One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.
7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)
While there are moments of Viral that stand out to this day, the overall style and stories rarely live up to the premise. Outside of this franchise, some segments would feel like a great little horror entry, but when the footage does not make sense as something that might come from a VHS,...

Musical episodes of TV shows weren’t invented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, nor by Xena: Warrior Princess either. But it was Xena that came up with a way of doing musical episodes that was incredibly effective, and Buffy that perfected it, producing a musical that has been a touchstone for TV ever since.
Some TV shows are designed to be a musical every week, of course, from Glee to Schmigadoon! to Flight of the Conchords. But there is also a fairly long-standing tradition of non-musical shows including musical episodes from time to time.
It might seem like having characters who do not normally sing randomly burst into song would be restricted to science fiction and fantasy, in which an invented reason can be provided for the singing, but plenty of non-sci fi and fantasy shows have done musicals either by making the whole thing take place inside someone’s...

What can this one do for me that I haven’t already seen?” Well for one, it was a huge cult classic and so successful that it has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs! Fan of hunting for “Black Mirror” Easter Eggs? Well, the series has a treat for you — Season 6 debuts with the series’ most meta episode yet. The first episode of the long-awaited sixth season, “Joan Is Awful” follows Joan; a woman who finds that her life is being turned into a prestige streaming series starring Salma Hayek, a discovery that sends her jobs and relationships into freefall after all of her secrets suddenly become public knowledge.
Annie Murphy plays Joan. Salma Hayek also plays Joan… and Salma Hayek. Rob Delaney plays Mac. Ben Barnes also plays Mac. Which is to say, there’s a lot to unpack and a heck of a cast to keep track of while you’re at it. There’s even a fake streaming service full of “Black Mirror” references and callbacks.
We’ve got you covered with a handy guide to who plays whom.

The Disney Channel has introduced us to some of the finest Hollywood stars, and one notable alumnus is Ashley Tisdale. The now 33-year-old starred in Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody alongside world-famous pop artist, actor and producer, Selena Gomez, the Sprouse twins among other actors. And while some stars may shine brighter than others, Tisdale has certainly not vanished from the limelight. So what exactly has Ashley Tisdale been up to since leaving Disney?
Ashley Tisdale had one of the most successful Disney Channel careers
Ashley Tisdale started her acting career as a voice actor and gradually grew into a face that was hard to miss in Disney Channel productions in the 2000s. Her onscreen debut came in 1997 with minor roles in the shows Smart Guy and 7th Heaven. She continued voice acting and wound up landing a major role in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody as Maddie Fitzpatrick.

If you've listened to Corpse Club or read Daily Dead over the years, you may know that I'm not shy about sharing my eternal love for the 2008 zombified horror comedy Dance of the Dead, directed by Gregg Bishop from a screenplay by Joe Ballarini (I even had the undying pleasure of helping put together 10th anniversary screenings for the film). It's with immense pleasure and plenty of anticipation that we share the news that Bloody Disgusting and Fangoria are teaming up for Bishop's next movie, The Sisters of Samhain, which features a "rogue coven" running amok on Halloween night.
Announced by Bloody Disgusting and Deadline, The Sisters of Samhain will be directed by Bishop from a screenplay by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (the writing duo behind Super Dark Times and the recent Sundance hit The Night House). According to Bloody Disgusting, the film "follows a group of friends who...

Pharrell Williams, Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson and more discuss one of music’s most important landmarks in the new trailer for The Apollo, the HBO-bound documentary about the legendary Harlem theater.
“When [the Beatles] first came to New York, the Apollo was the first place we wanted to go,” McCartney says in the trailer. “This music just connected.”
Williams adds, “I don’t know where any of us would be without all those performances on that stage. The Apollo is the beginning of all of it.”

Some landmarks symbolize the culture behind their existence; others have a hand in creating the culture itself. In Roger Ross Williams’ sincere documentary tribute “The Apollo,” Harlem’s iconic theater receives a generous overview of its role as a cultural hub for black entertainment and culture for close to 90 years. It’s a worthy salute to the theater’s role in sustaining African American performance art through periods of great turmoil, and provides a conduit for exploring how a beacon for black achievement functions from the inside out.
Having said that, “The Apollo” doesn’t work overtime to ask the most probing questions. It’s hard not to watch the movie without considering the issues it glosses over that might have given this absorbing chronicle more of an investigative flair. The non-fiction medium has a reigning king in this department: Documentary maestro Frederick Wiseman, whose cinematic deep-dives include the New York Library portrait “Ex Libris,...

You should never take for granted a documentary that fills in the basics with flair and feeling. Especially when the basics consist of great big gobs of some of the most revolutionary and exhilarating popular art ever created in this country. Roger Ross Williams’ documentary “The Apollo,” which kicked off the Tribeca Film Festival on a note of soulful celebration, fills in the 85-year history of the 1,506-seat show palace on 125th St. in Harlem that changed black culture and changed American culture. The movie brings off that feat in a bracing and moving way: by flowing back and forth between past and present, performance and political activism, so that by the end we know in our bones how false it would be separate them.
Countless astonishing spectacles of black expression were experienced, for the first time, on the Apollo stage. But in “The Apollo,” an event that stands out...

David Bruckner’s The Ritual is a harrowing blend of fierce and folksy horror, but also comes with a tingle of Fomo. How, you ask? Track back to 2007, when Bruckner teamed with Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry to dial-in their shared narrative The Signal (three directors, three “transmissions”). Between then and The Ritual we’ve seen two Bruckner visions in the form of (fan favorite) anthology segments – “Amateur Night” (V/H/S) and “The Accident” (Southbound) – yet no solo project. Quite simply, The Ritual is too tight and polished for a “feature-length debut,” but that’s what it *technically* is. Genre fans, we’ve been robbed of boatloads more Bruckner these past years (case and point: where the Hell is Brucker’s Friday The 13th).

At 84, Sir Michael Caine finally gets the chance to play with Barbies onscreen. He’ll next star as General Anton Vincent — akin to a kindly, English-accented Fidel Castro — who seeks refuge with his teenage American pen pal (Israeli “Lady Bird” actress Odeya Rush) once he’s ousted from his British-Caribbean island. While hiding out in young Tatiana Miles’ closets and garage, the despot enlists her dolls to strategize a takedown of her suburban high school’s clique, The Slushies.
Katie Holmes plays Tatiana’s mom, a doctor’s office employee whose storyline involves getting her toes sucked by her boss (Seth Green). Also part of the comedy’s ensemble is Jason Biggs, cast as the teacher who fails to dissuade Tatiana from beginning her correspondence with Vincent. Set for distribution from Cinedigm, “Dear Dictator” is the latest collaboration of married writer-directors Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse (2016’s “Amateur Night,” a...

“We made the show, but you fans made it worthwhile.” Last night, Wgn America’s Salem came to an end after three seasons, and to thank the diehard fans of the show, series creators Adam Simon and Brannon Braga share their heartfelt thoughts in a new video made especially for the Heathens.
“The third season of “Salem” dawns with the triumph of the witches’ plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital. But the devil is a liar, and instead of a New World free from murderous Puritan hypocrisy, his own plan will bring nothing but death and slavery with the ultimate aim of leading humanity to destroy itself. And there’s only one person on earth who can beat the devil — the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley. The only problem is—she’s dead. Or is she?...

Humorously providing a relatable view on an alternative lifestyle that’s often quickly judged by society is a challenge that not many filmmakers, particularly those who are making their feature film writing and directorial debuts, willing embrace. But up-and-coming married scribes-helmers, Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse, intriguingly relied on their unique working experiences as they strived to achieve their Hollywood dreams, with their new comedy, ‘Amateur Night.’ The filmmakers cast spouses Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen to bring their distinctive story to life in ‘Amateur Night.’ The comedy highlights the role reversal of women portraying characters who willingly work illegal and sordid jobs, and don’t experience the residual guilt that accompanies [ Read More ]

Relentlessly maintaining a brazen and confident personality is a key component for women to achieve and preserve a successful business. Embodying that assertive approach is a key element in forming compelling female characters in films. That endearing characteristic is compellingly personified in the lead female characters in the new comedy, ‘Amateur Night,’ which was written and directed by Lisa Addario and her husband, Joe Syracuse. The movie is based on Syracuse’s experiences when he and Addario first moved to Los Angeles to pursue careers in filmmaking. ‘Amateur Night,’ which Cinedigm distributed in New York and Los Angeles theaters this weekend, showcases how a man who’s desperate for a job unknowingly [ Read More ]

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes and clips and puts it all in perspective. Let me ask you this, if I could guarantee you that you could watch a special cut of Rogue One this weekend, if, and only if, you watched Amateur Night five times, would you do it? I wouldn't. I really wouldn't. And I'm looking forward to Rogue One more than anyone. By the way, don't go watching this movie five times, it's not a real offer. And more to the point, I don't think this Jason Biggs movie looks very good. It's really hard to put together a movie. Even a movie that's crying out for "amateur hour" puns. Trust me on this. Getting anything off the ground that doesn't come with a built-in audience, like a sequel, reboot, or adaptation, it's takes a lot of dedication. But even in this form,...

Remember Jim Levenstein? He was that awkward, sexually precocious teenager determined to lose his virginity before prom night? The one whose sexual exploits were accidentally projected through a then cutting-edge webcam? The kid who put his thing in his mother’s apple pie and couldn’t talk to a girl to save his life until a dominating vixen came along? Well, it’s the 1990s all over again as Jason Briggs, who made Jim famous in that surprise comedy hit American Pie, returns to the big screen with Amateur Night. Which may as well be called “American Pie, The Remake”—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
In Amateur Night Briggs is Guy Carter, a still nerdy and sexually awkward but now thirty-something year old. Guy is fearful of another important milestone in anyone’s life—parenthood (he did have a wedding in one of the Pie sequels, after...
