Horror Feature “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded” to Premiere in June: "Writer/Director Scott Bryan’s puppet-filled existential horror feature, “My (Best Friend’S) Head Exploded,” will have its two-weekend world premiere this June.
“My (Best Friend’s) Head Exploded” is a rebellious, existential, terrifyingly messy puppet feature made out of material things by actual people. It tells the story of Lydia, a coming-of-ageless vampire forced to deal with the loss of her best friend, Sam, after the pair conjures a moment of complete clarity which causes Sam’s head to explode.
In the aftermath, Lydia must contend with old ghosts, generational trauma, oppressive authority figures, and the confusing fear of infinity to set reality right and save her own sanity.
“I love making weird stuff that a studio would be afraid of and a computer couldn’t replicate,” Bryan said.
The film will show at the Salem Witch Board Museum in Salem,...

Yellow Veil Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to “The Becomers,” a genre-bending comedy written and directed by Zach Clark. The company will launch the film at the Marche Du Film in Cannes this week. “The Becomer” tells the story of a body-snatching alien who comes to Earth, reconnects with their partner, and tries to find their way in modern America.
“During the pandemic, I binged the original ‘Star Trek’ series for the first time and then I made this movie” Clark said about his latest film. “It felt like life as we knew it was ending, but then again, it also felt like that might not be the worst thing either. ‘The Becomers’ is a story of love, longing, and alienation. A kitsch-soaked, pathos-laden melodrama about our sad, sad planet. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever made and I can’t think of anyone better than Yellow Veil...

The Sopranos creator David Chase is getting into business with FX.
Chase and A Teacher creator Hannah Fidell are co-writing and co-creating a drama for the Disney-owned outlet. Details are being kept quiet, but it’s based on a previously unproduced script of Chase’s, with a contemporary take by Fidell.
FX Productions is behind the project, which has a pilot commitment. Fidell will also direct; Chase, Fidell and Chase Films’ Nicole Lambert are executive producing.
The project landing at FX is something of a surprise considering Chase signed a five-year, first-look TV and film deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in October 2021, as his Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark was being released.
The Sopranos, of course, is considered among the greatest TV dramas of all time and won 21 Emmys during its 1999-2007 run on HBO, including two best drama honors and three writing awards for Chase. Since the show’s end,...

Indie filmmaker Hannah Fidell is circling back to her roots. While she has made relationship dramas like “6 Years,” the Netflix comedy, “The Long Dumb Road,” and directed plenty of TV, her latest project is the most ambitious of her career. It’s a remake and reimagining of her own work, her 2013 directorial debut “A Teacher,” about a female teacher who has an affair with one of her students and the implosion of those events.

After writing for Silicon Valley and Eastbound and Down, as well as scripting The Long Dumb Road, Carson Mell has written, directed, and starred in a new feature titled Some of Our Stallions. Also led by Al Di and Olivia Taylor Dudley, with appearances by Tim Heidecker, David Zellner, and Mike Judge, the first trailer has arrived ahead of a July 2 release.
The oddball buddy comedy follows Beautiful Bill & Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, who are best friends. With their sanity still slipping, they attempt to reintegrate back into society by meeting like-minded women at a nearby mental health facility. With his writing experience, Mell currently has a strong grasp at dark comedy, so hopefully he succeeds in what looks like a tricky tonal balance.
See the trailer and poster below.

Carson Mell was a legit Sundance discovery and perhaps we can call him an actual triple threat as he premiered his first three shorts in three consecutive editions – an impressive and rare feat that we believe only Robert Machoian might have recently accomplished. After 2007’s Bobby Bird: The Devil in Denim, 2008’s Chonto and 2009’s Field Notes from Dimension X: Oasis, Mell’s directorial debut Another Evil landed at SXSW while The Long Dumb Road, a project he co-wrote with Hannah Fidell was a Sundance entry in 2018. If selected for Sundance, his second feature film titled Some of Our Stallions would be among the most prepped in post production items as filming took place way back in February of 2019 in Vancouver.…...

July has been a nice experience so far for anyone with a streaming service subscription. Nearly every platform has offered exceptional new content to watch, and as usual, Netflix leads the pack with some of the best new movies and shows available.
Subscribers have already been treated to the underrated epic Cloud Atlas, Adam Sandler’s often forgotten I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and emotional boxing tale Million Dollar Baby, among many, many others. And now, today brings even more new stuff to add to your binge list.
First up, Jason Mantzoukas and Tony Revolori star in the 2018 comedy The Long Dumb Road, and the title alone pretty much covers what this road trip flick is about. Critics praised the duo’s chemistry when the film released, and it currently sits at a fairly decent 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, if you’re in the mood for a humorous...

Every year, movies are being produced at faster rates and in greater quantity, and that’s thanks – in part – to streamers like Netflix. Because of their business strategy, customers can now watch thousands of films for the same price as a single cinema ticket. As such, the entertainment appetite of the American public has been growing stronger with each passing season. To that end, here’s an overview of the best new movies coming to Netflix next month.
First off, we got science fiction and fantasy. Fans of visiting other worlds will be in for a treat in July, as Netflix will be adding Cloud Atlas to its library. Directed by the Wachowski siblings – the same ones who created the now-infamous Matrix franchise – this time-traveling epic follows the stories of a handful of reincarnating souls who live their different yet similar lives across several centuries.

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

As if to apologetically clear the cinematic air for Miami, “cigarette” power boats, and art in general after the atrocity of 2018’s John Travolta vehicle “Speed Kills,” “Omniboat” applies a brisk scrub of cleansing absurdism to the same locational and vehicular themes. This de facto compilation feature by a dozen-plus writer-directors, commissioned by that city’s indie filmmaking collective the Borscht Corporation, is an exquisite-corpse narrative depicting the rocky times of one 47-foot Top Gun speedboat. It’s an inspired goof — for a while, before it turns into waaaaaay too much of a good thing.

The cast of The Long Dumb Road discussed the challenges of revitalizing a well known genre and retelling the classic American road trip narrative.
Director Hannah Fidell specifically pointed out her desire to film the American landscape, coast to coast, and highlight the Southwest — providing a picturesque backdrop to a nightmare trip.

Star-driven specialties mostly took a pause this weekend, though the big ticket awards-release Friday, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs from Netflix, had a courtesy theatrical release in a few Landmark theater locations, giving the Coen brothers release the watermarks of an awards release.
The focus is still on its core streaming service, so box office numbers are not released by Netflix. But a quick check at the theater website shows the musical-Western, starring Liam Neeson, James Franco, and Zoe Kazan, played in smaller houses. So the theatrical experience for this title will be for a very select NY and L.A. coastal crowd, and likely not a big box office number. But that’s how it was designed. Some of the other big fall releases will follow suit, with symbolic theatricals via Netflix, including Alfonso Cuarón’s amazing Roma and Susanne Bier’s anticipated Bird Box.

The stream of fall rollouts continues, although at a bit slower pace on the specialty box office front compared with recent weekends. Among them however is the Coen brothers’ anticipated The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, with Netflix beginning a very limited theatrical run today in New York at The Landmark 57 West, at The Landmark Los Angeles and the Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco.
Buster Scruggs is one of three Netflix films — along with Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and Susanne Bier’s Bird Box — to get a rare pre-streaming theatrical release as the company looks to to boost awareness for its awards-season fare. This film is also screening this weekend at AFI Fest and will be available via the service next week.
As per Netflix, the company doesn’t plan to release box office figures for its films.

The manic, anarchic charm of Jason Mantzoukas is on full display in The Long Dumb Road, Hannah Fidell’s latest feature, which follows his character alongside Tony Revolori’s Nat on a road trip to Los Angeles. While the comedian is usually utilized for quick bursts of energy in various comedies, Fidell gives him a genuine arc and proves his leading man potential.
After premiering at Sundance, the comedy will arrive in theaters this week and we’re pleased to present an exclusive clip in which Mantzoukas’ drifter character Richard has many thoughts on The Rolling Stones. In Dan Mecca’s review, he said Mantzoukas steals the show and “his ability to find the humor in almost every moment is a true gift,” as displayed in this clip.
Also starring Taissa Farmiga, Grace Gummer, Casey Wilson, and Ron Livingston, check out our exclusive clip and the trailer below.

It’s not always a compliment to note that a movie feels like the right fit for Sundance. Festival faves often deflate when they reach the real world, unable to survive without the eager enthusiasm of film fans. The Sundance premiere “The Long Dumb Road” is undeniably cut from familiar cloth. But it’s got enough charm to keep it buoyant long after Robert Redford waves the last blogger goodbye.
As with all road movies, its success rides on the company we’re required to keep. Happily, our two leads are unflaggingly delightful companions.

In exclusive comedy clip, watch Tony Revolori and Jason Mntzoukas discuss the finer things in life on The Long Dumb Road.
Life can be hard, but a road trip with funnymen can often do the trick of lightening the load—for audiences and characters alike. So it goes with The Long Dumb Road, a comedy on the road of the American Southwest that looks at the small but still stark generational divide between its two central characters: Nat (played by Tony Revolori) and Richard (Jason Mantzoukas). In the film, Nat is an aspiring photographer who is bound for college and a shiny new future; Richard is a 30-something millennial who just wants a buddy for the drive, and maybe the chance to get drunk all across the open road of Americana that lies between blue dot Austin, Texas and the dream factory that is Los Angeles.

We’ve all had that moment when the stranger you agreed to share your car ride with offers you a “road brew.” Ok, likely none of us has, but it happens in The Long Dumb Road, and it’s followed by said passenger cracking the bottle open and saying, “Don’t worry about it, dude. I’m pretty much a professinaol level in drinking and driving.” Watch the new trailer above.
Tony Revolori plays Nat, a college-bound teenager who admitted has led “like a pretty sheltered life.” But during a stop-over in small-town Texas, he gives a lift to Richard (Jason Mantzoukas), an itinerant thirtysomething mechanic — or ex-mechanic, as we see him quitting right after he’s fired. As they travel through the Southwest, the pair crosses paths with an assortment of old flames, fellow travelers, kooky cons and Good Samaritans, and both of them come alive.

If a road trip with Jason Mantzoukas and Tony Revolori sounds like your idea of a good time, then you’re going to love “The Long Dumb Road.” The new comedy from “A Teacher” filmmaker Hannah Fidell stars these two charmers as an odd couple thrust together by a little bit of chance, a whole lot of chutzpah, and one very questionable decision. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released the first official trailer for “The Long Dumb Road” Thursday, and Mantzoukas stands out as the wacky star of this buddy comedy.
The synopsis reads: “Nat (Revolori), an aspiring photographer, is heading towards a bright future in art school in Los Angeles and wants to find the real America en route to new beginnings out West; Richard (Mantzoukas), a lovably unkempt motormouth, is simply looking for connection in the moment — and maybe a beer or ten — while he grapples with indecision, past mistakes and dead-ends.

"You're one of the realest people I think I've ever met." The Film Arcade has revealed the first official trailer for indie comedy The Long Dumb Road, which premiered as the Closing Night film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film stars Tony Revolori (from The Grand Budapest Hotel) as a boy leaving home to drive cross country towards college. He decides to give a ride to a stranger he randomly meets along the way. The two both find themselves at personal crossroads and decide to embark on an unplanned road trip across the American Southwest, ending up in all kinds of trouble. Comedian Jason Mantzoukas co-stars as Richard in this, along with Taissa Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Grace Gummer, Casey Wilson, Pamela Reed, Ciara Bravo, and Cynthy Wu. It's a fun road trip film, as mildly amusing as it looks here. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

Filmmakers often draw their inspiration and ideas from where their movies are set. For Hannah Fidell, it’s the American Southwest. Her previous films have been more serious in tone but in her latest, “The Long Dumb Road,” Fidell chose to focus on the fun and lightness of the setting. “I’ve shot all of the movies I’ve made in the southwest. There’s just something really iconic about it. That’s what we think about when we think about the ‘great American road trip.’” Check out the official synopsis below:

ReFrame — a coalition of industry leaders founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute — and IMDbPro announced on Tuesday nearly two dozen films to be certified for their gender-balanced productions.
Reframe launched the data initiative in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. The collaboration relies on data from IMDbPro to analyze films and television series to see how many women were involved in the production, and how much screen time female characters had. To earn the ReFrame Stamp, a film or TV show must meet a handful of requirements that call for women in key roles like starring, directing, producing, and writing. Additional points are awarded for having racial diversity. (The full criteria can be found here.)
The ReFrame Stamp program launched on June 8 with the announcement of 12 films that earned the stamp out of 100 films surveyed. The group then expanded the program by...

Exclusive: FX is developing A Teacher, a limited series based on Hannah Fidell’s buzzy Sundance feature, with Kate Mara (House of Cards) attached to star and executive produce.
Fidell, who wrote, directed and produced the 2013 film, will pen the adaptation, direct and executive produce the potential series.
Timelier than ever in the #MeToo era, A Teacher is an exploration of consent, abuse of power, victimhood and the inevitable consequences that occur throughout a community after a female high school teacher (Mara) and her student are caught having an affair. FX Productions is the studio.
Mara will play the role played in the film by Lindsay Burdge. You can watch a trailer for the film, which co-starred Will Brittain, below.
A TV series adaptation of A Teacher was originally set up at HBO in 2014 with no acting talent attached. With the project’s option coming up, I hear Fidell opted to take a different route.
