On the road to the old manor of grandmother Mimi, where his family always gathers at the end of the year, Max Plume discovers a strange footprint in the snow. It can't possibly be of a human, but also not of an animal. According to his grandmother it must be the footprint of a mountain troll, but Mimi often says strange things like that. Max starts his own investigation and dares to, despite the warnings of his parents, venture onto the frozen lake.

Max has recovered from his dive into the icy lake and starts looking for the troll that saved him from the hole in the ice. A trail leads him to the nearby posh hotel Portly Hill, which is being plagued by a cake thief. When the surly guard, Pus, catches Max, he is accused of being the thief. Sally, the headstrong little daughter of the hotel owner Ostering, sticks up for Max. She also found strange footprints in the snow, that could lead to the real cake thief: a hungry troll.

Max must keep Trollie hidden from his family. It's not that easy, since the unmannered troll likes to explore and is always hungry. Max has to continuously take the blame for the troubles that his friend causes his uncles and aunts. When hotel owner Jesse Ostering visits with his little daughter Sally, it doesn't become any easier to keep Trollie hidden from his family.

Berber can no longer bear to watch Max seemingly spending all his time alone in his small room in the attic. When he has to go with her to visit her old childhood friend Jesse Ostering, he locks Trollie - who is homesick - in his room. For a while now, Ming and Ling suspect that Max is hiding something in the attic and they are going to investigate it.

Now that Max knows that Trollie lives on Rabbit Mountain, he has to find a way to bring him back to his family. Disguised in a ski outfit he smuggles the troll up the mountain in the ski lift. Sally has followed them though and has a suspicion that she knows who that mysterious friend who Max hangs out with might be. In the meantime dark clouds are gathering over Rabbit Mountain. A snowstorm threatens their expedition. At Bernstein, Ostering makes a surprising offer to buy the country estate from Mimi, but the question is whether she can make that decision herself. Everyone in the family is starting to have doubts about grandmother Mimi's mental capacities.
