Before watching Fury Road on the big screen Tom Hardy didn't want to reprise his role of Max because of the difficulties he had on set. Once he saw the film he said he couldn't wait to get back into his leathers but he had to have a dog companion next time.
A month before Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) was released, Tom Hardy signed up for a new Mad Max trilogy.
Tom Hardy has reportedly been signed on for a 3 movie deal where he will reprise his role as Max Rockatansky in a prequel about Max and a prequel/sequel about Furiosa. There are no plans for a Fury Road sequel centred around Max at this time.
Overwhelmingly positive internet buzz after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) led to a fan's creation of a fake Twitter account for director George Miller. A tweet from that account was one of the first "formal" announcements of this sequel/follow up film. The account received thousands of followers overnight, and was even incorrectly "verified" by the social network as a legitimate account, as well as referenced in blog posts by major news sources as the voice of Miller himself. The truth eventually surfaced and the account was suspended, while news of the sequel plans was confirmed by the proper sources.
After all that blood, sweat and Tom-Hardy-feuding, Charlize Theron won't be reprising her role as Imperator Furiosa this "Mad Max" prequel. As of October 2022, director George Miller cast Anya Taylor-Joy to play a younger version of Theron's character. Oscar winner Theron admitted this to be a "little heartbreaking" in her first interview after the prequel was announced.
