The Star Value of Dhanush is significantly raised since the movies Raanjhana,VIP,Shamitabh etc and hence the director has tried to use his presence for this commercial plot. Maari(Dhanush) is a local goon and he is not a regular Don who supports or protects people in his area, this don is the one hated by everybody. There is a very simple plot and not any big story to follow in the script, the screenplay is comical, not boring and Robo Shankar with his wits shines well and comes almost throughout the movie.
The Whole film revolves around Dhanush and he carries it well with his looks, acting, style and Body language, most of the scenes he speaks punch dialogs lights a cigarette(Most of the Scenes he is seen smoking or drinking) and walks with the ear drum banging background music(Courtesy:Anirudh) Songs are very good,Since Dhanush is a very good dancer this movie is no exception, the villain role is played by Vijay Yesudas(debut) he did good, but maybe they should have considered some other person who looks more serious in order to match Dhanush's Mass Aura in the movie.
Maari is an entertainer with a weak story line and if you love Dhanush you will love it.For other this will be a not so boring time-pass.

There are some gangsta movies which tries to be better but end up being being bad, Maari is not one of them. It starts off being bad and ends up being awfully painful. But this movie served one purpose, this is the movie which can be showcased for all aspiring actors, directors, screenwriters and pointed out how not to take a movie
I don't even know where do i begin with this atrocity. Everything was horrible, from the premise, the actors, the comedy relief, the stunts, heroine, Story (there was none). It is like a wasted potluck, anything you pick from this movie can taste literally horrible and you would wonder why do you need it at all I like masala movies, not a huge fan but still, as i saw the trailer i knew what was i into. All i was expecting from this movie was some really fantastic dialogues which will become the cuss of all Chennaiates in future and a equally good acting by Dhanush and some mindless action. Please anyone tell me if this is too much of an expectation. And the movie did not miss this by a pinch, it missed it by a huge mile.
Calling premise stupid would be a understatement, it was one of the most fun-intended-action-aspired bullshit. From there the movie lost me, but the comedy relief made me chuckle in the beginning and i expected them to carry the movie at least half-way, NO, not to be. Then came a face-off between the good cop and the rouge hero, i was expecting some action, NO the movie stops the scene and moves to elsewhere.
Nothing in this movie is continuous, the editing is so awful. It just looks like every scene was shot in intervals of years and patched together to give a grotesque screenplay. I am not kidding, many times i felt why was that scene there? Was it just for the next scene to happen? No other purpose, seriously?? OK i will not even comment on anything else, the least i should expect was some mindless action which will make me remember the movie for at least a week, again plot twist, the Director says NO. There was just 2 fights in the entire movie and both of them was so badly Stunt Choreographed it just felt like Dhanush was smashing Styrofoam shaped mannequin and not real people. What a waste, a DON movie where fight is awful, what more could go wrong? Acting was predictable and shitty. You have one of the best actors, Dhanush and this was what you can come up with? That guy can do anything, why make a mockery out of him.
Characters was worthless, none of them gave you that involvement that you want to root for them. I did not care if Dhanush dies, Vijay Yesudas dies or even the entire cast commit suicide and end the movie. Not a remorse for anyone, there at least could have been a strong back story justifying why the hero is the way he is.
No story, awful characterisation, dismal stunts, sub-standard dialogues and all so not all important comedy relief. If the entire world was coming to an end and this was the last movie that i could watch before the apocalypse, i would still gladly pass

I loved it. Dhanush looked amazing. The story was simple to follow. Kajal was beautiful. The costume designer did a great job on both Dhanus and Kajal.
There were few good songs. The Don'u Don'u Don'u song is super, can't get enough of it.
Some shots were really beautiful. Action scenes were nice, I can remember few action scenes that were well thought out and looked amazing.
A mass action comedy with heart. Had a good time watching it.

Total rubbish of a movie. A supposedly Gangster flick with comic elements, the film falls flat. Dhanush tries to gamely carry this so- called movie on his own, but despite his decent acting and timing, it really doesn't redeem it.
The story is the same masala related to a Don of a area. In Tamil, this guy will be a hero, a Porikki (tapori) type and a well heeled fair girl would turn up to spice the romantic angle. The bad cop item is also there. It was boring. Of course, these movies have audience and make some money. So, if you like Porriki type of tamil movie, this may be your timepass to watch. Otherwise, stay out.

This is the most unique rowdy movie u would ever see!! Loads of love for heart-throbbing Dhanush. Even in Nayagan movie, u guys rated 8.8/10, when in that film, Kamal Hassan faces lots of problems due to family life, which has been rightfully said as "WASTE" by our Dhanush. A must watch comedy movie. If real men don't like this movie, which explains real masculinity, u guys are not at all men.

Just awful! Just watched the first season of Peaky blinders and realized how a masterpiece was obliterated by this mindless stolen copy.
The film is not so good. Music and BGM in the film are awesome. But there is no story line in the film. The comedy was good in the film. Action scenes were good in the film.

Since the Baashha days, leading stars donning don roles has become a big trend. We have seen a Godfather-style Velu Naicker, a larger-than-life Manik Baasha, and a stylish David Billa but Balaji Mohan's Maari is different. Maari portrayed by Dhanush is a naughty and comic don who doesn't care about anything nor anyone. Dhanush's characterization is interesting in Maari and it's a delight to watch his performance. He is the complete entertainment in Maari with his ravishing swag look and his screen presence. Anirudh's background score adds the massy feel needed and it's a fire-cracking moment whenever we hear it in the film. Balaji Mohan has packaged Maari as a mass commercial entertainer but unfortunately, it does only shine for Dhanush's performance. Except for him, we haven't a strong antagonist nor strong supporting characters. Maari feels at some point really flat without any proper excitement. The film is slow and doesn't have any kind of plot twist. Except for the climax, the film isn't interesting because there are no memorable moments in it. Dhanush is the only savior of the film and he does lift the film on his own shoulders. Anirudh's album plays a big time in making the film much more colorful and gives it a festival feel. Balaji as a filmmaker did create a memorable role for Dhanush but apart from that, there's nothing to retain from the film. Overall, Maari is only watchable for Dhanush's performance and Anirudh's enjoyable album.
