Needless to say that I had never heard about the 2019 horror comedy "Puppet Killer", prior to sitting down to watch it here in 2024. But with it being a horror comedy, then of course I had to sit down and watch it, regardless of not knowing what I was in for here.
Writers Kevin Mosley and Lisa Ovies put together an enjoyable script and storyline. I have to say that I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the movie. I just don't understand the part of about the grown ups being in school, where they supposed to pass as college students or high school students? It just made zero sense to me.
I was only familiar with actor Richard Harmon of the entire cast ensemble in the movie. However, it should be said that they had a great cast ensemble, and the actors and actresses definitely put on good performances and brought the characters and story to life on the screen in a nice manner.
The killer puppet, Simon, is just a hilarious addition to the movie. It added a lot of flavor and comedy to the movie. And I will say that Simon more than makes it well-worth sitting down to watch "Puppet Killer".
"Puppet Killer" pays homage to the classic horror movies of the 1980s and 1990s, and does so in an enjoyable way, and with Simon thrown into the mix, what is there not to love about "Puppet Killer"?
If you enjoy horror comedies, then you definitely should take out 83 minutes of your time to sit down and watch this 2019 movie from director Lisa Ovies.
My rating of "Puppet Killer" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Where do I begin. In my time I have seen hundreds of movies, ranging from home filmed to high budget productions, however Puppet Killer (PK) was without a doubt the most horrifically executed one by a country mile. From the preposterous storyline to the god awful acting, this film stood alone in a category of shambolic I've never quite witnessed before. Saying this, I have rated it 4 stars due to the hysterics it left me and family in throughout the entirety of the film. The trigger of the belly aching laughter stemmed from Aleks Paunovic (52)'s first cameo, playing the role of Jamie (17), a high schooler. Paunovic is a 6"5 man mountain, who is greying and has hands the side of most 17 year olds faces. I can do nothing but grant him with kuddos for landing this stellar lead role and his unnerving performance left me feeling agitated and distressed . This was mainly due to the fact that Paunovic was playing a deranged 17 year old and is in reality, 52 years of age. However, there were some stand out performances in PK; in particular, Jett Klyne played the role of "Young Jamie" to absolute perfection and put Paunovics uneven display to shame. In addition, Simon played the role of a serial killer puppet, which is by no stretch of the word, an easy role to play, to a level of mastery which would have been missed from this cinematic. In all seriousness, I struggle to comprehend how this movie made it past the editing stage and onto screens, there should be severe sanctions dished out for whoever allowed that to happen. On the other hand, I seriously cannot wait for PK 2. This can only be described as a horrific masterclass from player, manager Lisa Ovies.
Well, it's a stupid little slasher flick. Pretty much on par with what one would expect. Not terrible.. but nothing you should rush to see either. It not funny in the laughter type of way.. it's MAY be funny in the "heh" type of way.. MAY cause a grin once in a while but that's it.
The cast are all supposed to be high school students...
But are all CLEARLY over 35, if not much closer to 50.. and one guy couldn't even be bothered to shave his full beard to portray a high school student. I mean, for f's sake.. at least make the guy shave if he wants the part.
Aleks Paunovic (the lead "student") is 54 years old as of this writing..... FIFTY FOUR years old.. but the audience is supposed to believe he's a high school student??? Did they pass out free hallucinogens at the screenings???
Now, okay.. so they cast who they thought was right for a part.. but then WHY have the opening settings relate to high school? There was no need for that. They could have been work colleagues.. that would have only required changing the setting for 3-4 scenes near the beginning and perhaps rewriting a few lines - nothing too difficult. And doing so would have made casting 40 year old actors make MUCH more sense -- because CLEARLY none of the cast is anywhere close to high school age.
Because of this poor casting.. after the opening sequence.. when they show the high school portion.. it just seems so ludicrous, so utterly ridiculous that it immediately sets the film in an "oh this is just f'n dumb" position it must crawl out of... it tried.. got close.. but meh.. don't think it ever did.
If this was the "best of Hexcon".. all I can say is Hexcon must really be bad.

One of the worst idiotic films ever. Don't waste your time. Horribly written and executed. So many good puppet films out there, THIS IS NOT ONE!

The trope of casting adults as highschoolers is taken to a hilarious extreme in Puppet Killer, and the graphic violence does NOT pull punches. Its fun, and absurd. And yet in that slurry of absurdity and violence, it still feels odd that a regular-aged baby and then regular-aged child grows into a 50-year old higschooler. I almost wanted to see star Paunovic in a diaper in order to make the earliest introduction of his character track with the madness to come. But overall, it's a great time, and I'm delighted to have seen it.
This was a film that I was curious about when I saw the title. I actually kind of met the director earlier in the day, Lisa Ovies, and she was really a ball of energy. I didn't necessarily know what I was getting into with this film but I was definitely intrigued for the United States premiere for it. The synopsis is while celebrating Christmas at a cabin in the woods, a group of high school students are stalked by a psychotic killer obsessed with horror icons.
We start this with a family as they've brought home their first child. They're going to start a new tradition of watching scary movies on Christmas and she also gives him a puppet that was hers, Simon (voiced by Lee Majdoub). The problem is that the wife passes away from cancer and the father, Robert (Geoff Gustafson), finds a new wife. She's stern with the young boy and wants to get rid of his horror VHS and posters. Robert tells her it is probably time to go and something happens where she is murdered.
It then shifts to today. The son is Jamie (Aleks Paunovic) and he's dating Jessie (Lisa Durupt). At school he hangs out with Curtis (Majdoub) as well as Lee (Kyle Cassie). He has a new girlfriend Brooke (Gigi Saul Guerrero). This group is going to go to the cabin that Jamie's family has. No one has been there since his stepmother disappeared. Jamie is in therapy to deal with his trauma and the therapist is concerned that horror movies have warped him.
Also joining them on the trip is Curtis' little brother, Rick (Richard Harmon). They head up to the cabin and party. Things take a turn when they find Simon the puppet in the basement. Jamie starts to think that Simon is moving around on his own and when Rick disappears, we see that this puppet might be alive. Is that the case? Or is Jamie really lost it and actually behind what is going on?
Now I wanted to go a little bit vague here with my recap as this is still making its festival rounds. I will say this is another horror comedy that knows what it is doing and is a love letter to the genre. The kills that are done in the film pay homage to Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween to just name a few. I can respect that for sure.
To be honest, this film is actually pretty hilarious as well. It is poking fun that actors and actresses are playing characters much younger than their real age as all of the leads clearly are not high school students. The dialogue and things that they do though are funny to see these adults are doing. On top of that, trying to see Jamie pretend that he found his beloved puppet and trying to convince his friends that it is behind what is happening cracked me up. It is confirmed about halfway through who is actually doing the killings and it is quite outrageous, but has a good back-story of why it is happening.
Ovies was in attendance as I said and she really does another good job at paying homage to the Vancouver area where she is from. She casted another horror director whose a woman in Guerrero as one of her actresses and there's a duo of directors that also have a cameo. She pointed out doing this since there are claims that women horror directors are in competition and she wants to dispel that. I thought that was quite interesting for sure.
That will take me to the pacing of this film. I don't know the exact running time, but its around 90 minutes or less which is perfect. It does a good job at establishing the history and then introducing the characters. Being that the main character is into horror makes me smile and it doesn't take long for the kills to start. The homage to horror films before it is great and I even like the ending, even if we get the horror troupe to leave it open for a sequel.
I'll shift next to the acting, which being that this is a comedy is a bit over the top. I think that it works though as it doesn't try to be something that it's not. It makes it even funnier to see these characters who are clearly older playing high school students. Paunovic was solid as the lead, especially trying to convince us what he thinks is happening. I have to give props to Majdoub for his hilarious character and doing the voice of Simon, he's probably the real MVP here. Durupt and Guerrero are both attractive and talented. Cassie, Harmon and Gustafson round it out for what was needed as well. I won't reveal who the cameo here is, but they're definitely two people I adore and I love the reference to their work.
That takes me to the effects, which are actually kind of tough. They do great at bringing Simon to life in a way that we think he could be alive or that it is possible that he is being controlled. Regardless it doesn't look easy. They definitely seemed to go practical from what I could tell which is impressive. If there was any CGI, I couldn't tell and that's good use of it if that's the case. Going back to the puppet, this is shot very well if you can hide that someone needs to control it and I didn't see that person once along with the rest of it for sure.
Now with that said, this film is a lot of fun and another one that you just have to come in to enjoy. The reveal of who the killer is outrageous and hilarious. I love the horror references that are throughout this one as well. There's actually some really good writing that is paired with it for sure. It is paced in a way where I never got bored, but I will admit, it doesn't really build as much tension as I would like due to the comedy aspects. The ending worked for me though. I thought the acting was over the top and par for the course, the effects are impressive in that they can make the puppet move without us seeing and the practical effects on top of that. The soundtrack really didn't stand out to me, but it also didn't hurt it either. I would definitely say this is a fun film, especially for horror fans. Overall I'd say this is above average in my opinion.

Horror fans will love the nods to various horror sub genres and movies. Yes, it's silly but entertaining none the less. One of the best horror cameos awaits you.

Made an account just for this.
Caught this at hexcon in Calgary and it blew my mind. They played a bunch of awesome films but obviously this one stood out! It's not just that the killer is a puppet, but this movie has so many callbacks to classic horror and kinda makes fun of normal horror tropes, but it's played so seriously that it works so well!
All the kills are practical effects, which i love, and some of the dialogue is just perfect. They have probably my favourite example of a "meta" character with the Curtis character, who is flat out the guy that basically goes "don't go in to the basement or you'll die"
Sounds like this was super low budget, but it looks better than most of the crap on netflix and such. So funny, and the filmmakers are so nice. It's a really indie film and i hope it heys released soon!
Also, Paunovic rules! It has Julius from van helsing!!!!

I saw this film at Nightmares Film Festival and it blew me away. Did not expect this! I haven't laughed so hard in a horror comedy like this before. The writing, casting, DIRECTING, scoring, EVERYTHING flowed together so well. Can't wait to see more from this crew! I'm now a Puppet Killer fan for LIFE.

The worst thing about this movie is that if you watch it once, you'll keep wanting to rewatch it....over and over.....to catch all the hidden Easter eggs that pay homage to 80's horror. It's that good. Witty writing, great directing, and all around top notch performance from cast. Well done!! 👍👍
Watching the premiere of this film was a pleasure. Arguably biased, as there were excellent references to all of my favorite 70-80s horror films. So if you're a fan of this genre and time period, practical effects, independent features, and you enjoy laughing - you'll love it.

Puppet Killer is a brilliant and original film that is well worth the watch. It knows what it is and Embraces it in all of it's glory, paying tribute to the Horror greats that came before. I have no doubt that this film will become a cult classic in no time. Everyone in the attributed credits did such an incredible job, and I cannot wait to watch it again.

I recently saw this at Romford Film Festival and have to say it is an absolute masterpiece!
Great sharp witt floods throughout, the leading actor a man clearly in his late 40s or 50s is thrown in to show homage to the the trope of putting an older actor into a teenage role. Loved the sharp homages to other films, the killer as Jason for example, hot tub deaths. And of course, those unaccredited cameos.
Magnificent movie!
