"Vecchi pazzi" was originally produced as a TV-movie and still announced as such for its premiere at Solothurn Film Festival (the big national event for Swiss movies). It was later deemed good enough for a theatrical release by its producer-distributor Vega Film, albeit officially only in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. Foreign distribution failed to materialize, even after a few festival showings.
