only symptom is boredom.”
It comes a year after The Kid Mero, otherwise known as Joel Martinez, also contracted Covid. In that case, the show carried on but was tweaked to include some pre-taped segments.
The duo have been back in the studio since June 2021.
The launch of the fourth season March 10 saw them bring in their first official showrunner in J.D. Amato, the executive producer of The Chris Gethard Show and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart.

Political monologues, celebrity interviews, and engineered viral bits may be the preferred late night currency these days. But every few months, something so delightfully weird happens in the wee hours of the broadcast schedule that it feels worthy of celebrating.
The latest in a distinct “Late Night with Seth Meyers” tradition of all-encompassing, chaos-embracing segments is “Late Night Casserole,” a collection of jokes and premises that might not necessarily work if presented on their own. But when smushed together over the span of a dozen minutes of insanity, it’s one of the best examples of what can happen when a late night show removes all its restraints.
“Late Night Casserole” is a spiritual sibling of “Joke Bucket,” whose praises we’ve sung in the past. One thing that connects the two is Meyers’ demeanor, the preemptory, apologetic nature of the way he introduces each successive part of the whole thing.

After a month and a half, Viceland is pulling the plug on “Vice Live,” its weeknight live show, due to low ratings.
“Vice Live” aired Monday through Thursday from Vice’s Brooklyn headquarters, originally launching as a two-hour nightly showcase of all things Vice. Viceland later cut the show to one hour a night, but “Vice Live” never managed to catch on in pop culture. The final episode of “Vice Live” aired last Thursday. Viceland president Guy Slattery announced the cancellation to staffers on Monday. A spokesperson referred Variety to an internal memo sent by Slattery.

Paul Giamatti watching porn is one of the most wrenchingly human things you’ll see on screen this year. This heart-rending spectacle happens just a few minutes into Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life,” as Giamatti — playing 47-year-old theater director Richard Grimes — sits alone in a small white room in the Manhattan fertility clinic where he and his wife (Kathryn Hahn) have come in a desperate bid to conceive. His job is to produce a sperm sample. On the TV screen mounted against the far wall, an adult actor can be seen pile-driving his co-star, causing her to moan loud enough for everyone in the crowded waiting area outside to know what Richard is supposed to be doing in there. Jenkins holds on a close-up; exasperation, futility, and shame are written across Giamatti’s face like subtitles. Has it really come to this?
As the scene continues, it’s like a vintage Charlie Chaplin bit in slow-motion.

“The Chris Gethard Show” has been canceled after 26 episodes on truTV, the comedian said in a Facebook post on Monday.
“It’s official! The Chris Gethard Show is canceled. Kaput. No more!” he wrote. “I write this with a strange mix of emotions: sadness, worry, uncertainty, but also pride, excitement, and relief.”
Originally an Upright Citizens Brigade live show that eventually made its way to public access television, “The Chris Gethard Show” has had a troubled life on commercial TV. In 2013, Gethard shot a pilot episode of the show for Comedy Central, which opted not to give it a series order. It then ran for two seasons on Fusion before finally making its way to truTV.
The final episode of the show aired in May.

Last Year’s Winner: “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: Though the category has only been in existence for three years, only “The Daily Show” or “Daily Show” alumni have won: “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”
Fun Fact: To that end, only men named Jon/John have won.
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” has won two years running, and the hit HBO late night series isn’t slowing down in 2018; it’s a major threat to take home the trophy again. But before we get to Phase Two, there are only a few slots up for grabs and quite a few shows looking to fill them.
Of last year’s nominees, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” have only strengthened their cases. “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has a bit of a controversy to contend with,...

With more news to cover than ever, TV’s late-night talk and variety shows have had their work cut out for them. Luckily — if a bit overwhelming — for us, there are also more talk and variety shows on the air than ever to help us parse through it all. In fact, some of the year’s most poignant news coverage came from usually comedic shows, from Jimmy Kimmel’s earnest Obamacare monologues to John Oliver’s deep dives into decidedly unsexy topics including crisis pregnancy centers and Joe Arpaio’s horrific human-rights record.
Even when not making direct eye contact with the camera to plead some joke-free case, however, late-night hosts have found their own way of dealing with the onslaught of news. On CBS, “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” runs on a steady diet of fuming incredulity, while “The Late Late Show With James Corden” opts for explosions of giddy pageantry.

With the proliferation of both talk shows and sketch programs, the TV academy decided to split the variety series category into two separate categories in 2015 to better recognize achievements in both these genres. While there were 28 entries for Best Variety Talk Series in 2015 that dipped down to 17 in 2016 and 20 in 2017. However, it is on the rise this year with 21 shows on the Emmy Awards nominations ballot. With six series reaping bids, the odds for each entry are pretty good.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for their favorite variety talk shows. In the past, voters were limited in the number of such shows that they could put forth; last year that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. Unlike the Oscars voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

If Tuesday night was your first episode of “The Chris Gethard Show,” it was probably around the point where a 12-foot-tall stack of cardboard boxes wobbled onto set that you realized it’s unlike anything else on TV. Sadly, if that was your first episode of “The Chris Gethard Show,” you also may have arrived at the station just as the last train left.
Since making its transition from public access to basic cable in May 2015, “The Chris Gethard Show” has staked its reputation to a very specific, unmistakable brand of anything-goes variety show unpredictability. Even with a talented staff of writers, some of whom have gone on to find work on network talk shows and “Saturday Night Live,” there has always been a certain amount of controlled chaos baked into the DNA of the series. Entire episodes have been built around the concept of putting host Chris Gethard, sidekick Shannon O’Neill,...

“The Chris Gethard Show” is back again, and the first thing it’s going to do is teach you how to say “I Don’t Give a Butt.” truTV is bringing the show back for 10 new episodes of improv and fun guests beginning in March, and the cast and crew are getting us excited with some music. The show’s house band, The LLC, has released a new music video called “I Don’t Give a Butt,” and it’s just as enjoyable and weird as the actual show.

Even as most shows have begun to coalesce around the same headline-response efforts on a daily and weekly basis, there’s still enough variety in late night TV to avoid painting it with the same broad brush. Sure, some days make it hard for approaches to the day’s biggest news stories not to have a little overlap.
But, for the most part, the stand-out moments from late night TV in 2017 come from the singular ways that these shows confronted a wide range of issues and curiosities outside DC confines. Some of them were political, others were defiant, and more still added some much-needed silliness amidst a yearlong wave of anxiety.
With the sheer volume of late-night-structured shows on TV, we were able to pick out a memorable moment for each of them, across network, broadcast, and premium cable here in the States. (If you’re looking for the year’s best Graham Norton clips,...

On Thursday night, Chris Gethard is going back home.
Sure, home is a set at a Midtown Manhattan studio, made of leftover material from the set of David Letterman’s old show. Some of it’s been repurposed into The Diddy Door, a walkway reserved for Sean Combs.
“It’s oddly emotional for me to walk in and take a deep breath, because I always think about how for four years on public access, I did not have access to the trunk of my own car because it was full of our set,” Gethard said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “We’d have to show up, set it up, every week, knock it down every week, put it back in the trunk. The idea that we have a set now that’s a semi-permanent thing is just so mind blowing. It feels like an odd little victory.”

If you ever thought that daytime lifestyle shows needed more of Jane Krakowski belting, then Amy Sedaris has some wonderful news for you.
truTV released the first look at Sedaris’ upcoming domestic design show satire “At Home with Amy Sedaris” on Thursday, and it’s the kind of surreal you’d expect from a show with her name on it.

Chris Gethard doesn’t want you to worry about him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t nervous.
“Permanence is not my usual M.O. and it’s pretty terrifying,” Gethard said, sitting in the Hollywood offices of Funny or Die last month. He smiled, but even he’ll admit that behind that grin, there’s the reserved bit of trepidation that comes before releasing a bit of yourself out into the world.
On Saturday, his comedy special “Chris Gethard: Career Suicide” will debut on HBO. In it, over the course of an hour and a half, Gethard details his decades-long relationship with depression, recounting his first experiences with a sinking sensation he couldn’t quite identify, all the way through impulsive suicide attempts, pieced-together blackout spells and the process of finding healthier, constructive ways to deal with all of those conflicting feelings and ideas.

Chris Gethard has achieved the kind of ubiquity that’s rare in the American comedy landscape. For years, he’s mined the humor in supporting roles in everything from Parks And Recreation to Broad City, as well as turning in affecting performances in films like Don’t Think Twice. And it’s all delivered with the offbeat appeal of a guy who’s been quietly building a loyal and devoted fan base of fellow outsiders, in large part through his cult series The Chris Gethard Show. And now, in honor of his new HBO comedy special Career Suicide, The A.V. Club is giving those same fans a chance to hit up the awkwardly endearing comedian with whatever question they’d like.

Political dynasties may find no love from Americans these days, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love our comedy dynasties. Fans of David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris will agree a little nepotism isn’t always a bad thing, as well as those who ate crow when Abby Elliott proved herself worthy of the strings (real or rumored) pulled by her father, “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Elliott, to get her an audition for the show that started his career. Now, two great comedic families finally join forces as Amy Sedaris and Chris Elliott play the world’s worst parents in “Thanksgiving,” a loopy family comedy that — like its target audience — could use an Adderall.

At the time of this post, Thanksgiving is just eight days away, and Verizon and Hearst’s Seriously.TV venture is getting into the holiday spirit with a new web series. It’s called Thanksgiving, it follows the members of a dysfunctional family across a single Turkey Day, and it’s now available through Verizon’s Go90 platform.
Thanksgiving is the creation of Bethany Hall (who was a regular on the cult-favorite public-access TV series The Chris Gethard Show) and Daniel Powell (the co-creator of Inside Amy Schumer). To inject some star power into their show, Hall and Powell assembled a top-notch cast. The members of the Morgan and Tuniclif families include Bridey Elliott (who we’ve seen in several web series over the past few years), her real-life father Chris (who is an actor in his own right), and the always-exciting Amy Sedaris.
As with the other comedy shows produced under the Seriously.

For years, an improve group called The Commune have been the stars of their small New York improv theater. Funny or Die has some new executives around the office. The digital media company has hired Owen Burke for the newly-created position of editor-in-chief, and has promoted Chris Bruss to the role of President of Digital Content.
Burke comes to Funny or Die already highly familiar with the digital media company. The executive has consulted for Funny or Die since 2007. Burke also executive produced the company’s The Chris Gethard Show for linear airing on Fusion. The new Funny or Die executive also brings plenty of comedy experience to the table, having held the artistic director position at Upright Citizen’s Brigade New York theater and performing at the group’s Los Angeles-based location.
“Owen was born to be the day-to-day creative head of Fod,” Funny or Die co-founder Adam McKay said in a statement as reported by Variety. “He’s collaborative, smart and most of all very, very funny.
